Why don't you both download the same benchmark program and run it?

It shouldn't take a whole lot of common sense to realize that 3 Ghz > 2 Ghz. But AMD > Intel.

This is not relevant to Halo, this forum is for HALO PC related matters. try using your brain next time.

Note: I know Recon said in another thread that we should be welcoming to new people yadda yadda yadda. Well, how can we do that if they have nothing intelligent to contribute?

actual there about the same, the AMD can handle big chunks of info like games, while the intel can handle more smaller applications at a time.

correct me if im wrong

Hm, I'm curious. Would it be at all possible to build a comp that runs both?

No, it wouldn't be possible. Intel and AMD use different motherboards and different BIOS settings. Besides, having both Intel and AMD in the same machine wouldn't be of any real advantage. You can have two different video cards (my uncle uses an ATI and an NVidia in his powerhouse).

Clock speed doesn't mean a -blam!- thing unless your comparing two cpu's with the same architecture. I have an amd Athlon 4200+ X2 running at 2.2 ghz, but one core is roughly equal to a Pentum 4 at 4.2 ghz. That's what the model numbers mean.

That would explain why my AMD 3200+ is labelled as a 2.2 Ghz but is clocked as if it were a 3.2 Ghz.

Yup, Lucifuge777 hit it on the head. The architectures done differently, so they're based in their own classes and not rated as a whole. If you wanted to rate it as a whole then my CPU would be rated at 5.2 ghz.

yes, minus the -blam!- haha at the end. I have a 2.2ghz AMD 64 3200+ and it destroys my parents 3.2ghz p4. Both computers have 1 gig of ram and the same vid card, hd, dvd drive, ect.

RIP Halo 2.

And we have a winner.

However, it looks like Intel has taken the throne from AMD as it now has the world's most powerful CPUs, the conroe series.

so how many of you have seen cpus with Pentiums running Halo vs cpus with AMD's running Halo?

Have you seen a difference?

what [if any] problems were there and what chip were you using?

also, has M$ even announced any sort of release date for Vista?

also, do you have to have XP to upgrade to Vista? or will Vista be available seperately...

sorry about all the questions, i'm actually looking to rebuild my PC which has been dead for a while and i'm not too up on what M$ is up to...

To answer your questions in the order in which they are presented:

There really is no discernable different between running an AMD or an Intel for Halo, as CPU speed doesn't factor in as much.

Vista will be realeased commercially in in the 4th quarter of 2006, and for Home PC users in early 07.

Vista is a completely new Operating System. So unless you want to keep XP on ur machine for whatever reasons, you just install Vista like any other OS.

thank obi for the response...

i was actually running an AMD [damn, i can't even remember what kind of model it was, it's been that long!!! lol] with Windows 2000 pro. although the whole system just died and never came back...

:[

i was thinking of rebuilding it, cause i need to run Maya and don't even want to bother with running that on my G5, but i know i gotta pretty much overhaul my PC...

i'm also looking to start playing PC games again [HaloPC included] and was just looking for advice/info on what people were using and what their experiences were...

anyone have any comments on GFX cards?

what do you use? what not to use?

if i'm running Maya and trying to get really nice detail in my renders and don't want to give up an arm or leg for a card, but still have something that will handle Maya and some serious gaming, what would you recommend?

Well, I have an ATI Radeon 9550 256 Mb card. And I love it. NVidia and ATI are so closely mached nowadays that it's really more of personal preference or what slots your motherboard has. If I were you I'd wait and get one of the new DX10 cards that will be out soon. But there's no telling how good one will be over the other.

Hm...well, seeing how hte PC market is nowadays, you'd be best advised to hold off on buying schtuff till later if at all possible. This is my little spiel:

Intel's currently dominating the processor market with the Conroe line, wresting it from AMD's hands. I'm banking on AMD coming out with a conroe-killer sometime that'll be more efficient than its Intel counterpart. If my timing's right, it may appear about the same time when Vista comes along.

Right now, the only DX10 cards on the market are superexpensive offerings from NVidia...when Vista comes out, there should be several more DX10 choices out there.

All in all, I would wait until the market becomes more Vista-oriented (and when the price for all this drops) before building a new rig. Vista is, after all, the new XP.
