Subject: My Computer Problems...

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Ok. Now this problem is one I have been trying to fix, unsuccussfully, for about a week now. My piece-of-s**t computer has two 40gig drives, one which I keep nice and orderly, never downloading any small games or aim plugins on, and the other one can be described in two words

utter chaos.

Now. I reformatted my GOOD drive (compared to its companion, at least) about month and a half ago. I had Starcraft, and its expansion, Brood War on my good drive. When I reformatted I lost my game and its expansion, so when I went to reinstall them I realized I had lost their CD key. I was pretty dissappointed that I wouldn't get to play the game anytime in the near future but I eventually let it go. Now I haven't visited my second drive in quite awhile, this being the chaotic P.O.S drive so one day, out of pure boredom, I decide to go there. When it boots up I am startled to see Starcraft and Brood War Icons on my desktop! I immediatly go get their CD's (which I had kept) and try the original version first. The CD is too scratched to work. With a small amount of hope left I insert the Brood War CD. It works! I go to launch the online play but it wont connect to the internet. I figure my internets down so I shut off my machine and me and my brother powercycly the router. Still no luck. So I try the internet out on my good drive to find out it works perfectly. Slightly perplexed, I boot off of my second drive again and the internet still wont work. I have reached the conclusion that I have to reinstall my second drive. But heres the problem. If I reinstall then that means I have to install Starcraft and Brood War again. First of all I dont have their CD keys, but more importantly, my CD for Starcraft is broken. If I leave it how it is I lose the joy of online play. I cant seem to figure out how to get the internet working either. I apreciate whoever took the time to read this horrendously long question and any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

That's what happens when you use Outlook and Internet Explorer.
If you realy want to use a good browser use Mozilla Firefox or Netscape.
Becouse Internet explorer is so slow and it's old....
I think you use Windows....

If you're smart you should use Firefox and just re-install windows and don't use Outlook or IE or other stuff like that...
But go download Mozilla, you will see it's better...

I see... you want me to download these when I have no internet access on my second drive? Please evaluate... my problem isnt slow internet, its getting the internet to work!

Have you set your networking properties to fetch an IP from the router? A better question would be, can you access your router administration page at all from your second instalation? Can you ping webpages through the command prompt? Also, tell us what Windows version you are running.

The simplest solution would be to go out and buy the Starcraft Battlechest, seeing as how it's dirt cheap nowadys. What is it, like $15 now? :P Then pave and rebuild.

I suppose... but still. If there was any other way to get it back then I would rather do that. Saves the time of driving, saves 15 bucks, and plus this would be the third time I bought these games. We dont have a good history...

I run Windows XP Professional Edition. Havent tried to ping any sited from the Prompt yet. I suppose I should.

Well my brother said that mabye when we power cycled (after checkin my IP in prompt) my computer sorta... stole, for lack of a better word, the modems IP. Sound sane to anyone here? (BTW: My IP is differet from what it normally should be)

Lol, sounds like you'd better stay away from Starcraft if you've had to buy it that many times. ;) I understand about spending more money a driving and whatnot.

Please answer the ping question when you get around to it, as well as any other questions you've left unanswered. Regarding your computer "stealing" your router's IP, I hightly doubt that. Does your IP start with 192.168?

Sounds like the second/ Bad hard drive is the problem. How many times have you ran a Virus scan on it, since you downloaded stuff.

I beleive it DID, now, however, it starts with like a 168.xxx.xxx.xxx

168 is not the correct address type. Your computer is not pulling a private IP from your router. Go to Start --> Settings --> Network Connections --> Right click LAN Connection --> Properties. Click on Internet Protocol, then Properties button. Most routers require that you have the two settings on the General tab set to obtain information automatically. Verify that your computer will "Obtain an IP address automatically" and that it will "Obtain DNS server address automatically."

Also, check to see whether you can access your router's configuration page. Verify that it is set up to act as a DHCP server. In addition, because you may have cycled your router while your computer was on, restart it for changes to take effect (unless you know how to manually release and renew IP addresses, that is).

Finally, here is a FREE antivirus for you to use. Download it, use it, love it.
