For the record, i'd piss my self silly if there was an Armatik action figure.

"Lazy -zapp!-, what the hell are you doing playing with me? Get to work lazy ass."

I stole this idea from that guy in the flood typing in all caps.

Anyways, I noticed that in vBulletin, for those who don't know, PHP bulletin software, uses a system where it detects excessive use of question, exclamation, and other symbols, along with excessive use of capitalized letters. I was just wondering if we could use this here with ASP.NET, because everyone knows that ASP.NET > PHP.

Just a suggestion.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

That would be great. It would certainly make reading the Halo forums a lot easier.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

Hmm. That's an interesting idea. But what would constitute excessive use?

From what I see, although it's interesting, I don't think it's actually neccessary. I don't see all that much abuse, but that may be because I usually hang around the Septagon and groups.

The system here already detects multiple spaces so you can't make ASCII art.. but I doubt thats why they did that :p

It shouldn't be too hard, it's quite easy with PHP, but I'm not too sure about .NET, usually it's simpler in .NET than in PHP, maybe if a web developer came in and told us how this would work, or if it is even possible.

Though I think that if they could do it with spaces, excessive/repeating character detection and replacement shouldn't be too complicated.

That's a good and interesting idea...

  • 08.23.2006 8:57 PM PDT

wouldn't work. The php forums don't take nearly the amount of stress that the bungie.net forum does, and it may not be able to keep a continuous watch over every single post input here.

If there were seperate systems set up to deal with localized forums though, it may work, but it would also slow down loading times for everyone. Is it really worth it to do that just so we won't see as much flamming? I don' think so.

VbPlaza...some parts I love, some I hate. That's one of the things I love. Definetly a good idea.

Mate, you should go take a look at Optimatch.

Anyway, I think it would be a good idea, we don't really need it, but nonetheless, a good idea.

Getting rid of ALL CAPS posts that are entirely in ALL CAPS would be nice.

  • 08.24.2006 5:42 AM PDT

There aren't really that many, the most posts I find of those are the usually in the Optimatch forum or the Halo 3 forum. Generally the places where people feel the need to 'shout' out their ideas in order to be heard.

As I said before, it is a good idea, but its not really needed all that much. I could be wrong though.

It honestly hearts my eyes. I'm getting too old for the forums.

That's not true, PHP forums can take quite a bit of stress, it depends on how much power you have. And I think you know full well how much power the Bungie servers have. It's just like the -blam!- filter, it wouldn't slow it down, maybe by .0001 of a second, but that's nothing. Besides, even if it took 2 whole more seconds to keep watch over the posts, the number of servers + the power of each one would shrink that number down a lot.

It's not so much flaming as just a plain annoyance.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I like that idea. It would be a nice change. It would also be interesting to see people try to test just how many alternate typing methods they can get away with before its filtered. It would probably happen in the optimatch of flood forums.

I can program in PHP.

A continous watch over every single post? Every post would have to go through the submit script, so it would have to scan every post for whatever you program it to.

Now, I don't know .NET vs. PHP speeds, but I would think that the .NET ones would be faster since entire pages don't have to be parsed.

It can be inserted really quite simply (I think).

Although it would only effect newer posts, it would be easy.

The way I would do it, is find each item using an array, then using a String.Replace ("????", ""); before it gets sent to the database. It would only run a very small bit slower, since it would already be compiled on the server.

Arrays sound good, they're used quite often in PHP forums.

Now let's get that turtlewalker or whoever to get on this. :)
