When it comes to computer I'm about as educated as a retarded monkey, so I need your guys expertise.

When Vista comes out I don't know if my computer will be able to handle it. (probably not)
The problem is I don't know anything about computers and I don't know what I need or even what I presently have.

I don't think anyone knows yet but I was hoping you guys could give me a ballpark on the type of software I'll need and a ballpark price.

I trust your guys opinion so I thought I would ask you guys first before I take my computer anywhere.

I appreciate any advice or recommendations you guys can give me.

If you go to Gateway.com or Dell or HP or anyother manufacturer's website, where it lists all the goodies the computer has inside, usually it will have a line called "Future Operating Systems", and it will say if it is Vista Capable or not.

For Example:

I would reccomend not trying to build your own computer, as if you have no experience, it may turn out badly. As for price, anything without integrated graphics is probably going to run above $700, and lower than $2000. That's just for the base system, by the way. If you want to upgrade to 21 inch flatscreen display and 4GB of Ram, its gonna cost you a couple grand extra.

Well a friend told me I should get a better processor, video card, more ram,and whatever else I may need.

The only problem is I don't know what my computer has got in it.

Goto run on the start menu, type in dxdiag, hit enter. On the first page, tell us what it says next to "Memory"(third from bottom). On the Display tab, tell us what it says in the Device box next to "Chip Type" and "Approx. Total Memory". Finnaly, go to My Computer, Right-click C Drive, got to Properties, and tell us what it says for Used Space and Free Space. Used Space + Free Space = Harddrive Size.

That price tag is for the minimum configuration you can have. It goes up from there, way up if you want it to. The minimim should run whatever you want fine. The only thing you need to remember is that the DX10 capatable cards are not out yet so you will probably be upgrading the video card in the near-future, but when they come out this thing will run them well.

Don't buy from Dell, you can save a few hundred bones if you build it yourself. Check every spec and compare it to the prices on newegg and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I would Reccomend getting my pride and joy. Its a Dell Inspiron E1705 and you can look at its specs in my sig. It is also Vista Capable. It's price is $2050.00 total.

  • 08.19.2006 6:37 AM PDT

The XPS 700 is his choice, and better, slightly, but, id recommand a desktop, not a laptop.

YAY! Snorky is back!
Yeh, go the desktops, they are soooo much easier to upgrade. And repair. And locate in a hurry. And harder to steal, and break.

please don't go dell/gateway/hp/any big brand.

you'll regret it a few years later. I'm serious, you may think the prices are cheaper, but let me explain.

First off, if you've got a dell, don't expect to ever upgrade it. Dell saves cost by buying motherboards with features cut off that you won't be using. Anyone tech savvy has heard the horror stories of AGP ports being cut off, and extension slots completely missing.

Secondly, I was doing research for a friend just last week in fact. In summary, building the computer he wanted=$1300
building computer from custom site(like cyberpower)=$1377(with shipping0
computer from dell=$2100
computer from stupid overpriced alienware=$2400

Hopefully that speaks for itself.

And whoever recommended against building a pc has obviously never done it before. It's as easy as putting wires and cards into the slots they belong. If they don't fit, they don't belong. It's that easy. Plus you learn how computers work, and know the inside of your computer, and can fix/upgrade easily on your own.

halohugger:
if you add another chip of ram, upping it to 1gig, you should be perfectly ready for vista. Actually, if I remember correctly there's a "vista preperation" software or something like that that tests your system. Not very sophisticated, but it works.
