I think its bull-blam!-....xbox was made for controller, otherwise they would have included keyboard and mouse with it. Keyboard and mouse is such an advantage over controller.....I play ALOT of CS, its so much easier to aim with keyboard, and there are so many more buttons you can reach faster than a controller. Also just the plain physics of moving a tiny little joystick with an outside object such as your thumb could not be as precise as an extension of your whole arm, ie mouse. I hope XBL can detect it and won't let people use it.
If you take any experienced Mouse user vs the best controller user i guarantee the mouse will win.

Sounds good to me, i will use mouse and anyone else can use a controller, i will take anyone on. I mean, just try this.....set up a 2 player game in halo, just let one of the players sit and take a sniper rifle, try and jump out from behind a wall and hit him in the head the millisecond that you hit the ground.....aint gonna happen (unless you line the jump up beforehand) which you will never do in a real game. In halo you can even shoot accuratley while in midair so its even easier...u don't have to wait to land to shoot. Maybe some people are not good with keyboard and mouse, but the potential is so much higher that after 1 month of play, u would be able to destroy anyone with a controller thats been playin for 3 years. Any CS cal-x player would own halo if keyboard and mouse were used, since CS has so many more variables in it such as, can't jump and shoot, can't run and shoot ect ect. If i wanted to use a keybaord i would just play cs, Halo was meant for a controller.

I think it is just preference of the player. I'm more comfortable with a controller than a mouse.

I agree with just about everyone else's that ive read. If you are better with the mouse and keyboard, use that. If your like me, and use controlers more, or just dont wanna spend that much money for the adapter, go for controlers. It's not a handicap.

ya thats true, everyone has there own preference. But what im saying is that people who are "good" with keyboard and mouse will be much better than a person that is "good" with a controller. Like i said before, if someone played with a controller for 3 years, and then all of the sudden picked up a mouse/keyboard for 1 month, they would be better in that one month than in 3 years with controller.

Like I said, it's whatever you prefere. But if the keyboard is so much better, Why are there so many controlllers for computer but only one or two deyboards for consoles?

Because controllers are good in some types of games on a PC, like driving- and platform games? The reason you won't be seeing lots of keyboards for a console is because, shock and awe, it isn't a computer and don't really have use for a keyboard outside of FPS games and the occational Strategy game. Although I suppose you'd see more of them if game makers actually supported keyboard and mouse controls.

You just said that mice are more accurate AND faster. If they are faster aren't they harder to target Because you move so much?
No. Well yes, if you suck. But thankfully it doesn't take too long to learn how to aim, which you would know if you had used it more than 5 minutes.

If the keyboard is so much better than why don't consoles have them as a standard?
Because they're not computers, as I've mentioned before? And maybe because consoles have more spread between genres (platformers, puzzle games, driving sims, beat em ups and so on) seriously you should've been able to figure this out for yourself. Keyboard and mice (as a control method) isn't really good for anything other than FPS and Strategy games, which the PC got plenty of.

I think the controller is better because they fit your hand better. Your fingers are faster on them because the buttons are designed for playing games. A keyboard is designed for typing. It would take me like an hour to make this paragraph on a controller just like it would take me like an hour to get a half-descent kill ratio on the keyboard.
That's just a stupid analogy, the reason it'd take longer to type using a controller is that you'd have to use a virtual keyboard or whatever. And yes it'd be really hard getting a descent kill ratio on a keyboard, which is why we use mice to aim and the keyboard to move around. And for me, personally, it doesn't take longer to press a keyboard button or a button on a controller. But I suppose it could have to do with my muscles working fine.

If controllers don't stand a chance against a keyboard, why do people go through months trying to come up with the best controller possable for a pleasurable and unfrustrating gaming experience?
Because unlike on the PC console games isn't mostly FPSes or Strategy games?

Key boards are good for strategy like age of empires but I think they can improve on shooters. ...oh, and keyboards make my wrist hurt sometimes. But I guess it's personal preference.
Keyboard work just fine with shooters as they are, I really don't understand what you want to improve? You press a button and you move, how much better can you make it?

