sick and tired of idiots on your team costing you the game??
are you tired of making stupid mistakes???

I'm here to help you as much as possible, going over levels, what path to take, etc...

Blood Gulch

Red Team: Infantry

The caves near the portal are great paths to take into the blue base. OS is great, and the Flamethrower is a good close range weapon, just don't be too close. You can also camp in the caves and defend your portal against blue team campers. Going in the caves near the blue base and camping with a pistol pisses people off, and confuses them, pistol ammo placement is great so you don't run out. Also camping behind blue portal is good, even though people will hate you, cuss you out, threaten to kill you, etc.... Lead your shots, and do 3 round bursts, don't go full auto, the recoil is horrible and you are not accurate. All you need is 3 headshots. If a guy is strafing left, lead a shot, fire, and get a hit, let him go backwards, get a hit, that's 2, and then have him strafe right, and get the 3rd hit to kill him. People waste pistol ammo like nothing trying to get kills which can be easily achieved by going semi auto.

Snipers:
Staying behind and collecting full ammo for the sniper takes forever, but is a good idea. The hills behind the red base has some good hiding spots if you can find them. It is also good to snipe enemy hogs going into the rear of your base, as well as other snipers. Don't poke your body out for a long time, and try one shot kills, don't waste ammo and give away your position. The hill to the left is also good, but you are prone to rockets, the fuel rod right below you, and other people sniping from the hill near the portal. Take extreme caution here. Also to the right there is a lot of darkness to lurk in and snipe, you can take out people using the fuel rod cannon.

Vehicles
This is for both teams. When driving a hog, let the passenger get the flag. The gunner is giving covering/suppression fire, and the passenger should go unnoticed. The driver never gets the flag, the gunner can get the flag if the driver is really good. Stay away from grenade distance and don't drive close to the base, people jump out away from the base, so getting kills would be about 5-10 meters away from the base. Also, stay away from the heavies, the fuel rod cannon and RL are just deadly and confidence killers, just when you think you're safe, you hear the WHOOOOOOOOOOSHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! of a rocket and then you're dead. Also strafe to avoid pistol and sniper fire, never drive in a straight path, and keep away from grenades.

Blue Team

Infantry:
Taking the hill on the right after the portal gives you incredible high ground to pop peeps at red base who are just respawning, is in grenade and fuel rod distance, but has no cover. The caves on the right is good for going against the red base, then picking up the flame thrower and OS in the caves, and sticking to the shadows is great to stay unnoticed. I love it when you get the flag and people don't know you got it, then you take the hog the red team never used and scoring. Taking red territory is also great, even though you get called a camper, it's a legitimate strategy!

Snipers
The triangular hill is an ok spot, I don't recommend it, unless you're really good. Your flanks are really uncovered and there's no hiding spot, you pretty much can get headshotted very easily. The hills behind blue base in the back right corner (facing red base) have a bunch of light, so try sticking in the shadows, and that little cove in the back left corner, you can take out the reds storming the hill to the front left of your base. That cave to the right is also good, take a few shots, and hide, acting like you got killed.

Heavies:
I use heavies for anti-armor, but you can use them to camp and lay down heavy covering fire for people with the flag, you can also cover the portals against people, but you are prone to sniper fire, grenades are a must to take out enemy vehicles.

Hopefully these tactics can give you an idea on how to get flags, and how to survive with the flag. I really hope your teammates have common sense too.

I'm going to add sidewinder tomorrow, I have to shower now and prepare for football in the morning.

The best way to win CTF is to go for the flag and not waste time shooting at people. I see people all the time who mistake CTF for slayer, they make decent distractions.

This is a good way to get the flag then get out and score. It goes more with your warthog suggestion.

