Subject: What happens when a thread is moved twice?

Let's say I make a thread in Forum A. It is moved to Forum B. In forum A, it appears locked and provides a link to it. But what happens when it is moved again from Forum B to Forum C? Do Forums A and B still have links? Does the one in A link to the one in B which links to the one in C? Or does it change to link directly to the moved thread in C?

Now, let's undo that. We're back where the thread has been moved to B. What happens if it's moved back to A? Will it take the form of it's original thread? Or will there be the moved thread, and the original with link to B? Will there be the moved thread and the original linked directly to the moved thread?

Sorry if this is confusing. Hard to explain....

bah

Let's find out, shall we?

  • 08.02.2006 8:36 PM PDT

umm...the same thing when a thread is moved once, except its more work for the mods to delete two threads instead of one.

I've been around these parts for almost eight years now...wow! Maybe I should be concerned about that...

That would never happen, since only mods can move threads and they always move it to the right forum (unless you're yoozel and you're really drunk)...but I would guess the link in forum A would redirect you to the thread in forum B which would again redirect you to forum C.

And if moved from forum A to forum B and back to forum A, then it would appear as if the post had never moved.

We should ask a mod to test this just to humor us.

Even if he says no, whats the harm in asking?

It is possibel that the harm in asking is a possible 7 day Blacklisting.

I don't know. But I have never seen the mods make that kinda mistake ever. I doubt it's ever happened and if it did then all that happened was that there were two moved posts in two threads not that big of a deal if you ask me.

On the other hand, I think one of the possibilities would be the Universe collapsing upon itself.

That was a joke.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -

This has already happened. Recently, too. The 7th column Tournament thread was moved from the Septagon to the Classifieds. Then it was moved back to the Septagon. The original thread in the Septagon was still locked, with a link that led to the Classifieds thread. From there, you followed a link to the new thread that was created back in the Septagon.

And on the post about the double move for a topic, was the topic eventually fixed, or was it overlooked?

I think that was refering to what I said, right? Well, all you had to do was click on the new thread in the Septagon. You didn't actually have to follow all the links to get there. I only did it because I was curious.

I think the real question is "What happens when a thread gets moved three times!

  • 08.03.2006 2:26 AM PDT

  • user homepage:

When you create a thread, it gets an ID number. When a thread is moved, the "click here to view original post" link, will redirect you to this ID number. So it doesn't matter how many times you move it, all the links will simply redirect you to the ID number.

Two days ago, I actually had to move something twice (you didn't read that), but...... We have more powers available than one could imagine. Nobody even noticed the second movement.

So all you need to know is: it works.

That's actually incorrect. The a new postID gets generated every time the thread gets moved. The original thread (that is now locked) will always have the same postID and it will have a link to the new postID. If that thread gets moved, the now locked thread will have the same postID it did when it was generated from the first move and it will create another postID and have a link to that postID in the thread. So, now there are 3 postIDs for one thread. A "smart" moderator (in other words, a moderator that doesn't want his mistake to be seen) will change the link in the first locked thread to the third postID, totally bypassing the second postID.

The best example is this thread. As you notice, each succesive thread has a higher postID, but I'd be able to change the link in the first thread to direct people to the third thread (but that wouldn't apply to this one, since it ends up back in the same forum and the other 2 should just be deleted).

Ah, I stand corrected then. Yet another thing learned.
And if I was smart, I wouldn't be a moderator!

The tricky situation where two moderators move a thread at the same time has happened to me a few times; The mod that moves it second will be moving the "Moved:" notice, thus creating another "Moved:" notice.

Thus creating a "Moved:Moved:" notice. Easily fixed, but looks a bit silly if you don't clean it up quickly.

Never had that before. I find it far more irritating when two moderators lock something or ban someone at the same time.
