News? Podcasts? Machinima? Active forums? Competitions? Jaffa Cakes!? OMG!
Thee Warriors!

Best. Mod. Ever.

In one or two threads I have seen recently, people are complaining about locked threads. They want to know why a thread had been locked and who did it. The latter seems less important to me as it could encourage personal grudges, but I think I have an idea for the former problem.

Perhaps, when a moderator is locking a thread, they should have a drop down menu that has a number of reasons for locking the thread.
For example, if say... Goweb was locking a thread for being double posted (As in two threads of the same topic, on the same page) then he coud select 'Repeated thread' or something similar.
When the post is locked, in italics at the top of the locked post it says 'Reason for locking: Repeated thread'.
This provides a quick simple way to give an explination of why the thread was locked, and prevents PMs being sent/recieved.
Perhaps 7 or so reasons like 'Wrong forum', 'Offensive content', 'Other' (for things that don't fall into available catergories), and so on.

Any thoughts?

THat could work, but It seems like extra features for nothing. I think it is the same as the search function- Not really necesarry, but we would like to have it.

Not a bad idea, but I have a feeling a lot of the time it will just be "Other: [blank]"...

I had brought up something like this for blacklists a while back, since it would make my life easier. Nothing has become of it... :-(

That's a very good idea. I think it'll definitly help out those who want at least some closure to why their topic was locked (in the obscure cases of course).

Automated message that says "Enjoy your weeklong vacation!" perhaps?

No, it's just plugging in a response instead of addressing the actual matter.

It would probably free up some time for the Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamublance crew. I like that idea. I also like Buttsocks...

Some members would like specifics, plus it shows other members exactly what is and is not accepted on the forums and sets an example.

Very true. But sometimes we should be aware of what is right and what is wrong. And we should also know what's up when the obvious threads that break the rules are locked. No explanations for those are needed. However, the threads that are obscure, or the person wasn't aware of what he/she did wrong- yeah. Those need some form of closure.

Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

Sometimes members are new and don't know right from wrong (even the ones with old accounts). Sometimes they don't have the sense to check the stickies or the rest of the forum to figure out why their thread was locked. What is obvious to you or me is not always obvious to new members (sadly). If a member's thread was going to be locked for an obvious reason, why would they make it if the reason it would be locked is obvious? I'd definitely find this a nice addition. Something between moderators not wanting to use time they could spend moderating to explain situations, and the need some new members have for explanations (which then prevents them from making a thread 45 seconds later titled "waht happend to my post!")

ah but it's very simple to avoid getting your thread locked. follow the damn rules.

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement

I feel as though most people who break the forum "rules" don't really care whether or not they are breaking a rule. If you missed the rules when you registered, and you ignored the stickies before you posted, I think you forfeit your right to an explanation.

Any grey area that exists in the locking of threads can be handled by pm. IMO, if the user doesnt even know of the PM system, and uses the "What happened to my thread" post, he can use his 7 day BL to read the rules regarding posting on Bungie.net.

Decent idea though. I just don't think its necessary.

I like. Not only would this help members who are in the need of learning all the rules of the forums, but it can also help out newcomers when it comes to posting new threads.

Ach! Was ist los?

It would save valuable time during periods of high traffic, but it is rather impersonal.

I suppose I'd use it if it were implemented, but some topics would still call for a written explanation.

That's rubbish though. How do you know what rule it broke? How will you avoid it happening again? Especially for the newer user. You know what happens when a new user gets their thread locked without explanation - you can guarantee they'll create topic after topic about it ("bungy why r u closing my threds?") until they get blacklisted or a mod explains it to them.

And no, it's not always obvious - many people wouldn't be asking otherwise. I was the creator of one of those threads asking about locked topics. As it turned out, Just Another Fan had locked it by mistake and kindly unlocked it again.

I'm not a mod, but it sounds to me like it would make things easier on them and easier for us too.