All you need to do is get a team of 3 in a warthog (recommended a chain hog). Now drive to the enemy base, be sure to stick closer to the walls of blood gulch to give you a better chance of being undetected until you arrive at the enemy base. Once there you pull of what I like to call the, "Quick drop and stop maneuver." In this maneuver you drive to the front of the enemy base and without stopping you unload your passenger and drive around the back of the base. The passenger just needs to do a quick run through the enemy base and grab the flag then move to the rear exit. While the passenger is taking the flag the driver of the warthog should be driving to the rear exit of the base. Once the driver arrives the driver should end up meeting the passenger with the flag at around the same time they arrive at the rear. Next all you need to do is pick up the passenger and drive away. Again you should stick close to the walls on the drive back to your base and always drive on the oposit side of the map from the enemy teleporter exit.

During this maneuver your gunner should be giving a steady stream of cover and suppression fire. By doing so more attention is drawn to the warthog attacking the base giving the passenger taking the flag a better chance of survival.

DO NOT: Drive the warthog into the rear or front of the base during the pick up or the drop off. This is just stupid, by doing so during a pick up you may end up blocking the passenger inside of the base wasting precious seconds for him to run around and get in. You could also unintentionally kill your passenger who should now have the flag when trying to pick them up. By driving into the front of the base you may be able to give a more direct rout for the passenger to go from but you end up wedging your self into a tight spot meaning you have to make a slow back up out of the base. While backing up you are venerable to just about everything and your gunner is set at and awkward angle and will be more than likely unable to see or doing anything.

I find a great tactic on Timberland is to:
1) Get a ghost.
2) Exit your base area TO THE LEFT OF YOUR BASE.
3) Cross the river at the middle of the map.
4) Come into the enemy base from the LEFT, allowing you to see what you are driving into.
5) Drive your ghost INTO the enemy base. If you are feeling cautious, drive straight through, then go back in.
6) Get out, get the flag, then exit the base area by GOING OVER THE BIG HILL.
7) On route back to your base, DO NOT cross the river again.
8) Score.

that's a good idea.

also for timberland defense, a rocket hog inside the base (as well as sidewinder) prevents people from getting the flag.

Here's a good tip for CTF on Timberland or Sidewinder.

Drive a warthog through one of the lower entrances in the base without hitting the sides and hit E while moving and hit E again to go back into the warthog out the other entrance. It makes for a smooth-as-silk entry and getaway that I've pulled off successfully before.

If you have a hard time trying to understand what I'm saying, synide illustrates how to do it here pretty well.

The quick grab works best with a ghost since it's smaller, and more manueverable. A banshee quick grab is possible only on infinity since the flag is out in the open.

damn this thread is old lol.

On BG to the left of the red base there's a hill you can climb, not the one that goes from red base to blue portal, but another wall that you can back up on and get a good view of your base, most of the time no one sees you

A good all around tip:
Do not try to kill opponents on your way to their base on a flag run as this will simply spawn them back by their base, which is exactly where you are headed.

  • 09.10.2006 6:30 PM PDT

i just kill whoever i can, cover my teammate if he wants the flag, try to get the flag if it comes up as an option, and try to kick as much a** as possible.

winning isn't everything.

EDIT: and warthogs are fun in ctf, too.

Sometimes in Blood Gultch I can just run straight to the enemy base then run back with the flag lol and score. One time i got killed right in front of my base though.

Many of the games I've played have not been with cooperative teams and clans, so this is mainly for just random CTF games.

1 thing is that very rarely will you have 3 people in a hog, so generally the driver gets the flag, as the gunner can protect himself hopefully for long enough. But you have to make sure it is not a game with grenade start. Also, active camo is especially useful, as the main strategy in unorganized games is to just charge at the enemy base. Being unseen for the most part tends to have people forget about you. Also, the flag throws in BG are really great, as they get the flag about 3/4 of the way in about 2 seconds.

I hate it when you finally get 3 in a hog and you get to the enemy base and your passenger just sits there instead of jumping out for the flag.

I'd suggest not trying the quick-grab with a banshee on Infinity, because it attracts stickies like hell - 9 out of 10 times you'd get stickied by respawning defenders. Instead, you should drop the banshee behind the flag area (opposite the shade turret), land ON the flag and jump down to the banshee to take off again. It's much safer for single caps.
