Some of the problem is that stores are not willing to host LAN parties. Maybe Bungie should call up all the game stores and say: "hey if you've got a guy coming in asking if you could host a LAN and by all means he will organize it, then you better damn well host it. Else no Halo 2 for you."

That's a big problem indeed. I'm still trying to put up a dutch fanfest thing and just a regular xbox LAN party. I'm just having a hard time finding sponsors and i don't want to pay for all the crap myself. Altough there still is one shop i need to check out, maybe i get lucky.

Exactly! We need Bungie to say 'ok we support this' maybe they could get someone to just answer registration forums and send out small prize packs for LAN parties that they support at game shops. And another thing is, some people don't have big houses to have parties at, and it's sometimes hard finding them too. Admint it, most everyone knows where local game shops are.

MSXL: The Last Honest Chapter

I still don't see why people are insisting on hosting the LANs at game stores. I have never once done this. Sure, it would be great if they would help with money issues. I'm sure they would if they knew the parties would be announced by Bungie. Seriously though, people should be able to find other places to hold a LAN. There are lots of community halls, buildings for rent in all the major cities. You could always charge people a small fee for use of the facilities.

But not everyone lives in major cities. And I doubt my state college would want to rent me anything, or a church could put up with all the viloance...

The War will wage forever; though with it's fury comes a peace that you will never know here.

I wasnt insisting, intentionally. I was saying that it's a good idea (sometimes).

Besides, the store in question is NOT a chain, and it's the only place in town that's got the resources we need to have LANs. It's a family owned buisiness, and they arent making much money, but they've got a lot of regulars, like me. Ever since it opened about 29 years ago, it's never charged money. Also, it's kinda hard for us to transport TVs everywhere. We also need a room with enough space to play. Also, some of us dont have the income to rent buildings, and where I live there arent many buildings for rent. I dont live in a giant city like Los Angeles, Chicago, or New York.

Also, none of us have huge houses, either. That's another problem.

MSXL: The Last Honest Chapter

If your local gamestore is willing to host, by all means do it! My idea is, that if Bungie gets directly involved, they could make a site/chapter dedicating to organizing the lans. It would be frequented only by the hosts of the parties, and would be a hub of information and ideas revolving around the LAN party day. If there was proof that it was a Bungie deal, and not only a fan thing, I'm sure that a lot more stores would be willing to help out!

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

My god, when I read your sig, I thought it said MSXL will get IT up. I thought you invented a new type of Viagra or something. Or posted pictures of yourself nude on the site :P (Man, I would not be allowed to say that to anyone else but him... :D)

Now in reference to the chapter idea, that'd be cool. Kind of like the fanfest chapter, just for updates and only open to the hosts of the LAN's. Not someone who is just joining for the sake of joining.

I assure you, I totally didn't have that in mind when I made the sig! ;P Seriously though. I know right now that Sketch isn't accepting any new chapters. But I'm sure he would allow one if we actually got this going. I am going to chat with him about it when he's not busy. I'll let you guys know what he thinks. Or maybe I'll just ask him to check out this thread. =)

There are some great ideas here... Trust me, there's nothing I'd like more than to have a FanFest every weekend in every town across the world. Unfortunately, that's impossible. It's also not that feasible for me to organize and coordinate a lot of events all across the globe on an ongoing basis in light of my other responsibilities here. Live will make things easier, but as you have said, it's just not quite the same and it obviously can't really connect that many people at once.

IMO, the best option is a little of both worlds - an event that is locally coordinated by people who live in the area and can physically take care of business but has Bungie involvement on a higher level for promotion, some prizes and Studio attendance. (and hell, maybe even some financial support)

I totally have plans to make FanFest(s) more accessible by having events AT LEAST on the East and West Coasts with a bonus event here in Seattle. (ironically we've never had a full blown event here in our own backyard yet it would be the easiest and have the biggest Bungie turn out ever) With some dedicated fans driving events in other locales, we will soon have a very broad reach.

The biggest hurdles/challenges with throwing these types of gatherings are:

1. Location - finding a suitable place that can accommodate everyone and has the necessary amenities and is accessible to a large number of people (i.e. convenient)

* This can be overcome with local help (people who know the lay of the land and the local spots) as well as influence/support from Bungie and Microsoft. I can help make it "offiical" and get people to support the plan. (in theory) **** Convenience is key here - Bigger cities, near major airports and freeways make it much more accessible and attendance more likely - so, not everyone will be able to have a full blown fest in their hometown.

