Whenever I start Halo an error message appears that says "Cannot allocate required memory. Some other application has loaded where Halo needs to be located."

What does this mean, and how do I fix it?

Thanks,
Kangaroo

You dont have enough memory, or it is allraedy in use...If it has a button that says "continue anyway" click that..and you might be well on your way to becoming a Halo knight!

What version of Windows do you have? If XP I can help you get more memory freely.

Heyyo,

Err.. usually you just wanna let windows xp control your virutal memory, cause it doesn't make that much of a change. How much free HD space you got? that could be your prob. Your virtual memory might be allocating that free space as you're trying to use it...

"Cannot allocate required memory. Some other application has loaded where Halo needs to be located."
Scan your computer for spyware and viruses. Once your computer is clean of malware, shut down any programs that you don't need running while you're gaming. Post back when you're done.

Find the virus using the "search file" and delete them from there. And go back to the virtual memory and set it default so that Windows could do it for you.

For everybody:

Please list your computer specs so that we can narrow down the problem.

I have no spyware or adware (I ran scans in various programs and nothing turned up). I have 2.83 GB free on drive C and that was more than what I needed to run Halo before (I got it about a year ago for PC). Now, though, it won't run and gives me the exact same error message.... any help?

I have the same problem. I am good on mem; both real and virtual, have done virus and spyware scans - none detected, and have clean booted so that nothing else is running. Was anyone ever able to come up w/ a fix for this?

Heyyo,

You guys got SP2 by chance? that causes problems with HaloPC... and many other programs actually... SP2 has lots of bugs innit...keep auto updating and hope that they release patches to fix it. ;)

uh the memory that they are talking about may not be the harddrive space. The problem may be the amount of RAM you have.

So I got a 128MB vid card, 512 MB of RAM, and about 80 gigs free HD space. I also do have SP2 installed but haven't had any problems w/ it. There is a MS KB article that says it has to do with meaya being installed, but I checked and don't have it.

I think maybe u guys have a program installed that you dont know. do you guys have some sort of server installed? I would recommend going to Add/Remove programs and removing one program at a time. .. then test the game.

I have done a lot of research on this error.. this problem happens on WinXP SP 1 as well. .. SP2 has nothing to do with it.

You can increase your RAM in two seperate ways.

The first being the more practical and less system threatening - Purchase more physical memory from your local computer hardware dealer. Another 512 DDR 400 chip'll set you back a simple $110AUD (around $74USD).

Or you can 'increase' your memory by using an application like Memory Booost Pro.
Though I wouldn't advise using such a program.

Your initial post sounds like you've got some form of nasty spyware that's somehow installed itself into your Halo folder, and which executes each time you attempt to run Halo, thus giving you that error message.

My suggestions would be to use these:

Spybot Search & Destroy - http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22262 ,00.asp
(SpyBot S&D is a free application with all features available.)

Alongside AdAware Personal - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
(AdAware Personal is a free application without all options available.)

Also: update and run your anti-virus software.

Also, as mentioned priorly - It's also a rather good idea to uninstall Halo via the Add/Remove Programs menu in Control Panel, and then going into My Computer --> C:\ --> Program Files and deleting the Halo folder (if it's still there after you've removed it).
Removing the entire Halo folder should get rid of any spyware that was attached to the Halo.exe file, making it safe to reinstall Halo.
