A core of what? Core of fabulous content? How can you have content when you don't have features? The Seventh Column is weak right now because all the group communties look the same and provide the same sort of content. Why? Because we only have a couple useful features and maybe two or three usable themes. Features, ranks and gimmicks all help make groups different and worth visiting.

You say that as though the ratio of "failed" groups to "successful" wasn't 10,000:1 in the old column as well.

Giving groups calanders and polls will not magically make successful groups. The groups that are successful would have been successful back then, as well. Take off the rose colored glasses for a sec, stoshy, 'n hear me out.

Everybody has the same features that everyone else has. Just like in the old column, there's nothing one group can do, site-wise, that another group cannot. This has not changed. Polls and calanders are not what makes a group unique.

What makes a group work is the people in it. When I say a "core," I mean a core group of people with similar interests, and a solid base for discussion.

Features do not create this. A calander system doesn't improve the quality of life in a group that discusses Halo story theories. Usage stats do not make the quality of discussion in a group better.

Too many people approach making a group as one might approach building a theme park. They pick from a hundred different successful (or less than successful) ideas that they see in other forums, start a group with a bunch of these features listed, and then wonder why their "Say x in reply to the thread above you," or why people aren't role playing as grunts, or why their forum game only lasted for three posts.

Nevermind the fact that they've only got three or five people in their group, and those people only joined because they join every group they see.

The founders get so caught up in creating features and amusements for people (or whining about not being able to create particular features and amusements for people), that they all too often forget the most important part of a group: The people! The majority of people are so busy thinking about how the group they founded is going to be so successful because of all these elements they've taken from other groups that they don't stop to realize that that in order for the group to be successful, they need a group first.

Promises of features that every other group has only brings in momentary attention. "Yay, I joined this group, now I've got a ranking that's higher than my ranking in five other groups, but lower than my ranking in ten other groups." If there's nothing to do in a group but sit and say the same things you say in a hundred other groups, you're going to lose interest and forget about that group. More features won't change this; it just means there's more monotony amongst the groups.

Read about the Forgotten Spartan I Program
Butane: To protect the world from devastation!
sir_brilliant: To unite all people within our nation!
Rainman89: To denounce the evils of truth and love!
sir_brilliant: To extend out reach to the stars above!
SpaceGhostFlyer: Jessie!
Butane: James!
sir_brilliant: Team Rocket blasting off at the speed of light
Butane: Surrender now or prepare to fight
sir_brilliant: Meowth, that's right!

Sorry stosh, but I have to agree with Shiskabob.

Groups with fancy gimicks aren't as good as groups with good people.

And a purpose isn't it, either. I am in two fanfiction groups.
1.OFG-300+ members
2.Fanfic Hday-6 members.

OFG has a purpose, a clan, fancy games, reviews. And the otehr has no purpose other than to keep us togethor. ANd you know what?
I prefer the 6-member one
.
Why? We are just as active, it is closed membership(we aren't accepting anyone right now), and there are no rules. I go there, I can post what I want, about what ever, and the people are cool. We are all good friends, and we have fun.

Groups need good people, than a purpose, than fancy gimmicks. In that order.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Features, ranks, gimmicks are all worthless. If you can't make a good group without them, how do you think you're going to make a good group with them?

Kids these days. So busy clammoring over features and crap that they never recognize that what's really important is in the core.

Heh. Fabulous.
And I think that everything should be done in moderation. Too many gimmicks will make it difficult to focus on what your group is actually there for, and too much "core" leaves the group seeming a bit dry, and possibly empty.

OMG
Master Chief w/o his Helmet!

Stosh <3's me vicariously... at least someone does...

All a group needs is a bunch of close friends who enjoy each others company and play games together. That is what my favorite group was founded on.

I think more group interaction is definetly needed. Well, not needed, but it would be cool and likely increase the popularity in groups.

On-topic: You're not a failure as long as you keep that avatar.

We need a revamp of groups. I know it is too much to ask but sue me.

We need more theme approval (perhaps allow this privelidge to theme masters) more group to group interaction and more customisation among groups in general (think colours, tourney pages, video/site/resource linking).

I am sick of seeing the same crap in every group. So far the most outrageous thing I have seen lately is someone using the ONI theme... WOW!
We need some Elite themes. I am working on a theme myself, it is going slow. Photoshop is a hassel for me until I learn how to use it.

I belive that a part of the problem with groups dying is that the 1 making the group, and mostly focusing on that particular group, seems to think that its members are going to give it the same focus. Most members are usually members in other groups too, which is positive for the community but kind of sux for the individual group. Competition can be a -blam. But im all for a maximum of 3 groups/member. Thats a good number.

He watches every Hodgetwin video they put up...on ALL their channels. He calls them the Hodge Triplets, and considers himself the 3rd triplet. He's started talking and acting like them now. Every other line out of his mouth "Thaaas some BULLLLLL**** maaayne" or "Gotta make dem gainzzzz". He calls his biceps "gains". When he eats post-workout, he talks to his biceps, "Don't worry gains, I'm feeding you. Daddys gonna feed you, gainz *kisses biceps*".

There are plenty of social groups out there. Make one with a purpose. That's my only suggestion.

There are simply two things not making good groups, the founders don't spend enough time in them, and two the features get old.
