Who can say? A good guess would be that it's a separate download (and a big one at that), so many people probably can't be bothered to spend the ten or twenty minutes it would take to download on broadband. That, and people like to stick with what they're comfortable with. When people come to Halo CE and get their asses handed to them, they automatically run back to the safe haven of HPC, where there are enough casual players to make even the worst competitive player look good. They make up excuses such as "random leading," "all custom maps suck," etc., etc., ad nauseum. HCE isn't nearly as bad as it used to be in terms of a level playing field. A lot of the better players have... disappeared.

In any case, it has been an utter mystery to us hardcore CE fans as to why the masses haven't flocked to the only promise of furthering Halo on the PC for the next year or two or three or indefinite period of time (if you know what I mean). I encourage anyone reading this to give Halo Custom Edition a try... and stick with it. The new Halo 2 maps (Zanzibar and New Mombasa) may give a significant boost to player numbers when they are released.

The trouble is some people download bad maps and assume the rest will be just as bad. Admittedly the majority (excluding maps like NMC) are clearly made by only 1 inexperienced person and without much love and attention to detail. I'm not trying to bash them but undeniably some maps are more fun than others, and some gamers have little patience. I love the idea of Halo CE, the only issue I have is that I normally find servers which 1) are empty, 2) are full, 3) are laggy coz their hosted by someone with a 56k or a LAN, 4) are not playing the map that I'd like to have a go at. I'm getting bored of NMC because no one seems to want to host any other maps, like autumnslay.

BTW if anyone ever hosts autumnslay please let me know =D I'm desperate to play some other people on it.

God, I lag like crazy on that map, because there's so much detail in it. But it's beautiful and that's most of what matters! :) I too would love to play on it, although it's friggin' huge. Hell, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm up for anything other than NMC.

Heyyo,

Some maps also have basic SinglePlayer Halo AI built into them, like beachassault... it's not a good map, but nice for practicing your snipin for those LAN games (since online you have to aim off the bodies for a good snipe..). And yes, the halo2 CE mod should bring more people to HaloCE, but we need to get those dedicated servers over here too. I see a few on HaloPC that are good but won't turn over to HaloCE...
