If someone posts in the wrong forum because they didn't read the rules, shouldn't they get more punishment then just a locked thread? It's their jobs as members of Bungie.Net to familiarize themselves with the rules for each forum.

Yes, but you have to take into account, new members don't usually read the rules, or my guide to the forum.

I think the main problem is, the underground is Forum numero uno, and called Bungie Genral- people think it is for everything.

So then why should they stay? What I'm saying is that if they don't read the rules, then they should pay the consequences. It doesn't matter if a member is new or not- it is their responsibility to read the rules before posting on the forums.

Just like how it is your job as a citizen of wherever you live to know the laws. The police don't care if you knew the law or not.

That's going a bit overboard.

New members that don't read the rules, or Rainman89's forum guide, shouldn't be banned for not reading the rules, unless apparently they're here to be trouble. If a new member posts in the wrong forum or gets a thread locked, maybe even causes a bit of trouble, a moderator should point that person to a sticky with rules for them to read.

Let's just say -in real life- that you kill a man. You beg to the police "But I didn't know murder was against the law!" Is it going to change anything? No. If they don't take the responsibility of reading the rules, then they should pay the consequences of their fault.

Phrog pilots, reckless and free. We would strap into our birds, set the engines on fire, and leave these earthly bonds with a chorus of WHOP WHOP WHOP. Akin to beating your chest and howling in defiance at the rest of the world.

Posting in the wrong forum is slightly less sinister than committing murder Hobo.

As long as the person isn't being a complete jerk shouldn't they get a second chance? A lot of good members are here because someone once gave them a second chance.

That's a rediculous analogy. New members should be given a chance. Sort of like the 'three strikes you're out' thing. A simple human error, such as a thread locked or if they create topics in the wrong forum, they shouldn't be banned on sight. I feel this is a welcoming community we have here, and we defenitely don't want to ban someone for something so small. If moderators ban simply because they placed a topic in the wrong forum, new members won't feel too welcome here. The only reason a new member should be banned is either if their spamming or they're just creating too much trouble in the forums.

Just place yourself in their positions.

I find it hard to equate the two.

Let me put it this way: Would you rather have a member break the rules, then learn what they should do, then become a contributing member, or would you rather have any member who breaks the rules immediately banned, and become a very angry person?

Patience can do wonders for the community. Harsher punishments for members who break the rules because they didn't read them in the first place will just make more members who want to cause trouble.

I suppose it was a bad analogy. But the way I see it is that if a member is given a second or third chance, then they take it that there are no consequences. But then again, they could realize that there is punishment. Bah, I'm contradicting myself here. I guess I was a little extreme with my earlier posts.

Here's what should happen: A member makes a thread in the Underground about Halo 3. Another member or moderator tells them to post any and all threads about Halo 3 in the Halo 3 Forum, then points that member to any threads that may exist concerning the subject. Then a moderator locks the thread. The member has an explanation on what to do, and has received a punishment, but a minor one.

My job requires me to be kind to other people, even though I'm only speaking to them over a series of e-mails. Trust me when I say that a simple "Please" and "Thank you," or a short explanation can work wonders.

I think we all were, I might of had several encounters. Mostly with Yoozel...don't know why? But I remember him locking a-lot of my threads before. But I was wrong with what I posted or where I did post.

I've had two such encounters. One with Impurity (ages ago), and another with Yoozel (not as far back). The first was definitely something that told me what I should not be. At the time I was going through a stage that was just about as bad as "ZOMG lokked!" The next, with Yoozel, was actually just a reminder that driving a thread off-topic is a bad thing. A not-so-friendly reminder, but a reminder nonetheless.

I haven't made such mistakes since...Lucky me.

It says when you first sign in that you have to read the code of conduct and the rules.

Next to the name of every forum is a description of its purpose.

I figure those are two chances and by posting somthing in the wrong forum is your third strike.

If so, some of us wouldn't be here. Wouldn't you hate it if you were a new member, coming here for your first time, and you didn't read the rules (figuring you could get by), then you posted a thread in the wrong forum, and you were blacklisted for it? Don't you think someone would get really angry and make a new account, and perhaps want to spam the place because the rules were so harsh they didn't get a second chance?

Heck, the rules are also in the forums. If someone said something that was off-topic, they would get in trouble too. It's possible Recon may not be here if people weren't as lenient as they were.

Wow, what a waste of space, you could have posted something totally off topic near that 4....Come on, you know you want to...

I even think an experienced member should be allowed a little lee-way in that respect. What if they got confused with the tabs and posted in the wrong forum accidentally? Doesn't really deserve a ban.

I had run-ins with Reiginko and Yoozel, although slight, before I was a mod. And I'm glad I wasn't banned for them, because then I would have just left and stayed in the Myth community like some sort of little hermit crab.

I agree with TGP,

And to Recon- The first thread I ever started was My Fanfiction. However, not understanding the forums, I looked for it in the wrong place(not the front, idk why) so I posted it again. I was politley sent in the right direction by a member, and since then, I have learned to have patience with newer members, and to help people who need it. Of course, when I PM someone asking them not to post in all caps, and get the response
You are a -blam!- dork
It kind of turns me away.

  • 08.17.2006 5:11 AM PDT

I think the vast majority of people respond very well to an initial straightening out by a mod. A locked thread, a short ban, or even a simple post by a mod is enough for most people to get into line. (Mods - correct me if I'm wrong) Sometimes, it's not - and some of those cases could have gone better if mods had a way of leaving some information about why they took action.

I got banned by the Shiskinator for a week during my first month or so and never found out why - but I became even more conscious about what I was posting and started to really use the Do-Not-Reply button.

When someone is consistently an idiot, it's usually easy to tell and the banhammer can fall. So, I'm for locking threads but also leaving a message about why.

Allow me to give an example of that in action.

My very first post on my very first day as a member of this site.

I posted something silly and (I thought) clever. Not long afterward, my PM box lit up. I opened it to find a single red eye glaring at me and the following text.

Posted by: Shishka
If you can't be helpful, consider not posting. Tricks like that not only frustrate the person with the problem, it also gets you in trouble with the moderators.

After I stopped shaking, I replied, apologized, and tried much harder to understand what it was to be a helpful member and endeavored to be a helpful member myself.

My first post, my first incoming PM, my error. I was given an opportunity to "do better". I'd like to think that I did.

I did the same exact thing, except i didnt get a PM, someone just replied and yelled at me. I was given a second chance and i do think everyone should be given a few chances but what if the locked or moved thread were deleted? Couldnt there be someway of doing that automatically?
