I think that what we really need is MORE threads about moderators, moderation, moderating, mod-anything. God knows thats what the Bungie community was founded on, posts about mods.

If people didnt waste so much time in here trying to jerk-off the mods, it wouldn't be such a bad place.

I don't think it's that. Even though lately there have been quite a bit of subjects about the Ninjas.

Most of the threads in question deal with:

1.) Curiousity (How do they work, how to become one)
2.) Criticism (You do this well, but you need to improve on a few things)
3.) Inquiries (I have a question that's aimed to you)

The solution? Well most people don't know about the FAQ's and Articles in HFCS. You'd be surprised as to how much just thumbing through it increases your knowledge on the subject. About the criticism, well maybe a PM to one of Master Ninjas could help reduce on the amount of threads made.

what i know and think.

post alot.
let them be known to you
don't be a suck up
dont be an ass
be a "good" forum cop
don't reply to spam
also, you have to be a member for awhile

also, i think you need to be familiarized with bungies oldschool games and or a group about those games.. i think...

anyways.. i think that last part makes no sense cause it doesn't partain to the forums as a whole.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

I am a moderator in my group and it happened rescently im not sure when it happened exactly but i was just dominating the forum and i posted a topic asking where everyone was and the group leader posted back saying i was the forum dominator and when i replied i had a "moderator toolbar" where i can make a topic a sticky and choose to lock topics at will im quite excited really. i hope that helped you out a bit im still sketchy on the details myself

Sh4dox

Btw the group i belong to is "Halo on Xbox 360"

I can't imagine how you flaunting that you were made a mod in a group could help him. You didn't really attempt to answer his question, from what I read. Sounds like you just want people to know you're a mod in a group, hence why you put so much emphasis on it.
Simply put, be an outstanding member with connections. First part speaks for itself. You need to be top-notch, grade-A moderator material or nothing will happen. Follow the rules and go above and beyond. But also, you could be the best member in the forums, but if none of the mods know it, then you've got no shot. Not to mention that it's impossible to keep bias totally out of the picture when they decide who the new mods will be.

They come to you on AIM and be all like "Your a mod now -blam!-! You start tomorrow."

Or thats what i've seen from other forums... Must be the same way here. :-/

I wouldn't dream of thinking that I know what an individual's motives are in a specific situation, but there is a reason someone clicks on "new topic" instead of the PM button.

It's attention that's wanted. Well, that's a bit of stretch, but subconsiously, whenever someone makes a thread in The Septagon, they want a moderator or three to post in it.

What's the easiest way to get a moderator to post? Make a thread about them. Why so much emphasis on what you guys have to say? Who knows. Maybe people here just like to hear you talk. Or maybe they're looking for funny things to "S1G!!!"

Whatever the reason, a thread made about a moderator is made (most of the time) with the intent of drawing you guys out in the open. Then the thread creator feels good about himself because: "Zomg, a mod posted in my Thread!!"

*edit*Not all threads are this way. Take Shai's for example. That thread was just a wake up call. Not a cry for attention.

I actually dont think the community sucks, but I will say this constant attention to everything moderator related in The Septagon for the past 2 months is nothing but mod worship coming from those who think that by acting nice and posting in every moderator related thread will put them in good graces with the mods and in turn, with Bungie. (yes, its called a run-on)

A person can disguise sucking up for only a limited time before it becomes apparent who will grab thier ankles at the request of a mod.

I am aware that there is a current influx of people into the forums who may not be aware of FAQs, etc. How long should the community be stunted by those who are too lazy to go and find an answer? Question: If or When you have children, would you accept your kids teacher saying, "We understand your son is seventeen, but we have a few mentally challenged people in the class which doesnt allow us to teach anything higher than basic addition, I mean, you don't expect us to leave any child behind"? Would you accept that? Well, thats whats happening. The greater Bungie community is being stunted by a few Bungie challenged individuals.

The phrase "You're only as good as your weakest link" comes to mind. Why do we cater to the weakest link and allow them to dictate the direction the community goes? I don't know the answer, all I know is thats whats happening.

To be honest, the reason there's so much of this can be summed up in the following way:

A.) Members want recognition.
B.) Members want threads with a lot of replies.
C.) Members want to be "in" with the moderators.

This is more or less what I've garnered throughout my Bungie.net adventures. Along the lines, all of us have desired one of those things up there, and most of us desire all three. This why we have so many repeat threads, post spamming, and topics aimed at the moderators.

When you post a topic in the Septagon, people think that if they make it a moderator-related topic, they're going to have a lot of replies, a lot of publicity, and a lot of white text and custom avatar posts.

And a lot of the time- this happens. But can you blame people for wanting to be "popular" or "in with the mods?" No, I think not. Because at some point, we were all like that.

It's just that making a thread that's moderator-related kills all three with one post. Pardon the pun.

*edit* But sometimes, as in the case of this particular thread we're in, the Thread Creator was just curious.

The result? He's off for the week. Now what I think should have been done was a lock and explanation. Or a PM at least. However, as a member of the community, you should know better than to make a thread like that. It's a matter of reading the rules.

That was complete righteous.

That idiot deserved to be blacklisted.

_____________________________________________

Moderators do not need to post before locking or deleting anything; it's their choice. If they feel that something needs to be locked or deleted, then it gets locked or deleted. Why? Because they were chosen to decide those kinds of things. Of course he thought it was unfair; it has his thread. I didn't see the thread, but a week-vacation was righteous judging form that second topic he made.

The Moderators blacklist people for a reason. Always. Hasn't anyone noticed the only people complaining are the ones going: "shiska blacklistd me 4 no reason no fair".

I also think the new Mods. are doing fine. Most people would want to be liked on Bungie; so they post and have a good time.

You bring up good points. The only thing I'll add is that oftentimes people troll for mods to post in mod-specific threads (Ex. Question! Mods only!) since this is somehow in their minds related to the success/failure of the thread. Having a mod post in their thread is a moral victory, in other words.

-EDIT- ICEMAN ASSASS1N did a very good job of describing what I said above while I was busy writing this post.

But no, you are right, we shouldn't have to wallow in mod related threads all of the time. The question is; how do we fix it? Of course, the most common answer is to delete them, but then the thread creator would be inclined to ask again since he was unable to get a solid answer the first time. So, the most logical thing to do is to simply lock the threads with an answer posted shortly before. Another good idea would be to create new and original threads/ideas in The Septagon to keep public interest away from overly repeated issues. A prime example of this is GJJ's new Bathroom Reader project, and recent Bungie related contests.

However, there will be the select few (quite possibly, the ones who "benefit" from sucking-up) that would argue that mod related threads do belong here, and that they should remain to be posted in large amounts. My counterargument would be thus (which I will proceed to describe in the ever so amazing use of bullet points):

* The Septagon is a forum related directly to site issues (7th Column) and the community. It is NOT about improving your supposed "social status" which is at the core of most mod related threads.

* Posting about moderators could fall theoretically under the "posting about specific user" category and would therefore be illegal.

Because they are seen on a consistent basis and are never completely resolved once the sub issue arises?

Can you name every member of The Flood? It's nearly impossible, yes? So yes if I said threads about The Flood were about a single person, and should be banned, I'd be wrong. However, the mods themselves are apart of a much smaller selection of people (less than 20, if you ignore the ones that rarely post).

You probably shouldn't get your hopes up about becoming a mod. There are thousands of active users here on Bnet, and while plenty of them could be mods if were selected, and have the right potential, only a handful will ever be a mod. I myself could probably be one, but I'd much rather be seen as just a regular user guy.
