Mjolnir Battle Tactics, for example, spammed the Wikipedia page for Bungie.net with group advertisements, Popular Fusion and they have this inane "Group War" going on, and people actually have "Do not send me group invites" in their signatures.
They've missed the point. Terribly.
Excuse me GameJunkieJim I personally included a small description of Mjolnir Battle Tactics on bungie wikipedia page because it is free to edit by anyone and MBT does wether you like it or not play a role in all of bungie because of our size and influence. I did not post "JOIN MBT WE'RE AWSOME" ads all over the page but instead just a small well written description.
Wikipedia is not to be used in that way. Start a page called Mjolnir Battle Tactics for that if you wish, but that page is about Bungie.net, not the Seventh Column, and not about individual groups.
As for Popular Fusion, they had a small skirmish awhile ago but that was ages ago and you bring it up because you want to attack large groups because you see them as the problem. Maybe the problem isn't us but maybe its just you. You say we've missed the point of the 7th Column which as far as I have taken it to be is that its about uniting Halo 2 gamers under a common flag. You've gotten close, but it's not about Halo 2, it's about all of Bungie, which goes back 15 years.
I think MBT and Popular Fusion have done this both to the best of there abilities and are the most successfully groups at accomplishing the 7th columns purpose. MBT and PF provide great content and activity to there groups and you call this a annoyance because we aren't one of thoughs exclusive chapters you have where only a few of your buddies can hang out and have one new post a day. No, I do not disagree with that statement, but in practice you haven't been doing that. You meaning the group as a whole, not you personally. If you want to talk about groups being annoying why don't you look at HFCS; more topics have been made about this group in the septagon then any other group. They aren't considered advertisement because nobody can join but they've continued to be posted and not locked because the moderators think its funny. You're absolutely right, and I'm ashamed that I contributed my share of it, I was trying to share a laugh with the rest of the forum.
If you really want to know the state of the 7th Colum then here it is from a lowly members point of view:
* The Classifieds has become a wasteland where you can make one advertisement and nobody can reply. The only people that actaully visit the Classifieds are the moderators when they lock a thread that got 2 replies and ban all the people in the thread. I agree with this, the classifieds need to be more community oriented and not a simple "Phone Book" type forum.
* We have 15 moderators on 12 forums now but wait...why do we still have a huge off-topic/spam problem...maybe because they only post in the forums they are acustom to like the septagon and the underground. Thoughs forums are so well maintained because there is always at least 2 moderators browsing them. The reason for that is because all the moderators on this site are considered and where choosen because of there "old-school" style. You can deny this all you like but every single moderator has this same attribute in common. I will deny this, and the reason for it? We are outnumbered. Horribly. The backlash that would occur if we got bareknuckled and banned for every infraction would be terrible. We also have the problem of people assuming we know more than we do, and can rarely make topics addressing our own opinions because we in some small way represent Bungie. If I want to speculate about the Halo 3 story, for example, everyone would flip out because "He's a mod! He must know something!!!"
* You say that large groups like MBT and Popular Fusion are problem groups but its smaller, quieter groups that hide spammers, and conquors. Once great groups like Elite Spartan Army and 7th Column Assembly have been spammed with pages of spam posts by people who hide out in small groups and cause problems to larger groups. Specifically people like Count Confusion, Sonny Foreilli and a few others have become a large problem in the groups because they spam every time they think a moderator is not online. Of course you woudn't know anything about any of these problems because you and most of the regular septagon people only hang out here and in small exclusive clubs unware of any of these problems besides the large groups that you insult. I don't mean to insult you in that sense. Large Groups are not a problem in and of themselves. Chapter Founders and The Marty Army are great examples. They behave, they are community minded, and they don't spam peoples inboxes and other groups with advertisements.
* The Halo 3 forum is a un-moderated mess. Want a more detailed description: Even the on-topic posts that don't deserve to be locked are filled with spam that has nothing to do with what the orginal poster said. This is true for at least 1 in every 3 posts. It's moderated, but again we run into the problem of moderator to user ratio, and backlash. I moderated that forum heavily for the first two weeks it was around. The stress caused me to get an ulcer and my gall bladder failed. You think this is an easy job? I tell you truthfully, it is not.
* Large parts of the site have been completely abandoned despite the addition of new employee's in bungie. The 7th Column Council was the idea to remedy this situation but it has been completely shot down because bungie does not trust anyone to manage there site that they wouldn't trust with moderator powers. Agreed, totally and without reservation. That's a good part of why my post is here in the first place.
* More recently even look at the underground I see at least 6 locked topics on the first page. This further proves 2 other of my points. Moderators visit only a few select forums they are acustom too and there is more off-topic spam then ever. Again, some of the times it's easier to let a topic die out on it's own than for us to get involved, some people retaliate to our blacklistings by creating 50 more accounts and spamming way worse than before, so a solution is not readily apparent.
* The solution to the main forum problem is a simple one but one bungie would never be willing to do. Until they select people that are regular flood or Halo 3 forum members to moderate these area's of the site that they regularly visit anyways they are always going to be uncontrolled and spam infested forums. It's not a solution, only a postponement. We are actually in those forums. We are simply not as visible as we try to be.
* The solution to the groups problem is equally simple and alot easier to accomplish. Stop criticizing other groups and focus on making your own group the best it can possibly be. This does not been stop all inter-group interaction because that is a integral part of what the 7th Column is, but instead of focusing on a groups negative points why don't you try and find what is good and unique about that group. Unique aspects of the group is essential for a healthy existence. One does not want the interation to stop. I simply want it to be a constructive interaction rather than destructive.
One last thing, I try my hardest to make MBT the greatest group it could possibly be, I do everything for that group. I create cash prizes, make websites all with my own time and money and I don't like it when people like you come along with there elitist attitudes and put down all my work in one short summary of everything we've done wrong.Hey, I respect that. However, your group is judged on the actions of it's members, not just the founder. Do well to remember that.
