Banshee, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I've noticed this (and I may have commented on it once in a thread) and it has started to annoy me. I mean honestly, the Mods are supposed to be an example...and certainly they are a good one...in most cases. But when new members see a Mod posting in every single Mod thread (literally every one), what do you think they'll do? Try and find some creative, yet utterly lame, way to make the Mods notice them...or they'll just bag creativity and put "Mods" in their title. Either way they get the same effect.

I understand where you are coming from Recon. People deserve an answer. But if that's the case, then why not make a sticky? Then you would definitely have reason to lock any further threads that are obviously just seeking for attention, and the problem would most likely dwindle, if not end entirely.

I apologize for being a bit blunt, but really Mods, it's your fault and you're policy needs to change. I respect you and what you do, but there are threads that deserve more attention than they get because some Mod thread keeps on getting sent to the top...by Mods.

Ah! But, if members don't read stickies (just as they don't use the search engine, both of which are in plain view), then it won't help when it is made. Members who need to read it will ignore it. I'm not pleased with the anti-mod tone that has crept into this thread.

Mods = awesome. Let's not forget that. These guys are doing a lot for us, for almost nothing in return. That doesn't mean there can't be discussion. But let's just keep it civil.

I wouldn't say anything to a Mod unless I thought it would help. But just as normal members need to know when they're doing something wrong, the Mods also need to know when they are contributing to a problem.

  • 08.29.2006 4:37 PM PDT

bah

Let's just add a new forum for moderator talk. That should be good.

  • 08.29.2006 4:51 PM PDT

A) I think the mod-baiting threads are annoying.
B) Mods posting to answer pointless posts in a waste of time.
C) Most things mods say in response to those threads are funny.
D) I like when mods say funny things.

I am truly conflicted. However, my desires could possibly be all fulfilled if mods post something funny and then lock the thread.

This is how we're going to fix this problem:

Take a stroll over to Halo 3 Forum (make sure to grab a flame suit) and look at the "Threads of Interest" sticky. See what's in there? Threads that pertain to popular subjects because we know people will want to talk about them.

Lets do this for the Septagon. We'll have 3 "Threads of Interest." :

Meet the moderators: In this thread, any moderator can provide a short (emphasis on short) Description of them, and what they do. Then we the members can talk about how you become one, with our usual humour and unique theories on HFCS and whatnot.

Critique: In this thread, pitch any and all suggestions for the moderators. Be Polite. This means NO Bashing, just constructive criticism.

Got a problem?: ANY and all problems that you think "I need Moderator help!" for, will be used in here. Even though they are normal people, I guess getting help from a White Text guy tends to have more of an effect on people. Of course, regular members can partake in help too.

Any remaining/future threads on the moderators? Lock on sight and provide an explanation (or link) to these "Threads of Interest." And in the meantime, we don't have to have these 3 Threads stickied. Just have them floating around until someone wants to contribute (like how they do in the Halo 3 Threads of Interest.)

What do you guys think of this idea? Questions? Comments?

Would it help?

That's what the Flood is for. The Septagon is meant to help the community and frankly, reptitive threads that get silly answers don't help the community at all. Now granted, a little fun now and then is great and I am glad to see a good joke here and there...but coming in to a thread and seeing it populated with the above quote and worse just irritates me. (Heck, the only reason I even look at some of those threads is because the Mods always post something in there that is original and witty.)

admit it, you never heard that mod quote before me ;)

Yeah, I know that they are annoying (the threads) but what can we do, besides PM a mod about it, and the nat leats enjoy it while it lasts.

But then again, is it really fair to punish someone for having a question? Personally, I think what should be done is that the threads concerning moderators (i.e. "who is the coolest mod;" "how many PMs do the mods get per day;" "what kind of threads do mods like;" etc.) not be allowed, while threads concerning how moderators are chosen ("how do I become a moderator") be allowed only until the question is answered, at which point it is locked.

Why?

There should just be rules in a sticky saying that if you have a question that only a moderator can answer, you PM it to them...

All other threads be locked including the "how do I become a moderator" ones.

I am personally sick of the "lolz, mod club askz 2 b in u!" crap on this forum. I personally love just pissing about though (I guess I am sort of a troll and I'll try to stop that).

