I made a thread in new mombasa, it was locked and I have no idea why. Whoever locked it left no comment so I'm still in the dark - and I have nobody to ask why it was locked! Is there any way to find out?

  • 08.16.2006 4:10 AM PDT

What was the topic of the thread?

The moderators don't always have the time to send messages out for each locking or deletion of a thread. I wouldn't worry about it, it was probably just spammed up or something.

Or mabie it was because it was titled "Halo 2 online is full of idiots"

Well I always try to give a legitimate reason before taking any action. I assume your thread was offtopic, done to death, or already addressed somewhere else (a sticky thread perhaps?).

Consider the fact that if a ninja assassinated a thread, why would they stand out in the open and say it was them, that's not ninja. Alternatively, it would be obvious as to why a forum got locked, if it is without comment.

Yes, that was it's title - it is here. I appreciate it's not a terribly nice topic, but it's very much on-topic and I didn't think it was addressed in the form of a senseless complaint or anything. I was just genuinely curious to hear people's ideas as to why Halo 2 seems to suffer from so many disagreeable players compared to other online games. I'm not trying to argue the locking of the topic, but it would be nice to have a reason why. Surely it wouldn't be locked simply because it could be mistaken as derogatory to bungie or the game?

Derogatory threads are fine in my eyes, and a moderator should have given a reason. Although, if they think that the reason is so obvious that the poster could see it, then maybe they didn't bother.

I find that even if I did not see the need to explain my lock, I send a personal message.

Well, I think we know it wasn't Recon, he almost always has something to say. I am guessing it was one of the more secretive ninjas.

Pezza, that's because the cold-hard reality that is Modship has not fully washed over your body. You have nnot yet had enough "ZOMXG LAL PeZza is teh funny" responses and " I will kill you" PMs in the same time span to kill your emotions.

At least that is what I am told happens.

Its cool. It makes them more mysterious...

Well, I wondered if it was something obvious, but nothing was staring me in the face. I thought it was widely acknowledged that you encounter a lot of bad behaviour playing Halo 2 online, and I wouldn't think a reasonable discussion as to why would need to be locked. It was on-topic, I didn't bump it, it wasn't spam, it wasn't a flame-fest. Just it would be good to have had a reason, because then what's the point trying to make good threads if they can be closed so arbitrarily? And if it wasn't arbitrary, why not give a reason!

Having read through the whole thread, I would have to agree with Quackers. There should have at least been an explanation as to why that particular thread was locked.

The Ninjas work "In the Shadows"- they'll lock threads and not need a reason to do so. And I usually agree with the decisions they make regarding locked topics. But this one is an exception. Having read through the Thread, all I saw was...........intelligent discussion. No flames, no put downs, no insults. Actual conversation. I don't know why it was locked.

If I had to guess, I would say this: Maybe they're tired of Xbox Live rants. Lately a lot of threads have been created that focus on the problems involving Xbox Live, and especially considering that "Glitch Threads" are being cleaned up, I would say you created something that was already done and didn't require discussion.

That's my guess. But I do think an explanation would have been nice, especially considering that people were acting mature and respectable in that particular discussion.

I would ask them at bnetmods@gmail.com, but since you already did this... nevermind.

I think I'm the one to blame. And all I can say is whoops, sorry.
Of course, I wouldn't be me, if I didn't put the blame on other things.

It was somewhere around 5 AM (or is that pm?) and I still was working (and still am! Excuse while I try not to moderate too much today). I believe there was also another thread about little children on xbl, just below it. Probably seeing both the Thread title and the other one right below it, made me lock it.
I just reread the thread, and all I can say is: I are dumd.

Of course, I wouldn't have to be moderating at 5 Am if some of the others were online....

ZOMG I was totally going to blame JAF. I would have been right. Rainman FTW!11!!!!!

But it's okay JAF, we still love you. All this does is make me hate TGP less.

Rainman's Notice: The preceding post was obnoxious, insincere, and utterly stupid. If you read it, your I.Q. should be dropping... Now. This post should be kept out of the reach of children, and adults of limited intelligence

I would say something, but that doesn't seem apropriate. Instead, I am going to just spin my chair around and go "weee!!"

I can appreciate that the people who posted in the thread were having an actual discussion, but it doesn't change the fact that its been posted in one form or another at least a thousand times since Halo 2 was released.

Mature conversation or not, now many variations of a theme have to be posted before the mods are allowed to lock them?

It should have stayed locked.

My 2 cents.

Why can't they just post in the thread they're locking? How hard can that be?

You have no rights here...Moderators post accordingly. If it breaks the rules, then you should have the common sense to know that it does. There was two things called the Code of Conduct and Terms of Use you were supposed to read before signing up you know?

Why should they have to leave a message? I know most of them do, and some send a PM but some should be friggin obvious. That and if they had to leave a message after each lock, they would get carpal tunnel with a quickness. They are here to police the forums, not write 30 pages of explinations every day.

The fact they bothered to answer this one, rather than lock just because you were asking about another locked thread proves they aren't on a powertrip.

I don't think this was a bother for them. Moderating is not a chore (or at least it doesn't seem to be.) Take Great_Pretender for example- he moderates when convienient for him. It's strictly Voluntary.

That being said, they are most certainly not on a power trip. I respect the moderators, but to be honest, I see them as people just like you and me. They just have the tools to take care of un-needed threads and un-needed members.

People look at them too much as gods. I like it when they post- but it's not like every word they say deserves to be "LOL SIGGED!!!"

I don't speak on their behalf at all; please don't take this post as an interpretation of that sort. It's just that they don't "bother" to read threads. They read them just like you and me- and on occassion, they'll read a thread to make sure it's following the rules, as opposed to showing personal interest in it.

They don't have to post. If they wanted, they could just do their work completely in the shadows, and simply lock and ban. But like you and me, they are human. They like to talk. Their decisions are based on the rules, and if we follow them, we will be fine.

This whole situation was nothing more than a........mistake. Yes, they make mistakes *shocker!* And it was handled. They can lock threads and remain anonymous if they want, but on occasion they choose to leave explanations and responses before doing so.

Things are fine with the moderators. Nothing needs to be changed. But the idea of a tabbed response for particular threads would probably be a welcome idea.

Not a sermon- just a thought. My $0.2
