Narwhallace Smithington: Gone, but not forgotten. Never approve of anything lil guy. <3
Furious George: The new -blam!-

Many people still use the "join dates" as leverage in arguements or simply for the sake of "because we can".

Some decided to post them in their signatures for "easy access". Shishka refered to it as...

Posted by: Shishka
"Would it be okay if we're elitist in our sigs, since you won't let us wear our join date like a medal?"

How about, if you want to know someone's join date, you open their profile?

There's still a problem there. The join date is in their profile. I know I'm probably being nitpicky and I don't post in The Septagon regularly, but why have the join date in their profile? People aren't too lazy to click on someone's profile and then use their join dates in an arguement.

Why not make the join date invisible altogether? This isn't my first account; I've been around since 2004 (which still isn't that long), and I could care less about what date it says next to my name or in my profile. People's opinions shouldn't be disregarded based soley on the date they joined.

I hope I don't make anyone mad. I doubt this thread will change anything. I just decided to post it and see who agrees and who disagrees. I'm pretty middle of the road on this debate; honestly if join dates stay, I won't complain. It's a proposition on something that I think would better the forums, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for reading.

There'll always be elitism, and that won't be ruled out by this, even though it is a good step to removing it.

The most annoying thing about having to look in someone's profile is that it uses the American date system (which is bad enough anyway), but coupled with a time it's just a mess of numbers for me. :\

It would be cool if they catered to the rest of the world by using their standard date system when that account was made from there. For example say you're from Europe and you make a bungie.net account, the date systems for everyone that you look at is in your standard date system.

Sorry for digressing (especially so early on in the thread). Elitism is sadly the biggest problem on these forums. Not many people notice me on the forums and I'm fine with that. Some people make it their goal to become the most known (in their eyes "best") person on bungie.net. This by no means is to target those on the "most active members" list floating around in the flood. Those people don't purposely try. People will do anything to become the most known (especially the ones who have old join dates). I would think they would be the more mature (since they should know how things work around here), but that's generalization, which I don't want to do.

But people follow by example. It's better to have people trying to be Mods (with improved grammar and syntax) than have a bunch of rampant morons who can't spell or construct something anywhere near a sentence. So on that point, I don't see anything wrong with people trying to be the best they possibly can, but it's when people gain an ego along with it.

We'll wait and see if this has any effect. It's early days yet.

EDIT: Yes, I would love to have a European date system. :)

What difference does it make when someone joined? It doesn't make you smarter, more clever or better than anyone else. I applaud B.net for removing something that doesn't need to be there anyway. Read, relax, have fun man.

If I do look to see what their join date is (like I had to today when I suspected someone was new to the forums), I can't tell what the date is as the date system is different. If I do manage to decipher what the date is then it's usually after about a good minute of grief later. :@

Best. Mod. Ever.

To be fair, I do think that how long someone has been on the forums does have certain effects, mainly experience.
They may have been on other forums in the past, but like all big ones, Bungie is unique and they may not know the communuty as well as some of us would. These are things that take time and personal experience.

Yes, I think that's it. A person who's been here longer will know answers to more topics (as most now are repeats), and so of course they will be senior so someone who's just guessing!

But you have to look at the fact that people who joined to years ago might not be as good as someone who joined two months ago. If they didn't join less thana month ago, they are probably in the same league.

Look at a guy like ICEMAN, he has been here four months, and he is already a respected member of the community, more so than most two-year members.

Join dates mean nothing, actions do.

He's respected in some parts of the community. Other parts of the community would probably rip his eyes out with an ice pick, given half a chance. Then the rest of the community doesnt have a clue as to who the hell he is.

See, some people aren't lazy enough to not click the profile. Though you might be too lazy to read everything. Read part of the sentence just before the part you bolded.

Trust me, I know what date I joined on this account; it's the same day as my sister's birthday.

Well.. I think we should let the way it is now stay for a couple more weeks and see how it is at the end of that period. Ever since the dates were taken out, people are making threads and finding other indirect ways of "flaunting" their join date.
If join dates are removed completely, than it will just be something else that will promote elitism.

I'll agree with you there. They should stay for a little while longer just to see. I was just proposing the idea to nip a potential problem in the bud. People will flaunt their join dates, but if the join date was removed now some people wouldn't have access to their exact dates. Some will probably flaunt fake dates for a week or so, but after that it could be the end of that form of elitism.

I know and agree (halfheartedly) with the fact that some, even most bungie.net members are too lazy to click on a profile to see the join date, but the ones that choose to flaunt their join date are the ones that aren't lazy enough to stay away from the profile.

Holy crap! I didn't even notice that the join dates were taken out until I read this post. Wow.

Anyway, I think that complaining about the join date being in our profiles right now is premature since it hasn't even been around long enough for us to make a full assessment of the effect it has. So like Sgt says, leave it until further notice.

Well it appears that the latest craze is to put join dates in the Sigs. I honestly don't see why the date you joined this site has to be so important. It's so pointless.

I do agree, but as me and you know by expeirience, people just think that if you joined earlier you better than everyone else. Putting your join date in your sig is highly immature and makes no sense what so ever. I wish there was a way to ban all the prejudice people on this site.....

To be honest I'd rather people have their join date in their signature than some pretentious "crew" that they have. I think that's a whole new level of elitism; over and above anything that join dates could have produced.

Well, that's just MY opinion.

It is your opinion and I respect it. But I don't feel it elitist, as I'm not saying anyone is better than anyone else. Those guys in there are the people who actually bothered to give a damn about me when no one else would (back when I came here).

I just see it as a way of saying "Thank you" to them. How you interpret that as "You're better than me," I don't know.

Phhh...a join date is just like a level in Matchmaking. It's just a little number next to your name that means absolutely nothing when it comes right down to it.

Well, crew, to me, just seems to suggest that you have control over the people, or that you are the leader of your "crew". Also, putting people into your "crew" without their permission isn't really all that nice, especially if people misinterpret it as a group of people you have control over, rather then just your friends.

Just my opinion.
