Since I know everyone loves to argue about this topic, I figured I'd post this article I found this evening.

http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/08/29/vista_prices_revealed

Vista Business, which is comparable to today's Windows XP Professional, lacks multimedia features of Premium, but integrates features such as the IIS web server, a remote desktop, P2P capability and support for up to 128 GB of memory. This version apparently will carry a suggested retail price of $200 for the upgrade and $300 for the full version. XP Pro currently sells for $160 as upgrade and $250 for the full version.

Don't start whining about this yet, because these are retail prices. I can find XP Professional the full version for around $138. Although I know the price won't be cut as much in the beginning, the price will be coming down soon enough.

Is it possable to upgrade your Windows 3.1 to Windows Vista? Or your Mac?

I will treat this as a sincere question.

I'm not totally positive but I don't think that you can go straight from 3.1 to vista. Most of the hardware that is 3.1 compatible isnt strong enough to run vista. Besides, it would be more beneficial just to get a new system with vista than to attempt to upgrade a windows 3.1 system.

As for the Macintosh... Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure the current version of bootcamp doesn't work well with Vista, although I'm sure once Vista comes out they will have an update for bootcamp that will allow it to run Vista. I'm not sure how well it will run though.

And for the other guy, $160 isn't too bad for an operating system. It's only 60 dollars more than the wholesale price of OSX Tiger and around the same price as XP Professional wholesale. I unfortunately will be getting Vista Ultimate so I will have to save up a little longer. I'm hoping 2GB ram will be able to hold me over for a while, although I bet I will end of having to buy two more 1GB sticks to make Vista run as flawlessly as my copy of XP does.

Not unless your Mac has the Intel chipset. As for 3.1, i have no idea.

2 Gigs should be able to hold you for awhile. I have the beta and I usualy run below 1 gig. Although I have had vista running for 3 and a half days, have Tool *part of the Halo Editing Kit* running a full quality radiosity to 0.1 *which i started radiosity right after i started the computer, that 3 1/2 days ago* and its down to 0.103682 *tool has to load the full level plus keep the lightmap that it is building in memory*, and the total ammount of used memory is up to just under 2 gigs *out of 6 gigs, 3 of which are virtual ram* so your 2 gigs should be very much fine, as long as you arent doing a large arsed map.

BTW, i hope you were jsut kidding when you said upgrade 3.1, if you got 3.1 running on one of todays computers, kudos to you and install a fresh copy of vista over the thing. there is a 99.9999999999999999999999999999999//9999999999999999999999999 999 chance that it wont work upgrading 3.1 to vista **the // is ment to cut out an infinate ammount of 9s**

It was. I just wondered if you had to install a newer version first. As for the Mac part, I heard that some fancier Macs could run Windows.

Upgrade Path: 3.1 -> '95 -> ('98 - if applicable) -> Me/2000 (if '98 than XP) -> XP(if 2000 than Vista) -> Vista

Now APPARENTLY all versions of Vista ship on every DVD. Its just the matter of the Activation and CD key that keeps your version at your version.

Nice find!!!

Old news, but it still is usefull info though... Somebody should add Vista pricing to a H2V FAQ so that all the Vista pricing questions are avoided...

I don't think any version of Vista will be around $300.

If you want something expencive, get the PS3 when it comes out, the expencive version of it. With games that may reach to $100, youre looking at a lousy invesiment seeing that when you have a nice collection of games, you will have spent nearly $1000 for a freaking entertainment system that cant be upgraded like a computer can. And to top it off, in 4-6 years, there will either be a new PS comming out, or there will be no more PS because there is no want or demand for the outrageously prices things

News artical about the price.

If it doesn't come directly from Microsoft, I'm not going to trust the prices quoted. I've been cruising the Microsoft site and there is no mention of prices for Vista.

As of a few months ago the boot campers were having problems getting the vista beta to work.

If you click on the different versions you will get a brief description of the version, along with a price.

Home premium will have everything we need. The Ultimate version combines the business function and the Home functions. So since most of us have XP it should just be a $160 upgrade.

The problem with the upgrade versions are that they dont allow you to do a clean reinstall if you ever need to, so I'll be stuck with a full copy :-p

That makes no sense. If true, hackers will have a feild day figuring out how to hack the codes. You buy the cheapest version, then download the activation and cd key for Ultimate.
