Don't drink to excess– You might shoot at tax-collectors... and miss

When we have the MAW gatherings, some people, (not the regulars, but maybe people who heard about the gatherings here), seem confused about how Assault CTF works. It's like football. The flag is the ball. You take it to the enemy base to score– like a Touch Down.

Even after they figure that out, they still need some tactical help. Here's my suggestions:

CTF ASSAULT TACTICS

Defense-
Many people just pull back to base when defending– they camp a rocket hog on the flag holder and wait for the attack. That's weak. And stupid.

Your enemy only has to touch the flag holder with the flag. He can have one bar of health when he does it and he still scores, even if he dies a split second later. In fact, if there's time left on the clock, he wants to die so he can pick up another flag back at his base.

I like to go out a ways from base, preferably in a hog with a gunner and driver, (sitting hogs are sitting ducks), but if you can't get a team mate to leave base, take a hog, (pref rocket hog), and camp it where you can ambush the flag carrier.

Even if you don't stop him, you'll weaken him, making it easier for your team to finish the job. Also, if you get killed at mid-field, you can respawn at your base before the enemy gets there– you get anothe chance to stop him. If you camp the base and get killed, you'll respawn after the enemy scores.

After you deliver your last flag and the enemy goes on offense, your defense starts at his base. Keep him from leaving with the flag for as long as you can. When you die, you may see which way they're going with the flag– useful intel. When you respawn at your base, other team mates should be at mid-field. They're the first line of defense, you're the second.

Offense-
As I said above hog-camping the base is weak and stupid– be thankful when your enemy hog-camps. One 'nade tossed under the hog and a few pistol pops takes the hog crew out. RL or FRG can do the same.

Usual method is to convoy hogs– RL hog leads with CG hog behind. RL hog blasts through defense and CG hog mops up. Flag usually in CG hog. Of course, if you always do it that way it gets predictable. It pays to mix it up sometimes. I like it when there are ghosts. Going on foot with the flag can work, especially if you have a hog convoy to distract the enemy.

Feel free to add to this.

I've had parts of an FAQ knocking around my PC: I've not finished it yet, but I'll post the bit I had on assaults.

General tips

The important thing to remember about playing different Halo subtypes is that there quite a few objectives in the game. However, for almost all of these you can apply these simple rules.

1: The aim of the gametype is to *complete objective*
2: Secondary aim is to ensure the enemy *do not complete objective*

If you're playing to win, then everything else is secondary to these two rules. Don't bother doing other stuff, like racking up kills in a CTF or Oddball match.

CTF Tips

Since there is no FFA CTF (! That would be weird) this is about Teamwork.

Remember, the aim here is NOT to kill the enemy, it's to get the flag to the base.

I have found the two best strategies for capturing the flag are either 1: full on assault, or 2: stealth assault.
Effectively, 1 requires a large number of people to go in at the same time, and the best assaults have both vehicular AND footsoldiers going in together (eg in death canyon attacking with a rod in the tunnel and a couple of hogs coming from the canyon). Kill everyone there, grab the flag, and escort it back while suppressing (heh) the enemy at the base so they can't catch up. Remember, if someone drops the flag, pick it up!
The stealth assault is also quite fun. For a stealth assault to work, it requires most of the enemy to be away from the base. Send in a single/couple of people on vehicles/foot, and leg it! Remember, you do NOT always need to go out by the same way you came in on. Many people will assume you'll go back for your hog. Go out the teleporters and leave them waiting! Or charge in on foot, grab the flag and jump onto an opponent's ghost or banshee!
One more point on the flag: It is an excellent melee weapon, and incredibly funny to use. Many times have I run round the corner holding the flag, waited a second, then given the unfortunate enemy a mouthful of pole!
Don't be afraid to drop the flag if you need to. Hell, throw the flag while jumping and reload you rockets while you're at it. And if you're still near the enemy base you can retreat inside and when the enemy returns the flag you can grab it again and sneak out the back (or wherever!)

--

On Assault gametypes, when guarding, it is advisable to leave a hog on the flag-point and get someone in the turret. Rocket hogs are best for this. Or tanks.

Try not to return the enemy flag to their base if not necessary; that will just give them an extra chance to score again, instead waste their offensive time guarding it. Exception! If it is TOO near your flag point, return it just in case.

When attacking, the more enemies you kill on the way to the enemy base, the more enemies will be there respawned to repay the favour.

If you die when attacking, and the flag's gone miles away, stand on your flag-point and if the flag returns, you can have another chance to score immediately. You can drop the flag indefinitely when you have still have time for assault, but when the time is up when you drop the flag (or are killed) you switch to defense. Teamwork is essential, and remember, drivers usually die last in hogs, so always drive if you have the flag. Go in on a vehicle and cap that last flag!

I've also got a lot of stuff on race, slayer, KOTH, oddball and more on CTF. Still working on the weapons bit and maps.

I personally disagree that hog-camping the flag point is a weak tactic. With a rocket hog there it provides a last line of defense especially if you can't get heavy weapons to the base - it's a last screen if everything else fails - and an effective one at that.

Of course ONLY hog-camping the spawn point is a bad tactic, but if all else fails it's a one shot kill to stop that last incoming hog. Usually I play Assault on Danger Canyon, and have a great time sniping people out of vehicles. Getting Hvy weps back to base is also a good tactic.

It's not *that* hard to organise a convoy, just grab the flag, grab a hog, and refuse to go until another hog spawns. Warning: this may get you TK'd.

I love when people mistake assult for normal CTF, and go the enemy base to find a flag-stand..with no flag. One time this one dude thought the other team was hacking and change the location of the flag stand to somewhere hidden so everytime he went for it it wasn't there, that made me laugh. Silly them for not pressing F1 and finding out.

Assault is the best, it's one of my most favorite gametypes. Good example of flag tricks for Timberland Assault here.

That was so funny, it was like watching a Futbol game.( no, not American "Football", "Futbol").

Last line of defense is one thing, but too often it's the only line of defense– someone camps a hog on the flag and everyone else stands around and says "what's "defense mean?". I'd rather see the hog just outside the base with a driver moving it around a bit so it's not a sitting duck for a FRG, rocket or 'nade.
I'd rather put someone on foot with a RL or FRG on the flag as a last line of defense.

Half the strength of a hog is that it's mobile– camp it and you lose that strength.

The other half of the warthog's strength is that it's a solid object and hard to move through: many a time I've lost my wingmen in a flag cap and couldn't score cause a hog was over the flag point, I couldn't drop it cause it was :00 seconds left, and then people respawned and killed me. You can't do THAT with dead bodies =D
