Agreed. Alienware is like the Dell of gaming computers. (Hell, they're actually owned by Dell.) Try as they might, the hardcore computer enthusiast doesn't take them seriously.
You could get him to build his own box...if he has enough money to spend on a rig like that, then he can custom-build a fscking GOD BOX. I'm not kidding. If you go build it yourself, with that much money, you can build the ultimate in pwnage. With a capital P.
The only way I would agree with buying a preassembled would be when you want a laptop. In this case, it's still infinitely more cost-effective to purchase instead of build.
However, if your mind is set on buying preassembled, I would certainly hold off. There are virtually no cards on the market today that offer DX10 technology, and that's going to be essential for next-gen games. That, and Windows Vista, though nearing completion, is not out on the market yet. Don't ever trust the Vista Capable stickers computer manufacturers like to slap on their new models. They translate into you running, at the very least, the most basic, dumbed down version of Vista...no eye candy or whatnot. Wait at least unitl DX10 cards become more mainstream, or until Vista is actually released before going preassembled.
