Subject: There could be a dark side to the search feature

Yes its true, don;t get me wrong, archanos (sorry if i msipelled that) worked hard on it and it works great, but this could mean, bumping of very very old topics, The actuale search works great and theres no prblem with it,

But as I said, this could mean bumping of much older topics. and large bumps could cause havok on some of the forums.

I am imagining a CPU, disk and DB spike right now as people experiment and try the feature out.

Boom.

Looks like a great system.. So far. :)

You can stil read locked posts, you just can't reply to them.

  • 08.24.2006 11:52 AM PDT

i figured there would be some recent posts with the term battle rifle, but the most recent one was in 2005.

edit: nvm, i figured they would be arranged by date in some way, but they aren't. w/e it still sweet

Way to spread the idea to the retarted! You know, most of those people probably get their ideas to reek havoc from someone else, they're too dumb to actually think for themselves.

No, they are returned by "relevance" (what is listed as "rank" on the results page). We may add an advanced search option to sort by date for some queries, but the default will always be search by relevance.

An advanced search feature by date would be nice.

Now, I don't have to worry about lost threads of mines because members wanting to spam over the thread.

Well the revival of old threads also means the less chance of somebody making a copycat thread just because the old one couldn't be revived. Just think of all the "rate the user above you threads" that no longer need to be copied.

  • 08.24.2006 5:20 PM PDT

So we finally get a long-awaited search feature, and already people are complaining.

But no, I don't think it will be a problem.

Accually, they just need to die.

Many that live deserve to die, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them?

Actually, you can, depending on who you are. Shh.

Complainers serve a good purpose in society. They will make people strive to become better, and in the long run almost always contribute more to their community than those who were too blinded to realize that there are in fact problems.

Food for thought.

Can people not have an opinion anymore? It is a mere opinion. I do agree though, the search feature can mean really good news (right now) and really bad news later. But either way, I thank both Achronos and his team for actually sitting though our complaints and whining about having a search engine.

Please don't take my words out of context. The point of my post was to say that you now only have to deal with one of them instead of countless number of copies.

Accually. I told you my opinion about those threads. They waste time. And there are waaaay too many of them.

If it's bumped it's locked. I don't see that being much of a downside. Hell, that could even be something that's gets you blacklisted. (if you do it more than once that is)

Ok, thanks. I think an option to sort by date would be very useful, but knowing how it works helps.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Convert bumping happens all the time anyway. The search system would just make it easier. If a mod notices, they can do what they always do, warning, ban, and so on. I don't think that will ever get out of control, but its always good to bring up the question.

It's so strange, i've been here for years, and the removal of the member since dates and the added search feature just seems so odd and foreign to me.

Not to fret though, I shall adapt.

As I said... This feature is doomed. People in the Flood are bumping threads from 20-25 days ago. And not only are they bumping threads, they're the stupid pointless threads. "Rate the user above you" just doesn't strike me as important. The moderators need to crack down on the bumped threads and lock them. I miss stosh... Hw locked every thread that was bumped. Even if it was only 20 minutes. I'm sure he'd have a hissy fit after 20 days. To me, this feature is slowly ruining the forum.

  • 08.24.2006 7:09 PM PDT

Skillet was here and referred to himself in the third person.

HOLY CRAP! You don't even have a search feature for a day and already you're complaining about it?!? Just shut up! I don't think it's bad if a thread from twenty days ago is becoming active again, would you rather have ten more of the exact same thread made withing the next three days? I know I sure wouldn't because that would REALLY ruin the forums..as it has for the last several months.

The only thing I can see wrong is that it's in a very inconspicuous place...most of the people in the Halo 3 Forum probably won't notice it and will still create many repeat topics because they never cared to search three threads down on the front page for the same topic in the first place.

It's changing the forums, and that doesn't always mean a bad thing. Sure, the forum is dying, but it's the old forum that's doing it, now we've got something new. I think we should give the changes a chance to begin to take hold, and then we can start predicting the end of the world if we see it fit to do so.
