Is it true that if you have a good DVD drive and a high end video card, you can get an emulator to run Xbox games on your PC? Or is that illegal?

There's an xbox emulator devoloped by some college kids. Funny thing is, it only runs Halo...

And yes, apparently it is illegal to have an xbox emulator or any other emulator.

Although I suppose NES, SNES and the other old time systems are fine since they're no longer in production.

There is an emulator for the Xbox, but it's in it's earliest stages, only supports one game (Halo), frequently crashes, and you're lucky if you can figure out how to get it started.

A decent Xbox emulator will probably come around at the end of the console's life time, so we should start seeing better emulators soon.

And no, it is not illegal to have an emulator and ROMS, just as long as you already have the games and the console themselves.

Don't see why it would be illegal. You've still got to but the xbox game, and instead of paying $150 to Microsoft for an Xbox, you're paying Microsoft $1000 for your computer and operating system.

I can understand that. Halo is the only Xbox game worth playing on the PC. Wait... Does that mean it won't emulate Halo 2? Because the whole reason I asked is because my parents probably wont let me "screw up" the computer with Vista. (Because they are technologically ignorant) So, I am going to have to get mey Halo 2 fix some other way.

Dude, you'll make the transition to Vista anyway eventually. It's not a matter of "If" it's a matter of "when".

They will make emulators that overtime will support more and more games, so I think I see a possible Halo 2 rom on the horizon.

Emulators are not illegal because they are just programs that emulate consoles. ROMs are games that are copywrote(O.o) that have been ripped and illegally distributed. No matter what all the disclaimers say, ROMs are illegal whether you have them for 24 hours or 2 minutes.

Unless you own a copy of Halo for Xbox already, in which case it's murky legal ground where you can argue in court that it's your backup copy (allowable under EULA). Though it's unlikely to get that far.

Note: Halo PC does NOT count as a copy for Halo for Xbox.

Right. Sometimes the obvious needs to be stated, so good job, Reaver.

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

In reality, roms and emulators are only illegal if you do not own the original copies. For instance, if you have a Playstation 2, it is legal to have the emulator. If you lose your Playstaion 2 or break it somehow, you have to destroy your emulator, because you no longer own the system. However if you still have the games, you can keep the roms.

Emulators are never illegal. They are coded to emulate a console therefore, arent infringing on any copyrights.

If you have a game, and you rip it yourself, it is legal for you to keep for yourself as backup as long as you dont distribute it. Otherwise, see my other post.
