Yes, I know there are like ten bajillion threads on character limit, but this one, I hope, is slightly different.

When I write fan fiction (as many of you know I do), I sometimes go over the character limit. Now of course, this problem is easily fixed by creating two posts. However, when I know that I will go over and plan ahead by typing the story in word, I'm not sure exactly where the cut-off point is. So I post the whole thing into the thread and then I get a message that says "Exceed Character Limit". So I just start taking snippets out until it gets within the limit and then I copy and paste whatever I took out into a new post.

Let me tell you, that way is annoying.

What I thought would be an interesting implement is if, instead of stopping us from typing in the post when we've gone over the limit, why not put something that tells you how many words you are going over? So if you were going over 100 characters, it would say, "-100 characters." And then you would have a relative idea. And you could also note where the 0 point is while you're typing so that when you finally finish your post, you will know exactly where to cut and paste.

I know tlhat I would find this extremely useful and I'm sure people that write different stuff like theories and reviews would like it as well.

It's not a huge problem or one that I expect to be addressed immediately (if at all), but it is somethign that has bothered me.

$x='print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x; ';
print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x;

I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

If there was no limit, I could easily see random spammers copying a large passage from somewhere, and then just hitting 'ctrl-v' 'ctrl-v' 'ctrl-v' 'ctrl-v' 'ctrl-v'...

"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

A good idea. I'm sure people who write long fan-fictions or theories they preview in Word would find this very helpful.

Your best bet when typing a very long passage is to use something like Word or OpenOffice Writer and when the piece is done doing a character check.

You can then select around 9000 characters and post them, then the next 9000 and so on and so forth.

I say 9000 because Bungie's 10,000 character limit is very strict, and the ones in Word or Writer sometimes do not count carraige returns as characters like B.net does.

I see no need for the current system to change, just work around it.

Stosh <3's me vicariously... at least someone does...

Since there is no real problem here, just lazyness, I say leave it the way it is.

First of all, I'm lazy. I'd rather not have to go through all the clicking madness of Word. I want to type it all here and only put in Word if I don't have time to finish.

But second, I can't imagine it would be very difficult to implement. I don't know all the technicalities to a website, but making it so we can keep typing over the limit doesn't seem like it would be that difficult. Something like this wouldn't take much time, it would benefit anyone who wants to make a long (hopefully worthile) post, and save time from switching back and forth, copying and pasting, and junk like that.

I'm not saying it's necessary and I understand that this is very small thing compared to...whatever else he's working on, but I think that anything that could improve the site is worth implementing sooner or later.
