I was going to post this in the extra-terrestrial thread but then I decided it needed it's own thread and a poll.

If space continues forever then chances are there is intelligent life out there. We probably will never find them but they probably exist. A lot of people think (myself included) that space does not go on forever but if you were to travel far enough in one direction you would some how end up where you started. The idea that anything could go on forever is just too dificult to believe. What do you think?

That's right. My plumage is brighter than yours.

this one always makes me think...if it ends, then whats past the universe? white, blank, empty, closed, open space that is so complicated that your head would explode if u somehow created a visual image of it? drives me insane

I believe that the universe is a sphere, so it has no real end, but no real beggining.

Doesn't it though? It can't be nothing because that's basicly what space is.

So are you saying, that if we reached the furthest reaches of the universe, we would cease to exist.

I think of existance as an echo or a ripple in a pond. Space spreads out, and closes in the middle. And the wave gets smaller as it extends until it doesent exist anymore... until existance collapses...

I dont expect anyone to understand what I just said.

Well, space is a complitcated thing. It is made up of blackholes which grow as they consume space as what we call it. And... (the info just keeps going.)

hey, im not insulting your oppinion or anything, but if ya think about it, if the universe goes on forever, then its not any shape in particular... or all shapes.. why not it be a triangle that goes on forever?... just a little food for thought...

i do understand what you said... its just hard to explain... eventually you travel to nothingness and become nothing... as if the universe is surounded by a black hole... with nothing on the other side... this topic is too complex for me to worry about... as long as i have my xbox... im happy...

Space is constantly expanding - and faster than we can currently think about moving through it -- so currently - space is infinite.

If Isac Newton had been content to sit in his house and read rather than wonder about why an apple falls from a tree where would we be today?

How could it be expanding? Space is nothing, and it is already infinite.

Space is exactly what the word itself means, space. Nothing. It goes on forever and ever and ever. What's expanding would be the universe.

The context of the question would list the term space as synonymous with the universe. In and of itself the word space does NOT define something infinte - space describes volume of a defined area -- Your definition is wrong StickMan. Sorry.

Space (used in context) IS expanding -- the universe (as base definition) is the term using the embodiment of space and all that's in it. As we have no way to measure or define anything outside our universe -- it is not defined as space...

Simply void. Sorry if I pissed in your cornflakes.

Okay, okay, so I got my words a little mixed up. What I meant was that the void goes on forever. And so that the space inside the universe is expanding.

The universe is closing.

Something without end? Just thinking about it is beyond me; everything I know has an end, but to be endless? It makes me wonder, where does the void end, where does it lead to? How can there be pure nothingness?
