A few days ago I started having problems playing halo. I would put the disk in as usual, hit the play button when the menu came up, and then it would take forever to start up. After taking forever it would close down and some error would pop up (which I don't remember what it said) and it would ask me if I wanted to restart the game in safe mode or continue, etc. The same thing would happen getting me nowhere. So I reinstalled it, and it worked fine. But then the next day, it did the same thing again. I tried to reinstall it again, but now reinstalling doesn't even work! It stops at 83% done and this error pops up: "Halo Setup encountered a disk error while writing to the file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo\maps\sounds.map. Make sure your hard disk is not full, and that file is not in use." My hard disk isn't full...I don't get it.

There is always the possibility that the disk is screwed so check and if its screwed clean it or buy a new one. They are only $20 anyways.

It might also be a corrupted file like widowmaker said. The way I have fixed that in the past (Which means it might not work for you.) is to COMPLETELY ERASE all files associated with Halo so that it is like a clean slate. Then attempt to reinstall again. (Like I said it worked for me and I hope it works for you.)

Fellow MAW men please fill in any gaps I might have missed.

One of my close friends, also a lieutenant in my clan, had the same problem, well, only the installing part. His text wasn't appearing, and that was when I didn't know you can fix text problems by reinstalling mxmlenu.exe, or something like that. So he decided to uninstall, and reinstall, but when he tried to reinstall Halo again, his installation stopped at around 80-83% (just like yours) everytime. I finally went to his house to see what the problem is, and realized some scraps of Halo files were still left in his computer (most probably because the uninstallation was interrupted, so all the files couldn't get erased). I erased every known traces of Halo related files from my friend's computer, and he tried reinstalling then. And miracolously, it had worked! So my opinion on your problem is that your uninstallation could've been interrupted, and there are still a handful of Halo files installed somewhere in your computer. My suggestion is...:

Click the Start menu, and find the program Search (it should have a magnifying glass icon next to it). Click it, then type in Halo in the search box, and see if your Search program detects any traces of Halo files in your computer. And if it does, delete every last one of them, then try reinstalling.

Hope I was a bit of a help. Good luck.

I suggest you reinstall Halo.

If you have read more, you would know that he tried that. Can you at least be more helpful?

And if you payed a little more attention you would've noticed that I am a SHE.
Problems been fixed already. I asked my brother about it earlier and he simply cleaned the disk and it worked.

Terribly sorry for calling you a he, but if I don't recall, I tried my best to help you. You don't have to attack me by saying I was ignorant enough to have missed that you were a girl. That's the last time I expect some thanks when I help someone.

I wasn't attacking you, I was merely pointing out the facts.

Two things that might help.

1)Delete "EVERYTHING" to do with halo of your computer. THen do a Defragmant of your computer.
2)Your disk might be scratched, try getting it reservased. Cna be done at most Music stores. i.e HMV, CD Plus. Cost about 5 bucks max
