Well, you need another PC if you wnat to play Halo and run a dedicated server. You can't play and have a dedi on the same PC. It kind of contradicts the word DEDICATED.

It is highly ill advised to try to run a dedicated server AND the client on the same PC, however it you insist in attempting that insanity then review this article. Although it is written for the Halo CE dedicated server it holds true for the Halo PC dedicated server.

I started a dedicated server and can't connect to it

read the stickies.

in order to have a great DS, you have to forward your ports on one pc.

then, you join from another pc, and you should be able to join.

the reason why you can't see it is that it's not forwarded ports.

about 3 seconds into it i lose the network connection :P

but thanks, i wont have to use the darned user-hosted servers anymore!

No, it doesnt work on halo, but works on UT2004. Your better off just running the trial if you wanna play with your friends. Thats what I do.

Port forwarding is different with every router. This is the general step by step:
1 - Go to your routers settings (normally in interent explorer) with an IP (ex: 192.168.0.1)
2 - Go into advanced options / administration
3 - Look for Port Forwarding
4 - Put in the local IP of your server and the ports (Halo: UDP ports 2302 + 2303)
5 - Click save and restart

Need your IP?

Click the little icon in your system tray - Its the one with two computers and flashing blue lights on each one - Go to the support tab.

Theres everything you need to know.

Alright try this.

Start > Run
Type "cmd" and press enter
Type "ipconfig"
Look right by the IP Address. Follow it across. It should have a number. Thats your IP.

A static IP is simply a user-specified IP address.

Static IP means you specified your IP rather than having the DHCP server (your router) assign it. If you didnt put in a static IP, then you shouldnt need to worry about it. To open ports, all you need is your IP of the computer your running the server on and the ports and protocol you need to open it with. For Halo this is UDP ports 2302 and 2303. The "range" of the ports (if it asks you for that) is UDP 2302-2303.

If you cant access the router's adminstrator settings, look in your user manual or consult the router manufacturer's website.

are you telling me that all i have to do is go into the firewall and open ports 2302, 2303? cuz i did that doesnt work after just that

Its not just your firewall.

You need to forward ports on your router. If you dont, it wont work. Thats what Ive been telling you to do the whole time. You need to find out how to forward ports via your router manufacturer's website or the manual.

Exactly. Find the brand of your router and its manual, and read it. It will tell you how to do it there
