I was looking in the underground and I was plagued by Locked threads... Do you think we should make the rules stronger?

print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x;

I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

I don't understand what your trying to say...

What do you mean by making rules stronger? Do you think we should send them to the gym to bulk up a little? I was thinking performance enhancing drugs but I know someone's going to complain.

  • 08.16.2006 7:56 AM PDT

1. We?

2. You want more threads locked?

3. I prefer to delete threads that are off topic for The Underground (well, pretty much anywhere) because locked threads make the place look "dirty". I don't delete threads that are off topic that answer a question for a user, because I want the user to have the ability to look back at the thread to get an answer.

4. I'm sure there's a 4 somewhere, but I can't think of it right now.

Read about the Forgotten Spartan I Program
Butane: To protect the world from devastation!
sir_brilliant: To unite all people within our nation!
Rainman89: To denounce the evils of truth and love!

SpaceGhostFlyer: Jessie!
Butane: James!
sir_brilliant: Team Rocket blasting off at the speed of light
Butane: Surrender now or prepare to fight
sir_brilliant: Meowth, that's right!

Captain K mart, I used to respect you, But know that respect has an asterisk next to it. Performance enhancing drugs. For shame...

The underground looks horrible (no offense to bungie) But when i came here maybe 3 or 4 months ago there were very few locked threads but when Halo 3 ws announced everyone and i mean everyone jumped on th bandwagon and joined the forums without reading the rules. I know everyone makes a stupid post, hey even i have had a locked thread but when i open the underground and i see 15-20 locked threads right in a row...i get sad

To be fair, one of those threads was moved to another forum...

The problem is probably that few people understand what "Bungie General" means. Some people probably think that if you have any topic that pertains to Bungie in some way, it will fit in there. It's probably part of the reason why there are Halo topics and questions about the forum. (The second part is probably that no one reads the stickies, and the third part is probably that it's the first forum you see. I'm not sure if there's a fourth part.) The problem is probably just that "Bungie Future Projects, Oldschool Games, and Anything Else That Pertains to Bungie as a Company Except for the Halo Series" was shortened to "Bungie General and Oldschool games."

I don't see what that has to do with anything.

Making the rules "stronger" would only increase the number of locked threads. If you noticed the threads that are locked, they are mostly threads that are completely out of place but were just simple questions that needed simple answers. The people asking these questions probably thought that since the forum is "Bungie General", that their question belonged there.

It just comes down to people not paying close enough attention to what belongs in what forums, so making the rules stronger will do nothing.

The only ones I can think of include limiting certain "rights" of the posters, namely the "right to live."

I suppose we could either require all members to take tests before they can post in or make new threads in a forum. That or find a way to better define "Bungie General" using only two or three words.

I understand now.

  • 08.16.2006 10:14 AM PDT

You must also take note that The Underground doesn't move as fast as some of the other forums, so threads that were locked hours if not a day ago are still on the front page. I know it looks bad, but it's just the nature of the forum.

This is why we should be focusing on a way to get people to actually read the Stickies. If only there was such a way...

Well I'm sure that if they implemented a little notice like "New Users, please read the stickies" or something like that, it would help. We already have the notice about how New Users have to wait 24 hours to make a topic, so maybe while signing up, a detailed explanation on the importance of the rules could be put in.

  • 08.16.2006 10:33 AM PDT

Ach! Was ist los?

Maybe if we changed it from "Bungie General and Oldschool Games" to something like "Non-Halo and Oldschool Games"...

Phrog pilots, reckless and free. We would strap into our birds, set the engines on fire, and leave these earthly bonds with a chorus of WHOP WHOP WHOP. Akin to beating your chest and howling in defiance at the rest of the world.

The other day I was going to quote "THIS IS NOT A HALO BOARD" until I realised that the HGN and Halo movie threw a wrench into my plan. I can see some new members being confused when they see "Halo Movie" and "Halo Graphic Novel" in several of the forums subject lines.

It would all be clear if people just read the stickies but sadly that seems to be far too difficult. We need something that causes physical discomfort when anybody tries to post about cheaters or Halo 2 Matchmaking in The Underground. Like a trunk monkey, but for the internet.

LoL, the Trunk Monkey? I love that guy. So handy.....

But yes, the stickies are there for a reason. Honestly, there would be such a noticable change for the better if new users (and current users alike) would read before they post.

Then again, a lot of it is the common sense some people are lacking. And I'm not talking about only new users here. Whenever I personally make a thread (which isn't that often) I make sure I scan the first couple pages to make sure this idea isn't there. Then I think:

"Is this in the right forum? Hmm....playlist issue......*ding ding* Optimatch!!"

Finally I put in a good Original (first) Post. Something people can discuss. But that's just me. Yesterday in The Flood, the most idiotic and inappropiate thread I've seen in a while was suddenly posted out of nowhere. What did this person do wrong? He didn't think. Instead, he made a right out offensive topic that got him blacklisted on the spot.

So what's the solution?: Stickies + Think before you post = Happy, safe Forum.

If only people knew......*sigh*

That's it! We will have tests! Before members can post or make a thread, they have to pass a specific test for each forum. They have to prove they know what they're doing. Perhaps they could even make a sample thread and sample post! If they pass, they can post. If not, they can take the test again the next day. They can look over the forums all they want, but until they pass, they can't do anything else. They can, however, join groups and the like (which will not be allowed to have such tests).

Now...if only we could find someone to design a test that only people who read the rules and the stickies could pass...

The Frozen Minority - The most infamous clan borne from the Seventh Column.

The main problem I have with the underground is that it is used for Bungie.net problems (glitches, search feature, etc) instead of the Septagon. Bungie General can be a little misleading.

I wonder how those name changes Achronos mentioned are coming along?

Threads get locked so what. It's just one of those days where people can't follow the rules. What kind of new rules do you expect? Bungie's rules are fine and that's all we can say for now.

What is that suposed to mean? Do you want to enforce the rules even more? That will just equal more locked threads and make the place look more "messy" Unless you want to personally go to everyones house and make sure they dont post anything off topic your just going to have to tolerate a few locked threads.
