This is how the covenant are seen by humans and what we know, so I whipped up a biography for them... I'm trying sooo hard to make one of my topics a sticky!

Grunts:
Enviroment - Grunts seem to live on cold planet which is rich in methane gas, which to them is their atmosphere.
Rank - Basicaly grunts are warriors sent to complete any dangerous task, usually sticking in small groups and with a stonger ally, grunts are happy for there rank, not too dangerous, not too basic. Grunts very much disagree with being moved up to a higher rank. Some grunts even become traders for protecting their own lives. Grunts rank in coloured armour ranging from orange to red to black and (rumored) white armoured grunts.
Characteristics - Around 3 to 5 feet tall with short arms and legs, their skin seems similar to an elephants skin, acceptionaly week but sometimes have good tactics and accuracy. Grunts where armour protecting their upper torso and carry a tank full of methane on their backs which is transfered into a mask on their face for breathing.

Jackles:
Enviroment - I'm not too sure about the home planet of jackles but are similar to grunts.
Rank - Jackles serve as scouts and assassins or sometimes put strait into battle. Jackles are well armoured throughout the body but arms are armourless. Jackles don't have a seriouse rank but try to serve their best in being better, Jackles are well trained and can take on sveral marines at once.
Characteristics - Jackles range from 5 to 8 feet tall and carry a strong energy shield device latched onto their arm to compensate for their physical weakness. Jackles have superior sight, smell and hearing.

Elites:
Enviroment - Not much is known of their home world but seem to interact well with any weather condition, and are known to be OK with oxygen.
Rank - Elites are known as the iron heart of the covenant military with great battlefield tactics following the oath of their leaders... the prophets. Elites vary in many ranks with a brief description of each:

Blue armour - A well trained rank of Elites know to lead groups of grunts and jackles.
Purple armour (not confirmed) - Very similar to blue rank but have slightly different armour desiegn and usaully travel with blue ranks.
Red armour/ Veteran - A high rank, these Elites command some battles and have permission for most things, these Elites are more deadly so watch out.
Black armour/Spec-ops - Superior Elites deserve this rank and are very well trained for commanding any battle, carrying superior fire power these Elites are brutal and will not fall until the job is done.
Golden Elites - Nearly the same rank as spec-ops but less command, the role for these Elites is; to seek and destroy, these Elites have amazing endurance and are usually seen with a plasma sword.
Cloak Elites - Usually a rank for assassins to hunt or silently take out an enemy, nearly the same rank as blue armoured Elites but these guys have more skill

Characteristics - Full body armour with unprotected spots like the chest, neck, and stomach area. Most Elites carry full-body energy shielding which recharges when depleted. Elites stand roughly from 6 to 8 feet tall.

Hunters:
Enviroment - Again not much is known about their home but can seem to handle anything in its way.
Rank - The brute force of the covenant, when things get hot, they're there. Extremely diciplined and are very independant only listening to Elites or other hunters. Hunters usually allways travel in pairs.
Characteristics - Hunters stand to 12 feet tall but when in battle they're hunched to 8 feet tall. Hunters carry full body armour but unprotected in the mid area and carry fuel rod cannons attatched to their armoured right arm with a large metal alloy shield on the other sometimes used for melee attacks.

Brutes:
Enviroment - Not yet confirmed but look like they're good in grass to hard surfaces.
Rank - Another deadly brutal covenant known to follow prophets orders and are disgusted by Elites. Brutes handle tough situations and like the Elites can easily overpower the strength of a human.
Characteristics - Brutes look to be about 7 to 8 feet tall and have very low body armour protecting the torso, hips and head. A brutes strength is extremely powerfull, as mentioned in the books a Brute is stronger than Master Chief even with his MJOLNIR armour on. Brutes also seem to be faster then Elites and are more dangerous. Brutes are said to be a cross with a rino and gorilla.

Prophets:
Enviroment - Again not much is known except they sit in hovering thrones.
Rank: The religious rulers of the covenant military, setting commands to destroy the human race, Prophets are very wise and very powerful, if you disagree their orders you'll be slain (mentioned in the books).
Characteristics - Seem to be a bit over the height of jackles to around 6 feet tall, they wear many robes with a large crown on their heads, seem yellowish purple in colour.

Engineers:
Enviroment - Don't even know if they have a home planet, just that they're with the Covies.
Rank - Engineers build and repare anything they are told to or by their own pleasure. These are no part of the covenant military.
Characteristics - Large, bumpy, floating purple things with tentacles that seperate into thousands of more tentacles for the small tiny jobs, are known harmless with 6 eyes and a grusome looking body, simlilar to the looks of a flood carrier form. As long as these guys get to do work, they're happy.

Hoped you enjoyed.
I'd love to hear some good replies and any requests on more biographies like weapons or vehicles etc.

It is a neat topic. One thing about the grunts is they don't want higher rank because that means more danger. They are not quite willing fighters.

bah

First off, I salute your time and effort.
Secondly, you bumped your post. Don't ever respond to your post just to bump it back up to the top.
Third, we already have a nice section made by Bungie that is aboout the Covenant.
