Sorry. I'll remove it all together. I didn't mean to cause any harm.

There is no harm done, just if you call the people your friends instead of your crew, there would be less turmoil about what it actually means.

Now I have to PM my "Friends" and let them know that I can't give them a shout in my sig. But if it's what you and the community want, I can't help but comply.

What other things do I need to fix about my character?

Now you are just throwing a fit. You should have PM'd them in the first place, and the word crew seems like a group of members to me, and since you had your crew in your sig, it seems like you own your crew. If you were to just change the word "crew" to the word "friends", then we wouldn't be having this conversation. There is a difference in such words.

Furious George: The new -blam!-

Please don't let the topic stray. Does anyone else have logical arguements on whether the join date should stay or not?

(I really don't mean to bump - even though that's what it looks like -- I really don't want the topic to stray)

Sorry. I didn't intend for the thread to veer off course like this. I won't post about this anymore, but save one final explanation of my actions:

Hobo, you're the only one I put in there without permission, and I apologize. This whole "Crew" thing came about as the result of High Truth adding me to his Sig, so I felt it necessary to show him a Thank you by doing the same. Everyone else in there has either PM'ed me and asked to be in it, or I told them I was putting them in.

And apparently I have been upsetting the community as of late. Apparently I play excessive "Forum Cop" and my ideas are "Contorversial."

For that, I am sorry. All I ever wanted was to be a good community member and contribute. For some reason, I love this site. And I love posting here and being here. But ever since the "Mistakes in Moderation" thread, I've been viewed differently for some reason.

But this is just spam right now, and for that I am sorry. I won't go off topic in this thread again, I just felt that my recent actions needed to be explained.

Sorry, True Underdog. I didn't mean for this to happen.
Sorry community if I have done anything to offend anyone.

Right, sorry for dragging this off-topic.

Join dates as a whole should be taken off, but it wouldn't do anything to stop the elitism. People as a whole would need to be taken off this site to stop it...

Thanks Hobo. Removing join dates as a whole is a step towards ridding the forums of elitism. There's no way that we can ever stop it, but any step in the right direction is helpful. By getting rid of them in the profile people would have to resort to putting them in their signatures. Eventually many will get tired of it being in their signature and the problem could settle down.

I do agree with that. Although some people are so ignorant they will never take it out of their sigs.

I guess it's fair to let them keep it in their sigs. But to honest, I feel this is a big step in the journey to combat the elitism.

I only hope that none of the 06'ers try to do this to the 2007 members. Can't we all just get along?

That will take a long time, and alot of hard work. Although someday, we may all live in peace on bungie.net, no prejudice, spammers, nor flamers.

I wonder if all online communities go through this phase though? I've noticed several phases in my time here.

* The first was the awe of everyone counting down the days before Halo 2 came out (this isn't my first account, mind you)
* The next was people who criticized the game at war with those who were fanbois of it. (Bungie.net vs HS2.com ring a bell?)
* Then there was people randomly spamming. I remember seeing whole pages of locked threads. Others would tout their ranks and use those as "arguement settlers" (I remember seeing one instance where someone badmouthed Recon and used their rank - Recon didn't even give him a week off -- he simply said that rank doesn't apply to the forum debates; he's right).
* Here we are now. People have resorted to using their dates as forms of elitism.

This time there is a possible way (that's not very detrimental to the site) to slow elitism, even if it is only a little bit.

That last point kind of doesn't belong (I butchered that one :p).. I see the last and current bullet as the reform. With all the site upgrades and community stuffs coming up, and Halo 3 info slowly drifting our way, I kind of see it is a reform

Off-topic: If I may beat the dead horse for a moment..."crew" is another word for "bunch/pack of friends"...it does not imply that Iceman is better than anyone...he was just showing a list of people that are cool, admirable forum-goers...I don't really have a problem with that, seeing that I do the exact same thing with my sig...

On-topic: Join dates suck...they should only be visible to Achronos/anyone else from Bungie...

If someone uses seniority as an argument, they already lost the fight.

You haven't read a damn thing have you? Read before posting please.

I think taking join dates away is only one of many steps from bungie.net peace.

  • 08.19.2006 9:07 PM PDT

If it isn't Join Dates, its what Groups you're in. If it isn't the Groups you're in, its the people on these forums you 'socialize' with.

What I'm trying to say is, there will always be some form of elitism around. Remove the Join dates and that will be one form of it gone, but people will find replacements.

Take the join dates away, thats what I say; we don't really need them anyways.

Hey, that could be an awsome cheer.

If anything I would like people to judge on groups you are in. Because then they would at least have to do alot of work to see what groups you are in. And as discussed earlier in "the state of bungie.net" thread, big groups are nothing. And mean absolutley nothing aslong as it is fun it doens't matter if it would be the largest group or the smallest group. Aslong as it would be fun then I wouldn't mind. Aslong as the judgement of the join dates stop.

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

Why are you people complaining about elitism? Unless you plan on banning freedom of speech, you had better get used to jerks being jerks, after all "those who would sacrafice freedom for safety, deserve neither"-Benjamin Franklin.-HH

  • 08.19.2006 9:48 PM PDT

Eh, they'll still have their member ID number to brag about if they got rid of join dates altogether.

People aren't too lazy to click on someone's profile and then use their join dates in an arguement.

You'd be surprised.

I AM! And proud of it!
