thats like asking the spammers to come out.

  • 08.21.2006 12:17 AM PDT

Karma system? That would give people a reason to spam, to see how high up they can get. When they get to that height, they'll then be able 'impose' their level upon the younger members.

...Then there'll be some more elitism goin' on.

People were using Join Dates to take stabs at people in conversations (in a nutshell) - chuck in the word 'Elitism' (lazy me) and there you go, my answer as to why they removed it.

Trust me- if you thought Join Dates brought out the best in elitism.........

This idea is interesting, but it would cause so much more segregation in the community. Not to mention people with ego's would definitly say: "STFU, I'm higher than you so I win the arguement."

I had thought of maybe making a "Forum User Identification" system, but that was flawed too. Ultimately, we all need to be viewed as equal. Otherwise, peoples' heads would get too big.

*edit*I took out my previous comment about the 13-16 year old users and how this would affect them. It was too much of a generalization; I apologize.

Not to mention every child between the ages of 13-16 will spam like no other so they can "rank up."

Now thats hardly fair. Im at the tender age of 15 and I'd like to think of my posts as mature and well worded. Although i do understand your view, Many people do seem to do that.

On the whole, the idea could be nice. Many forums have it (e.g - a star for every hundred posts etc.) but here, with 2 million or so users there would be a burning desire for some to climb all the way to the top of the posting ladder.
Not much you can do against it.

*ahem*

Is it really needed? We don't need any "user levels", especially with the amount of people on Bungie.Net.

My mistake. You're very correct- there are a lot of mature "kids" on this site (I only use that word to emphasize the age I'm talking about.) and some of them even act more mature that the older members (agewise.)

So I apologize for that statement. I forgot how valuable some of the younger (agewise) members act. But for the most part, my impression of the the younger (agewise) members have been:

"Post in my Rate the User thread so I become popular!!"
"Listen to my Mom Jokes!"
"I don't agree with what you said........So I'll just Flame you!"

Now I don't want to make generalizations, but this is just what I see. But there are still some young gems out there. I'm sorry; that statement earlier wasn't aimed at the young (agewise) members like you.

On the whole, the idea could be nice. Many forums have it (e.g - a star for every hundred posts etc.) but here, with 2 million or so users there would be a burning desire for some to climb all the way to the top of the posting ladder.

It's a very cool idea. But recently I've noticed quite a few people spamming, but doing it within the rules. Like in some threads they'll simply say:

"Yeah."
"No."
"LoL."

In each post they make, just to keep bumping. Even if it keeps the conversation going, it's still............not an in-depth post. And the real spammers will have an absolute field day, as well as the people who are so obsessed with popularity that they feel they just have to have the highest rating so they can brag about it.

*edit* Sorry Hobo, that post wasn't meant for you either, LoL.

Those people need to be dealt with. People will reply with "mmmm bread" for no reason. In my view, it's not needed, but if it were implemented, it could work if we had enough moderators to stop those people from ever posting again.

ICEMAN, alot of appologies there, many of which were not needed. I doubt Hobo took much offense (I did not).
The bumping issue would come into practice so to speak, The bumpers want to elevate themselves above the rest of us "Average" members and in doing this they would force the level of depth in conversation to deteriorate. As you said
Posted By:ICEMAN ASSAS1N
Like in some threads they'll simply say:

"Yeah."
"No."

This is already a slight problem and if more and more people started doing this . . . Well i doubt we could expect a sentance with more than 5 words in it from a minority (but still noticable amount) of members.
All in all, my opinion is that a "User Level System" is probably not the right type of thing for bungie forums.

True. And I know the person you're talking about, LoL.

Yeah, those "spammers" can get annoying sometimes, especially when a Thread dies and you think it's finally gone only to see someone reply "Yeah. I agree."

Now it's back at the top of Page 1. Hooray [/sarcasm]

But more enforcement could take care of that, yes. But the problem with this "rank" system is all about.....pride.

Lets say someone with 4 stars is in an arguement with someone with 1 star. The 4-star member will no doubt not look at him the same as if he were a, say, 5-star member, correct? This will probably be the case with a system like this. And then you have the "active" posters (and by active I mean spammers) who will bully people around because they simply think they can, based on the amount of stars they have.

What I think should go in that space is an online/offline kind of thing. I would think it'd be perfect (but the moderators can't have one, we all know why.)

I also have a few more ideas for what I think should go there as well. But I'd rather discuss the "rank" issue, to see if there's any way to improve it from spammers/elitists.

This is not thought out to much but its worth posting:
How about if we were categorised into where we spent most time forum wise. For instance, I post more here in the septagon than anywhere else, So next to my name there would be a grouping/categorisation indicating thats wheer i spend my time. The forums have their own communities and most people from The septagon know the main posters, the ones to treat respectfully and the spammers/Flamers. It would generate a certain amount of recognition, although it could cause a divide between forums, where say someone from Optimatch came in and posted his opinion, certain people would just say "Get back to optimatch" and the like.
I Guess we can't rely on member respect there but it would atleast give user groups, and make members feel as though they belonged to a certain area.

Yeah, that's along the lines of what I was thinking, DeltahaloUK.

About a couple months ago, I pitched the idea to see what the consensus thought, and the conclusion, as you said, was that people would say "Go back to the Halo 3 Forum and spam there."

However, the problem isn't the website. It's the members (the bad ones). All of these ideas sound so cool on paper, but the fact of the matter is that there are too many "bad eggs" who would jump at the chance to use their "status" as flame fuel.

However, what if we had something more.......less subjective to flame bait? Like under your username you have your "preferred" forums?

Like it would say, for me:

ICEMAN ASSASS1N

Last post: 8/21/2006
Preferred Forums: Septagon, The Flood, New Mombassa, Optimatch
Status: Online

And you can select your "preferred" forums from a box in your profile page, kind of like how we select our "Bungie games played" by clicking on what games we've played and they show up for us to see.

That is probably as advanced as we are going to get without forcing people to be subjected to Flaming due to their "favourate haunts".
Congrats on that Idea ICEMAN.

I do agree with what some stated above.

This idea has already been put forward a few weeks ago. The ultimate reality is the forums would become nothing but spam. Then flamers and spammers would have a high rank while us abiding members would be lower-class. Then it would become another elitism thing. We are trying to get rid of elitism although there will always be something somebody with think they are better then someone else.

The fact of the matter is:The forums would be crap. And what about us moles that find thread uninteresting? That only get realy joy from the forums by helping someone? Our ranks would be low. Dirt low. I don't converse much with the community unless I see someone in need. Someones getting flamed, or I find and interesting topic.

Follow up:Bad idea.

i think since they took away join dates they should have a user leverl which gives you a level based on how active you are, kinda like microsoft has on their forums

Interesting suggestion to improve the forums from someone who uses their sig to brag how many times and why they were blacklisted from this very site.

It's a stage. Everyone goes through it. With time, it will soon be about arrest's and beer's drunk, all on the back of his tailgate.

I would very much prefer to not turn these forums into a text-based RPG with people attempting to increase their "level".

Thanks, but no thanks.

Yeah, people would start posting randomly just to get their "karma" up. Just imagine, every thread looking like this. There's plenty of discussion, but mostly it's "kewls" and "Neat."

Personally I believe that ICEMAN has come up with the best idea so far which more or less rids chance of flaming or bumping. There is no level and it just simply explains that you like any given forum and thats wheer you prefer to hang out. It wont be perfect but around here, what is?

I don't have a problem with that. How hard would it be to implement? How much of Achronos' time would have to be devoted to it? Anything that is done will take away from his time in other areas.
