I've e-mailed Bungie and Microsoft on this but gotten no specific reply yet.
I'm a "Southpaw." It's been ingrained ever since all those endless hours of Turok, GoldenEye, and Perfect Dark on Nintendo 64. Bungie was considerate enough to include a Southpaw configuration for Halo, but left room for improvement. Since your right thumb, which controls character movement on the right thumbstick, has to be taken off to push the buttons for actions like jumping and melee attacks, it's very awkward. It's downright unfair against experienced players using the Default scheme.
It's obvious that jumping and melee attacks take a MUCH greater place in Halo 2. Unless Bungie follows this suggestion, Southpaws like myself are going to have a very hard time competing, and control should NEVER be an issue for anyone in a game of this type.
I wrote and asked for Bungie's development team to map the A, B, X, and Y buttons to the Directional Pad for the Southpaw Configuration. As the D-Pad is currently not used for anything, and is set on the opposite side of the controller, it would be an excellent solution to this problem. Another solution obviously would be to allow for total player customization. But like I said, both they and Microsoft have been mum so far.
What do you folks think? Is it worth getting together a petition to bring the idea to Bungie's attention? From where I stand it is, even if I weren't a Southpaw. Everybody should be on equal footing when Halo 2 ships.
Thanks for hearing me out. Let's let them hear us all, Southpaws!
