i had a cheap old 30 gig hard disk, i jus recently replaced it with a 500 gig drive, i didnt put it in as a slave drive cause the old 1 had loads of viruses on it, so i just replaced it, i also installed a 500W power supply, my old 1 was only 420W, and i got a new hard disk cooling system, i reformatted the disk and everything without a hitch, all the drivers went in fine, then i loaded halo, it installed fine, when i played it, the graphics were amazingly better, like 4 times better than before, but i get lag now on the maps that require more graphics, like the coventant ones and such, i never had this problem before, it was great graphics and everything ran smoothly before, the thing is, its the same exact graphics card, and all its drivers r installed, i have the halo graphics set to max like always, and i havent changed any settings that i kno of that i didnt change before on the card, i tried reinstalling halo, and the graphics card drivers, and i even reformatted a second time, same thing happened, i get a 10 to 25 dropp in frame rate, i think somehow since the graphics look alot better that the settings r set higher, so that it has a slower frame rate, can anyone help me?

my card is an ATI Radeon, AGP, X1300 with 512MB

Just turn your settings down, for some reason, I have the same problem with my old desktop, Sims 2 played fine, got a new hard drive, now it doesn't work well. 3 FPS.

It's not "lag", it's simply a drop in your framerate.

If this is a problem, lower your resolution and your settings until you reach an appropriate balance between performance and graphics until you are satisfied.

You mean you can't run 640 X 480 at the lowest settings possible without a playable framerate?

Dang. With your system specs you should be able to run 1280 X 1024 with medium to max settings with no problem.

However, you've forgotten to mention your CPU. Maybe that could be the problem, hmm??

Try turning off specular and shadows. Those should work. On maps like Damnation I turn specular off because my beautiful computer cries out in the unbearable pain of trying to get me a beautiful image at a consistent smooth framerate.

I found a 750GB hard drive by seacoast or something, $350.

I don't know how to help, I was thinking the same thing as kim, have a balance.

I'm too lazy to read, but first check if your previous hard drive had a faster rpm, if it didn't or the two drives were the same try keeping your computer cool (its summer) and if all else fails back up your pr0n and format.

the old hard disk was bout 1/4 as fast as this 1, and this thing is a freaking wind tunnel, it has 10 total fans, 1 for CPU, 5 built into the case, and 2 for the power supply, and 2 for the hard disk cooling system, i think thats more than enough.

i kno exactly wats in this thing cause i built it myself.

This is quite confusing. You've got a high-end PC, so everything should be working perfectly.

Did you download the latest drivers for your GPU?

Well, thats a really low end card. I've got an x800pro, I flashed its bios and overclocked it when I bought it like 9 months ago. On highest settings and 1280x1024 I get like 100fps generally sometimes more and sometimes less. Anyway, I think the overclocking is starting to have a negative affect now as sometimes when I play I get around 30 fps, and it doesnt change. The cause of that is the card being to hot and it is underclocking itself. The x1300 lacks a fan if I remember correctly, thus if something bad happens to the cooling plate, such as if it got knocked out of place when you put your harddrive in, you could have some serious heating issues for your gpu. Also, having a billion fans sometimes doesn't help, heat can find a spot to hide. If theres a weird flow in your case heat could be sitting on your gpu causing it to run slower. When you're playing halo and lagging, open your case and feel the temp in your case and around the gpu. You might find a hotspot, if you do, rearrange the fans in you case to optimize airflow.

I'll post something else if I think of something.

low end, ur joking me, yea right, its overkill for ever game ive ever had, the ppl i bought it from said it was overkill for everything i would ever use it for, and it was $500, and ur wrong, it has a fan. also my new hard disk cooling system has temparature for both the hard disk and the internal temp of the case, i put the wire that measures the temp kinda near the GPU and it reads at 70 to 80 degrees. also i ust to get above 60 FPS. now with these problems its alot lower, but if it got that high FPS at highest graphics setting, its definatly not a low end card, expectialy if it was $500, i spent alot on it now ur saying its a piece of crap.

i dont like being criticized
