OK I don't think anyone has done a guide like this so here we go. Hopefully you guys will use this to come up with some interesting gametypes for the MAW Gatherings. If you have any questions fel free to ask. I still have to do some experimenting to find out the custom starting weapons for all the different maps. I will update the guide once I have this info.

Maps:
Battle Creek - Small map great for everything but Race
Blood Gulch - Ideal for CTF, Assault, Sniper and Race
Boarding Action - Ideal for sniper, CTF can work and KOTH as the "hill" can stretch between the two sides
Chillout - small map, more then 10 players equals chaos and framerate stress
Chiron-TL34 confusing teleporter map great for shotgun slayers and small CTF's
Damnation mid-size irregular map nice for slayer and CTF, oddball can fall into the pit.
Danger Canyon - Large "horseshoe" map with tunnels great for CTF and especially Assault
Death Island - huge island map with Banshees and Scorpions and Ghosts Oh my!
Derelict - Small dark with two levels. Good for KOTH and slayer. CTF is usually short.
Gephyrophobia - Large two level bridge map for CTF's possibly snipers. 4 shees can lead to spawn raping
Hang 'em High - mid-sized open map with catwalks. The "perfect" slayer map CTF can work here too
Ice Fields - Large Icy map good for CTF but not much else
Infinity - HUGE figure eight map that feels empty with less then 12 players. Race is long but fun, CTF can be tedious with camping shees
Longest - Small long double corridor map. ideal for shotgun slayer and small CTF
Prisoner - Crowded multi-level map best for Slayer and Oddball. CTF is OK. 16-player Rockets is ROFLMAO if you keep it short.
Rat Race - mid-sized dark corridors with secret passage and drop holes. Slayer, KOTH, and Oddball work. CTF is unfair because of the flag locations.
Sidewinder - Icy "horseshoe" shape with tunnels ideal for CTF and Assault but snipers work well too.
Timberland - mid to large size woodland map with lots of cover. Good for CTF and sniper matches.
Wizard - Small confined room for Slayer, KOTH and Oddball.

Gametypes:
Slayer - Kill, Kill, Kill
Capture the Flag - We don't have any elbow grease, just this flag here.
King of the Hill - Try to stay on the "hill" longer then anyone else
Oddball - hold the Skull for the most time
Race - Be the first to finish all the laps

Player Options:
Number of lives: Infinate, 1, 3 or 5
Maximum Health: 50%, 100%, 150%, 200%, 300% or 400%
Shields: Yes or No
Respawn time(sec): Instant, 5, 10 or 15
Respawn growth(sec): None, 5, 10 or 15
Oddman Out: Yes or No
Invisible Players: Yes or No
Suicide Penalty(sec): None, 5, 10 or 15

Item Options:
Infinate Grenades: Yes or No
Weapon Sets:
Normal - Whatever they designed the map to have
Pistols - All weapons will be replaced by the pistol.
Rifles - All weapons changed to A/R or Plasma Rifle
Plasma - All weapons shoot plasma When combined with infinate nades this becomes the famous "Plasma Party" This one is hell on framerate.
Sniper - All weapons will be replaced with Sniper and pistol.
No sniping - The pistol and sniper are NOT on the map Elite players HATE this gametype because it removes there "crutch", the pistol.
Rocket Launchers - All weapons replaced with Rockets. Have a blast!
Shotguns - All weapons replaced with the Shotgun
Short Range - All weapons effective at short range. Flamer, Shotgun , A/R, Plasma rifle
Human - All human weapons
Covenant - All Covenant weapon
Classic - Weapons in the original Xbox game No Flamer or Fuel Rod.
Heavy Weapons - Rocket Launchers and Fuel Rods. Can you say noob?
Starting Weapons: Generic or Custom Generic is A/R, Pistol and 2 Nades Custom is whatever the map designer came up with