That said I'm not too fond of the keyboard and mouse setup myself, it's just more comfortable to use a controller. But I can't deny that the keyboard and mouse is more precise when it comes to shooters, nor do I hold any illusion that someone who is a expert with the controller could beat an expert of the keyboard and mouse.

I find that I’m better at sniping close and far range on PC with sniper, but better on Xbox with pistol and not so good with sniper. But I do think keyboard is an advantage over controller because u can turn fast with a mouse and still have great accuracy.

As long as your mouse doesn't fitz out on you..

  • 10.13.2004 10:56 AM PDT

"If you knew how good I am you would think I'm modest."

With a mouse you control how fast it moves, you move your hand faster if you want to turn faster, you move it slower if you want to move slower, that is why it is more acurate, but anyways, like I said in previous posts you won't have to worry about it because there is no way possible that it will work as well as it does on the computer, because of the way halo 2 is programmed.

using a mouse and a keyboard can't be cheating. that's like saying wearing shorts in a football game is cheating because it gives you more movement (yeah, right). using whatever you want for Halo 2 is just your preference, doesn't mean your cheating or taking advantage of a system unfairly.

When halo2 launches, i would like to se who is the best player... The best one with mouse/keyboard or the best one with a controller?

I have played Quake 3 with both gamepad, and mouse/keyboard combo... im definetly best with the mouse/keyboard, but it does take a lot more time to turn... And i Halo, i prefer controller because there are so many more buttons to control that just granades and firing you weapon... its simply a lot easier with controller

It not cheating using a mouse and a keyboard, but one of the things i like about console gaming, is that everyone has the same controller, so that no one has a better controller than the other. This makes it a more fair play. but thats just my opinion.

Having actually used this device for a long time now, i can tell you that it is definately an advantage over using a gamepad.....any gamer that plays both PC and console games will tell you this. With deadzone adjustments and fully configurable controls, it really does make it like playing the PC version, with all the advantages of the Xbox software ;-)

Still, I wouldn't call it cheating. It's like telling people who use the s-controller that they should be banned because its better than the original controller.

Can't wait for Halo 2, this is gonna rock!

not to detour from the original thread too much, but I have to say that even when it comes to the gamepads it still is a preference issue. I personally prefer the original controller because my hands are larger and it feels more natural. I started playing with the S-type but it just made my hands feel cramped.

As for the keyboard/mouse vs gamepad issue, I have to agree with the people stating it's a preference issue there as well. To say that you could school someone just because they use a different controller setup on a game designed for console play is boastful at the least.

For example: say SXXX using a the keyboard/mouse combo schools me while I'm using the old fatty controller (which I'm sure is what would happen). Now does this mean that the keyboard/mouse is a better setup, or is it that I'm just a poorer quality player? I would argue the latter.

Now I know people are going to break out info on games designed for the PC to argue their point that, for them, it is better. I am not denying that for these games it would be an advantage (especially FPS). I think that on a console though, the advantage would be nullified due to the build of the game.

To say that using the keyboard/mouse is an better may mean that a person is just not as good with a gamepad and vice versa. Just a thought. Please understand that I am NOT slamming anybody or their "skillz", just trying to see the discussion from another angle.
(sorry so long)

qualityrape and wired are right on this one... the keyboard/mouse dominate the controller. when i saw this contraption was coming out, i shed a tear for halo 2. if this thing is a flawless reproduction of an acutal k/m combo, the controller will become obsolete for competitive console FPS gaming. i only hope live will find a way to detect this thing and BAN it, b/c if they don't, it will springboard it to being the standard for console FPS, which sucks. a lot of why i like halo is b/c everyone is on a level field. it makes no difference how good your graphics card is, how big your processor is or how much ram you have, b/c everyone is playing on the same xbox. if this thing works, people using controllers will get their butts kicked and have to drop $$ on it. plus, how much will it suck to not be able to just pick up a controller and play. i already hate this thing.