It's just the crappy "bungie jokes" that new users see in a thread (probably posted by a moderator) and then repeat them as if they are now "on the inside". Then they mock new members who don't get the stupid joke that they only just learned.

The "bungie jokes" just seems elitist to me. It's really quite annoying.

Threads like "how many PMs do you get?" and "How do I become a mod?" are full of that crap. It's not just the mods who are to blame but the members too Barren.

IN SOVIET RUSSIA JOKE SPAMS THREADS

Mob Of Angry Peasants Chat

I've seen quite a few of them myself, although I'm not the type that posts in them often.

What irritates me is the fact that a few people who care about the actual personality of the site post a few complaints about how the moderators get googoo kissy ass members who think that we can do no wrong and will defend us at the drop of a hat even when we've screwed up. Rumors to the contrary, we're regular human beings and we -blam!- up.

What I'm not happy about is when they make the complaints about the odd behavior (which adds nothing to the site by the way, trust us, we know what the site would be like if we weren't here, you don't have to tell us) degenerate into flames for the thread starters that simply want the community recognized as a community rather than an Us and Them type of thing.

Last month JAF and BobBQ were regular members and the majority of the ass kissers wouldn't have recognized them from squat, although they certainly should have. This kind of fake behavior is what the threads complain about, and you have no right to trash someone because they think a moderator made a mistake, or is a jerk. If you disagree, fine, but acting a fool because "OMG they sed teh moderator sux!" doesn't make you any better in my eyes.

I respect and value the opinions of many members here who have had recent issues, including Shai Hulud, JAY132 and Banshee Barron, to name only three.

And a word of advice for all of you power seekers out there (you know who you are) Bungie has not once picked a moderator based on our lip to butt proficiency. We're selected from multiple factors, chiefly being contributions to the site and other members. So you might as well stop with the false flattery.

Do I sound like a jerk right now? Probably.
Does it change anything? Nope.

  • 08.29.2006 6:06 PM PDT

banshee, i give you 10 points for insulting me and standing up for your point.

Of course, i have to say that the mod's are seen as higher-than-life people on the forums, and it just isn't true. But if we joke about it, then its meant to be funny. Which is what i did. It was a sarcastic comment, but without the [/sarcasm]. Kind of like the way Stephen Colbert reports.

Still, it is a problem, but one that is normal. So long as the moderators don't think they're all that, i see no problem.

OH HELL NO. The flood is already garbage. We don't need any help from pickle riders.

I wish we could come to an agreement. The mods can have all the posts they want about them in the Septagon. Oh they can even make a condescending comment and say they are going to lock it then leave it open long enough for 5 people to posted "LOL PWNED BY <insert moderator here>". I don't really care. I just ask that I never have to see another one liner or blog again. God how I loved the Stosh rampage.

Oh well I guess I've said too much. I better lay off the forums for a while. I just want to thank the Banshee Barron for an awesome thread. I laughed until it hurt after reading the title alone.

Agreed. The bungie/mod jokes are used a bit too often (actually, a bit is an understatement). However, every now and then they are funny. Of course, some people are going to think that some jokes deserve to stay alive because they find it funny. There are plenty of jokes like that in our normal existence that we hear that are just like that. That the jokes exist and will continue to exist are a fact of life. Frankly, I wouldn't mind as long as they were only said once per two threads asking about how someone becomes a mod...as opposed to 8 or 9.

However, members have questions. It's only fair that they be supplied with an answer before their thread is locked (provided that question has an answer). Would you rather have new members ask how mods are chosen, have their thread deleted, and then complain about not getting an answer, and not getting a warning that their thread would be deleted? Then what? I wouldn't be too surprised if we had people complaining that the mods are being too harsh for locking/deleting threads that are asking questions, and that the mods are not giving other members time to answer, or not answering themselves. It's easier to just let "how do I become a mod" threads live until the question is answered, then lock them, than it is to punish members for asking questions that they won't realize is against the rules for a while (since we all know that a lot of members don't bother reading the stickies, or using the search feature).

That's why.

It would give moderators reason to just lock or delete threads without need for a long explanation. It wouldn't help the members asking questions, and it has the potential to cause additional problems. (See previous post.)

Hows about, say "Threads of Interest" that we can have floating around the Septagon? These threads will be used for all the moderator-related issues. We can have links for these threads in a sticky or something, should anyone want to access them.

Then the moderators won't have to put up with all the "attention."