Vehicle Options: Note: Some maps do not support certain vehicles and they will never appear on them unless you mod the map
Respawn Time: Never, 30sec, 60sec, 90sec, 2min, 3min, 5min
Vehicle Set:
Normal - Whatever the default vehicle are
None - No vehicles at all
Warthog - As many Chaingun Hogs as the map will hold
Ghosts - As many Ghosts as the map will hold
Scorpions - As many Scorpions as the map will hold
Rocket Warthogs - As many Rocket Hogs as the map will hold
Banshees - As many Banshees as the map will hold
Gun Turret - As many Shades as the map will hold
Custom - Here is where you can set the number for each vehicle for each team as long as it doesn't exceed the map maximums.

Indicators:
Objectives: Nav Points, None or Motion Tracker The objective(flag, hill, oddball) will be marked with a nav point, in your motion tracker, or not at all.
Other players on tracker: All(Friends are yellow, enemies are red), Friends(yellow) or none(no tracker)
Friends Indicator: Yes or No A green arrow will appear on your Hud over friends. This should always be on as players with integrated graphics may not be able to discern red from blue.

Team Play:
Friendly Fire: Off(Teammates can't hurt you), On(Teammates can slaughter you), Shields(teammates can drop your shields) or Explosives(teammates nades and rocket fire can kill)
FF Penalty(sec): None, 5, 10, 15 Longer respawn if you kill your teammates.
Auto Team Balance: Yes or No Will prevent players from switching to the side with the greater number of players. New players will be assigned to the team with less players. Nice theory, generally doesn't work.

Gametype sub-options: Note: All gametype have the following options
Teamplay: Yes or No Teams or Free-for-All
Time Limit(min): None, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45

Slayer:
Death Bonus: Yes or No When you die your run faster.
Kill in Order: Yes or No You must kill players in order. Only when you kill your "target" player, will you earn a point and get a new target.
Kill Penalty: Yes or No When get a kill you run slower. When combined with death bonus elite players feel like they are running through molasses
Kills to win: 5, 10, 15, 25, 50 Wish they would have put in 100.

Capture the Flag:
Assault: Yes or No Assault is when you try to take the flag from your base and plant it on the enemies. Very fun but often misunderstood.
Single Flag(min): No, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 or 15 Single flag means that one team is on offense trying to score and the other team is on defense trying to stop them. Single flag works best with Assault.
Flag must reset: Yes or No If No, flag will reset when team walks on it. If yes, Flag will reset after a certain amount of time.
Flag at home to score: Yes or No Your flag must be at home for you to score. Forces you to return the flag to score if the enemy has it.
Captures to win: 1, 3, 5, 10 or 15 One is a little short, 15 is absurd!

King of the Hill:
Moving: Yes or no Moving means the "Hill" will change locations during the map. This is commonly called "crazy king"
Score to win(min): 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 Unless you increase the health of the players, do NOT go over 3min in length in a Free-for-All(game never ends)

Oddball: This gametype has the most varients and can be the most confusing
Trait with Ball: None, Invisible, Improved Damage or Improved Resistence The person holding the "ball" has the selected trait
Trait without Ball None, Invisible, Improved Damage or Improved Resistence Everyone but the ball carrier has the selected trait. Ball carrier may be in deep -blam!-.
Speed with the Ball: Normal, Fast or Slow Person with the ball may be faster or slower then the other players
Ball type: Normal(you have to hold a skull and earn time cannot fire weapons while you are holding it), Juggernaut(make the first kill you become the Juggernaut, kills count for points while you are the Juggernaut, kill the Juggernaut to become the Juggernaut, no ball), or Reverse Tag(player who gets first kill is "it". You earn time when you are "it". Player who kills"it" becomes "it", there is no ball)
Random Start: Yes or No No means the "skull" spawns in the same place on the map. Yes means it spawns at random spots on the map.
Ball Spawn Count: 1 - 16 Number of Balls in the game. What is the point of 16?
Min Points/Time to win(min): 1, 2, 5, 10, 15
