You should read Ringworld by Larry Niven. A lot of Halo ideas were taken from good Sci-Fi books.

To the question:
The Halos have a breathable atmosphere and gravity. That gravity is generated by spinning the ring. In Ringworld, the ring is much larger and there's a star in the middle, leading to the interior surface being habitable.

There's also a reason its called Halo. I've never seen a box shaped Halo. BTW I'm back from a blacklist! Anyone miss me?

LMAO!!

Halos are ring-shaped because halos are too, and it's an interesting concept. Halo just wouldn't be as interesting if it took place on a normal planet. It's also based off some science fiction called Ringworld.

Not to mention, a Halo is a ring.

Not all Halos are rings, some look like gold plates hot glued to the back of Jesus's head (no wonder he's always frowning). Anyways, they'd have to make a new name for Halo if it wasn't a ring, and making stuff isn't as much fun as stealing other people's ideas (*cough* MarineCorpsLaserProject *cough*).

It should have been "Rhombus".

the shape also has to do with it's firing mechanism. as seen at the end of Halo 2.

Because if it wasnt spinning it wouldnt have gravity. It's easier to keep in orbit and for many other technical advantages it would have over it being a box.
