It's just like my own desk, the only difference is that I work from home. I've found that loads of designers work (or in those long hours, live) in a garbage tip of a workspace. I think it's a mind thing; sometimes you might go through a phase were as your work seems a little crappy. So to make yourself feel better; you compare your work to your surroundings and huzzah! It suddenly looks like a promising piece of work.
It was the same when I was in college, just personalising our workspace.
