Subject: "member" statuses

dude, you pulled a jesus!

No to the special titles, but I do think that the "member" role needs a new name. Something like "Bungie Minion" or something to make things interesting.

Bungie listens to its fans! ^.^ | Ninja .II./ You
RCG: In ur base, steelin' ur flagz. | Watch the demo, then join the carnage!

They just removed the join dates under the avatars as they were a base from which people could claim to be better than others, so I don't think they'll be adding "Active/Veteran Member" titles (or similar) anytime soon.

I agree with you. Instead of that type of status, you should have such as "Offline, "Online", "Busy" and whatnot.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

It would promote Elitism.

A "Veteran Member" would use this to bully around "New Members."

And newer people may feel intimidated when a "Veteran" is in an arguement with them, just because of the lable. And the amount of spammers who would clamour at the opportunity to have a title would be immense.

It's an interesting Idea on paper, but until people can act more respectful to others and grow up, I don't see how it could translate into success.

O.o

Why does everything translate into Elitism? I think people just love to talk about Elitism on this site. What's the point of doing anything if you never get rewarded? Sure, doing things nice for the sake of being nice is good. I do that. But will I'll never try as hard unless there's some sort of reward for me. Call me selfish, I call it human. I just won't. I think it's a good idea. Mabye not the Active Member one, since that will be an open invitation for spammers. But other ones could work.

People only talk about elitism because a handful of members feel like they should be granted some priviledges for being here a long time. This isn't my first account so don't try to play the "I've been here longer than you" card. I'll take your opinion because it's your opinion, not because one of us has been here longer than the other, and I'd hope you'd take my opinion the same way. Nobody is asking you to try hard. If you want to, that's your choice.

I personally like that statuses are non-existent. It makes for a better community where noone puts themselves on pedestals and the like.

I'll put myself on a pedistal whether I have a good rank or not. Want to know how to solve the hypothetical elitism problem? A swift, merciless banning from anyone who uses a "rank" as an excuse. Or an immedite deranking back to square one. People just need to loosen up, in my opinion.

People throw around their join dates like it was an exclusive title. Take it from someone who has been treated differently for joining this April- Elitism exists.

My first night in The Flood was spent joking around, making friends, and having a good time. But then, the "Veterans" came in, and told me I was too new to be "accepted" in that forum. Then my PM box gets spammed with messages like "2006 members ruin this site. It's us veterans who are making this site worthwhile."

And did you know there's a group for the "Veterans"? It's something along the lines of keeping the 2006 members under control, or something.

I like to think that I benefit the community because I can help others, and be helped too. But if a veteran is in a discussion with a "new member" then the arguement is already over because the veteran has been here longer.

Trust me- if people throw their join dates around like it's a badge of pride, a "Veteran" status would be woefully abused.

WE already have status levels didn't you know.
The elite are called Ninjas and they serve for the greater good. The peons are called members and whine for the greater annoyance.

I joined in January when I got my XBL GT.
I only started posting in the forums about 3 months ago.
Nobody has ever given me any -blam!- for being new, because it appears that I have been in the community for almost a year.

Did I say Elitism didn't exist? No. I did say that, to a certain extent, elitism is necessary if you want to keep people interested. I didn't say that the title had to be based on Join dates either. Mabye it can be based on how long you've gone without being blacklisted. Mabye it can be a title awarded to certain people. If people started to abuse it, take it away. I know it won't happen since, no offense intended, Achronos has the same phobia about ranks that everyone else has. I'm sorry that anyone would be such a jerk as to ruin your fun because you're newer, but I really don't see a problem with having ranks. We all went through the phase of being new. There are always going to be people who accept new people and always people who will reject them. I don't think a title will change that.
EDIT: And another post I just saw reminded me of something else I meant to say. I've already made up my mind about people in this thread. For instance, I've seen a few of your posts Iceman, and I have a general idea of what kind of member you are. If you were a Vet I wouldn't take you any more seriously or any less seriously. I'd just assume you probably know how things work around here a bit better then I do :)

Maybe. Maybe not. But I too thought we should have some form of "identity" on here. My idea was like a title that said what particular forum you liked, but in the end, there will always be someone who has to turn that into a "I'm better than you" situation.

I think that us being Members under the eyes of the Forum Ninjas are enough. As stated earlier, this isn't an "RPG" or anything- it's a forum. I personally think a "veteran" status would be useless because we're all just text and avatars.

Conformity? Yeah, more or less. This is pretty much a dictatorship because it's one person who makes the decisions around here (Achronos) and he has his minions doing his dirty work. So we are all viewed the same as........."peasants" if you will. This way, no one thinks that they have more privileges, or are better than anyone else.

Well, I can see what you're getting at, but now that the join dates aren't on the side, I don't think they would change the Member Title, because it kind of defeats the purpose of taking them out in the first place.

It's not identity, it's a reason to stay. If I've accomplished something most people on this forum haven't, I'd like a reward. Am I likely to get one? Nope. I still want one though. It's human nature to want some sort of reward. If we go above and beyond, we all want some sort of recognition. We all want to be "placed on a pedistal". Why shouldn't we be? If we did something exceptional, I see no reason that we shouldn't be placed higher then others.

Like in the vacant area under our "Last post" we can have a "preferred forums" mini-list?

But alas, someone will find a way to make it elitest. Sillies.

Sadly, anyone whose preferred forum is "Halo 3" would be looked down upon by a lot of people.

Me? Eloquent? You must have me mistaken for someone. O.o

I'm just saying, to put it crudely, people need to grow a pair. You're going to be talked down to occasionally, as well as be sucked up to. It's no reason to not try something new though. Everyone seems so paranoid of a bit of class distinction (sp? omgwtf.).

There are a lot of older users that I respect on this site. Pink and Doug included, you have been through so much of Bungie.net and have seen it all.

You were here when Sketch would post. You witnessed Yoozel's ultra-moderatorshipification. Heck, you were here before they could even blacklist people!

You weathered the "Charizard" and all his forms. You put up with Twitch and his spam army. You experienced the "pegboy" incident. And all the while you stuck with this site.

That is what makes you guys veterans. Not some title. It's your experiences with this site that make you who you guys are as community members.

Now I understand that you want some form of reward for all you guys have been through, but can't you consider your memories with this place enough of a reward? Do you guys realize how many times I (Iceman) have seen people make inside jokes and wish to be in on it? But I can't. I joined in April. But I have learned from you guys (and the nifty Search Feature) a lot of this place's history. But reading about something and experiencing something are two very different things.

If there were "Veteran" status, I would feel completely isolated. Like I'm not worthy of a title because I never knew about this site. Then I wouldn't be taken as seriously because I don't have said title. It wouldn't be fair.

I believe that your knowledge of this site, and the quality of your posts is what makes a Bungie.net member who he/she is. Not white text, not fancy avatars, and not titles. We're all equal, and I feel like a part of the community here- even as a mere member.

That is what makes Bunige.net what it is. Now I'm off to bed. Good night all.

If it would be by posts, then would promote the wrong kind of posts. Join dates, and how many posts do not make a difference, you are who you are, and you act according to who you are.

If you want prestige and to be well known, your going to have to do it yourself, in your own way
