Doom 3 will look better on a 6800 coz nVidia worked with id to make it.
Half Life 2 will look better on X800 coz ATi worked with valve to make it.

Make your choice based on that. The X800 is more powerful (FACT).

Personally, I made a reslution from my last ATI card never to buy another ATI card again. To much compatablity issues. I relize now that ATI cards dont have this problem anymore but ATI's reputation has been perminantly stained in my book. I'd go for the Nvidia. Besides, the best model benches better than the best ATI at the moment. Plus, the xbox has an nvidia card :)

Also, if a game is worked on using a cirtain card, it dosent make the game look any better for the most part. It usually garentee's that all the graphical features will work properly. And even if you dont have the card made by company x (ati\nivida) the game was made on, this chances that the game will look just as good all depends on the features on the vid card.

Actaully no the best benchmarker is for the PCI express version of the X800 T.

But then again benchmarkers are subject to bribery, not to mention inaccuracy. Bascially they're both excellent cards neither will disappoint. The GT version of the 6800 is not the best though, it's the budget version. 6800 Ultra is the best. Therefore X800 is better than 6800GT

It also verries from game to game; source to source; other chips, mobo's. Like you said, bechmarks are riddled with variations and inaccuricays. There great cards, simmilar pirce. Go for the company you prefer more (at this point).

I woul get a x800 only because 6800GT sucks. If it was 6800 Ultra then I would say NVIDIA.

How does the GT suck? In benchmarks, the GT is only a few frames (1-5, avg) behind the Ultra. For slightly lower clock speeds and $100 less than the Ultra, you get the most bang for your buck - the GT is easily overclocked to Ultra speeds. It has awesome stock cooling, and even better for YOU if you have a VGA cooler. Also, the Ultra is a huge power hog. 300 w doesn't even do it. GT doesn't have that problem.

GT is the better buy than the standard 6800, for sure... most people won't buy the 6800 Ultra, unless you're rich... or hardcore.

Which x800? x800(standard) pales in comparison to the GT, but you didn't clarify if it was the x800 Pro, x800 XT, or x800 XT PE.

I'm a recent ATI owner myself - 9800 Pro 128MB. Love it, and I like ATI better than NVIDIA... but I can't overlook the 6800 series.

Just don't base your purchase on two games - Doom 3 or Half-Life 2 - all around, rather, instead.

GT is like only 400 or a little lower and I can play all my games at 1600x1200 with no problems at all. Doom 3, looks nice. Halo PC, cool. And many more too. X800pro is a good card too, but from the reviews I read, the Geforce 6800GT is pretty much my card for now.

Heyyo,

I suggest the ATI card, I've had probs with nvidia in the past (g4mx, and 5600... they were not worth the money). Just get the original ATI cards, not 3rd party ones like Sapphire (which I mistakenly bought :p) cause they're not too good. Here's my fav place for benchmarks: Tom's hardware. They do a heckova lot of vid cards on the same system setup. Very nice. :)

BTW, if you're playing Doom3 on a ATI card? you can easily boost your frames up by at least 5f/s with 2 little shader tweaks. The current ones they're using are optimized for nividia I guess... you can find the tweak here: http://www.megagames.com

They're called the "Doom3: enhance the experience" or something along those lines. Do both part 1 and 2 for full optimization. ;)

I think with that shader tweak ATI gets the advantage...

Oh, and btw if you diddn't know already, Nvidia and MS got inna big argument for the xbox, and due to this, xbox2 will be powerd by ATI. :D
