I am still considered a new member but I have been visiting the forums since 2003 and know my way around well enough. The bad stuff that goes on in the forums could be alot worse but I would like to do what I can to stop the crap that does pop up...

Charizard and all his forms, was a complete bastard. Him posting certain pictures of a certain woman, that was bad. But I did laugh at the way he made a new account 1 week before Halo 2 came out called 'Arbiter 5000'. Fortunately/Unfortunately, that was no big deal for me as I had seen a leaked version of the attract version along with a load of other members here (me being the only one who noticed the 'purple HUD').

But one 'spammer' (I'd say more, cheeky git, not as bad but a nuisance still I guess) who really was funny, was Twitch (Twitch666, BLOODPOTATO, Anewerdisease666 etc). I'm sorry, but I did howl with laughter when him, Canoli, and a couple of others put 73 pages of spam into New Mombasa. No mods were online, and as you can tell, this was before the big rush of members who joined here. All topics had the headline PEN followed by 1 and S with no spaces, and while it was childish as hell, I sat here with my mate howling with laughter. This is all he did. He was never racist, never posted filth, he was immature but in my opinion, a good laugh.

Anyway, enough memories. Just wanted to say to Mac (thread starter), you have my respect. Why? Because unlike all the other kids that now regularly make some slurry in the Septagon, you actually admit you want to be a Moderator. Rather than covering it up by trying to become 'bestest buddies' with Toast, or 'Shiska' (yes, I've deliberately missed out the 'h'), sucking up to them like they're someone important, you've flat out admitted you want to be a Mod. So I respect you for that. Not that it means anything, but I do.

There is always room for improvement though. I can see places where this community could flourish and improve - I think that is justification enough to at least attempt it.

Look the very fact that a mod. agreed with what I said shows that theres a problem that needs fixing. And i think us average members are the key to solving it.

I don't understand the topic. You say you want members to help out the community, but I don't quite get your idea on how. "Shaking heads" is a bit vague. If you mean telling flamers they are flaming and such I would disagree because not everyone can be sure of the rules.

The only thing members can do is set an example to all the negative members of the community. Create more on-topic and productive threads to set an example. But this should be common sense really, or at least I thought it was common sense. Some people do that, but a lot of people just think they can improve the site with suggestions in the Septagon which is, of course, crap.

I do think the average members are the key to solving it, but only as members, not as people who are pointing out faults. The mods should tidy the house, while the members start bringing in some really cool decorations.

The problem with this thread it seems is that everyone is thinking of ideas to stop spam and flaming, as a member, but members can't stop negative things, they can only ignore it, whilst doing positive things.

Meh, it's too early right now. Hope that made sense.

*Edit* I'll hold up my hands right now and admit that I've done crap-all also. :)

*Edit2* Oh yeah, when I say more ontopic threads I'm talking about New Mombasa, Halo 3 Forum etc. because this place usually seems very flame and spam free.

Indeed, it does stink that b.net has become what it has. This might even be the calm before the storm that Halo 3 will bring.

I don't think B.net is all that different, in fact, may even be milder in recent months.

Some of the spammers this site has seen were WAY worse than anything we have now. Some of the older members here will still shudder if you mention Charizard.

I think B.net has been nicer recently (that's why I'm visiting again - well, and because work can be boring). However, when I said I don't like what b.net has become, I was talking more of the general atmosphere, tone, quality of posts. The general quality of posts gets pulled down only marginally by spammers. They have their fun and then dissapear. Pointless, meaningless, and mean posts pull down the forums a lot more. In short, I think spam is something communities get past easily but lack of thought is a battle that won't be won soon.

But, again, the Septagon is great. Makes the 7 seem a little less dark(er).

However, in those forums there are numerous jewels of great informational posts (I've seen people do four page reports on the efficiency of one attack compared to another. Really.).

Part of the reason that this is that, in my time playing WoW, I've seen that there aren't just kids who play. There's family men, just working to get by with a kid on the way, programmers, hell, there's even the occasional doctor, or lawyer (or possibly someone studying to become one) who play. The audience it attracts is very different, mainly because of the costs involved in supporting your own account.

But the forums can be a mess at times. Probably because people with small brains usually have big mouths. And this pushes the majority of the community (20+ years old) away.

Though, you had to admire his efficiency.

Kudos JAY, I have to say I agree with you, the Spamming is bad when it is racist or crap like that, but sometimes I can get a luagh out of spam.

JAY, while I understand your point, I don't see how his saying he wants to be a moderator makes him better, but I will admit it is much more mature than the suckups who post stuff like-
PEzA is teh funy

or skiska you got it good.

Agreed.

The first part of the Mod/member initiative will have the moderators blacklist all members who try to kiss thier ass, and our role as members can be to humiliate them once those blacklists are over.

Im breaking my "only on-line during the weekend rule" but im going away next weekend so I'll just drop in...

Anyway, rainman98, the person who made the "Shishka you got it good" thread was actually ME (and im surprised you still rember that considering the fact that i posted that more than six months ago). And no, i was not "ass kissing). Its not in my nature. Although the position of moderating appeals to me I have no envy towards the moderators themselves. I do not give the moderators anymore respect than that which is required. I like the moderators because some of them are fun people. To say a statement like "Shishka you got it good..." to be an "ass kissing" comment, as you put it, would be like saying "Oh i would love to be bill gates and have all that money..." is an "ass kissing" statement. I was just saying that Shishka is lucky because he works (used to work) at Bungie and also gets to be a member of the forums.