2. Cost - Naturally it's not free to rent a huge space, get food, equipment, etc..

* I don't think it's unreasonable to ask people to pay a small cover charge to attend if that money goes directly into the fun that covers food, drinks, space rental, equipment, etc.. Heck, it could even be used to create a prize pool for a tourney as well.

3. Attendance - Getting the word out, hoping people who RSVP will actually show up, managing your max capacity in some kind of fair and friendly way, etc.. Even more of a challenge if an actual tournament is involved. noshows=pain in the ass.

* This is tough... Unless people "pre-register" with some sort of monetary commitment (which is impossible to do with younger, "average fans" who just want to show up) there's always the risk it will flop and there won't be enough money to cover the costs of the event itself. Having it in big(ger) cities, getting the word out on Bungie.net all can help generate buzz and get people through the door

4. Equipment - Xboxes, tvs, routers, cables, controllers, games, projectors, etc... This stuff isn't always easy to come by. I can come up with some essentials, but not enough for a good size party.

* People can bring their own equipment - nearly everyone who shows up will have an Xbox, they just need to bring it and a tv. It basically turns into something like a "bring your own computer" setup like they have at major PC events like the CPL. Security becomes an issue here though - but it can be managed. It's more likely to have this happen than for anyone (including MS) to cough up 50 Xboxes and tvs. Sometimes local businesses will help sponsor by loaning out equipment. Using a venue like a Lanwerx or some other game cafe location makes life easier since they have a lot of equipment onhand ready to go.

5. Staff - The core force behind the event - preparing the information, handling logistics, setting up the agenda, and then running the actual event.

* Plenty of great 7th Column volunteers in any major city... We just need dedicated people who are willing to step up and help make it happen. We can help on this end with web-based stuff (sign ups, information, promotion, etc..) as well just share experience...

6. Content - WHy should people come to the event? What's so special about it?

* This probably isn't a problem. With some Bungie backing, plenty of Halo LAN action, maybe a tourney or two, prizes and potentially some Bungie reps in the house, people should hopefully come....

So, this is totally feasible if people are serious and want to step up and help lead the charge in their cities and towns I'm willing to help where I can. It's not going to happen overnight, but if we commit to putting the effort into it it can definitely be done. Everyone has good ideas and intentions, but it takes time and actual effort to make something like this happen. I know we have people out there who are more than capable.

Woot! This is exciting, I would be thrilled to help out anyone with a solid plan. =)

*cough* Say Pittsburgh Penn. is ok and I'll start scouting locations for a big unoffical East Coast FanFest! I've got a fair sized staff to help me and enough people to provide boxs, all I need is a location and costs so I can figuer everything out on paper and make projected costs.

C'mon, you know you want to sponor! It's even got a huge airport and major free ways run through it and heck it's practially in the middle of the eastern part of the country!

But I agree with everything sketch says!

Awesome! I couldn't agree more! I'm glad you took the time to check out this thread, sketch. I seriously think this is definitly more than a possilbility. I will gladly host an event in my area. I am sure that a Sacramento event would draw quite a few people, being that we are close to San Francisco, San Jose, etc. I will start looking into different locations in my area that would work. My girlfriend will most likely be getting a job at a local Hilton Hotel, which may be of some use... ;) I can't wait!

I am willing to help as much as i can, but unfortunately i'm restricted to dutch stuff.
In fact i'm working right now on a LAN party, heck call it a dutch bungie fanfest if you will. I figured most of the things out already, except for the cost.
If i bungie could give me a hand, i could really get things going, because the biggest problem i have right now is promoting/the buzzzz.

Well you know what'd be really cool? Two FanFests at once, have one going on the East coast and then one on the West coast, and set it up as a tournament. So, who ever wins the top bracket on each coast will get flown to Seattle to compete in the biggest FanFest ever! This would all be played with Halo 1 and eventually leading up to Halo 2, maybe even have the Seattle event timed with the release of Halo 2?

Admit, practically, plans, tournament...

Yoozel, I know someone who needs a spell checker...

Two fanfests is a cool idea, but it still leaves me (up in Canada) a little in the cold (pardon the pun).
