In the cutscene where MC talks to Keyes. On the monitor behind them there is a picture of the ring and the words

Trajectory something: Halo

Can't remember what it said exactly

This is before they even know it's called Halo, because Keyes said he overheard the guards talking and they called the rin Halo. A miss or something else?

I always thought that it was interested that we (humanity) had names for Basis and Threshold (meaning the system had at least been discovered and mapped) but no one "noticed" a large ring in a Lagrange point.

Especially since it was a "blind jump" to an (if memory serves) "unknown system".

I know, Cortana had and used coordinates that she had... but the implication was that this system was unknown to humanity.

huh.... never thought about that.

Isn't it possible that they just made up the names basis and threshold when they found them?

You've got to think crazy, of course, because you only get innovation by refining insanity. - Jason Jones

In the books it talks a little about halsey or cortona finding these coordinates i think, i dont know but i remember reading about ackerson knowing about the halo's. But anyway, what if ackerson knew about those planets and halo's but never told anyone. If someone jumps to an uknown system wouldn't it automatically update everyone elses locations in the computers in the fleet?

I don't think it was a mistake. I strongly believe ONI knew of at least Alpha Halo before the POA made it's blind Jump, and that there was an ONI AI(Beowulf) on the POA.

maybe they named it as they entered, part of some UNSC rule about naming. they picked names out and used them

I name this here fork "Pittsburgh Nellie"; a Welsh whore who could do things with her one good arm that'd make you forget that *thing* on her neck.

This is really fishy, 3 things with names on, and never have been seen, didn't it say that the system was in known space but not in UNCS controlled space? I fail to see how they missed a gigantic ring though

They didn't miss the ring at all. ONI knew it was there.

What hope has this alliance if we cannot conquer doubt of faith
not each other-
If our belief should falter?
But put an ear to the stones of this holy city
Inside there voices echo still:
"Seven rings begin the journey!"

in the book as soon as they reached the planet when they saw the ring cortana automaticly
called it halo

Yeah, there are some points in the book that dont match with the game. I noticed that one right away.

but still, the books came after the game, and as keyes said in Truth and Reconciliation

"While the Covenant had us locked up in here, I overheard the guards talking about this ring world. They call it... "Halo." "

That is the first time they hear it

JADE STONE ROCKS

maybe we lowly fans are on a need to know basis along with the chief!!
in halo CE the monitor 343 guilty spark calls chief a "reclaimer" and speaks english too!!
I didnt really like how the elites went from speaking thier tounge in H.C.E. to speaking english in Halo 2.
And why do the grunts speak english in H.C.E.?
Could it be just for the game?
like a movie is always diferent to the book of it??

But how could the crew miss that the monitor said Halo? And then 3/10 of the game suddenly, "oh, it's called Halo, that makes sence"

If we suppose that the ONI had been there and knew about the ring, why did they call it Halo? The same as the Covenant. I don't think that the Forerunners called them Halo, I only remember GS refeer to them as "rings"

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

Well, the jump may not have been blind.
P.335
Under the Cole Protocal, they would be jumping away from Earth...but it would not be a totally random heading.
Before they jumped Cortana was reviewing the Spartan Mission logs and the rock found on Sigma Octanus IV. She found some symbols that were coordinates and accounted for thousands of years of stellar drift. Then she saw that it complied with the Cole Protocal. A few seconds later they jumped.

For refreshment review pages 335 and 336.

Oh, and Cortana never called the ring Halo until they knew of it, or at least, not in the books.
