Does anyone have any tips for improving one's aim? I have terrible aim, and I need to improve. Leading is something I need to practice as well. And no one should suggest aimbots, because I suck with those too.

I've been around these parts for almost eight years now...wow! Maybe I should be concerned about that...

Aimbots suck, period. And to improve aim, make sure to remember; how fast is the bullet, how fast is the target, and where will the person I'm aiming at be when the bullet reaches him? Always calculate it, as if two cars are approaching at a right angle to each other, and you need to decide when to release the second car so that it will hit the first. Timing is everything, I suppose. Always guess where the opponent is going to be next, and fire there. The golden flair around hteir body after you shoot indicates that their shield are down, meaning you're doing well and should keep shooting.

lead your shots are the most important 3 words in halo.

even if it's a sniper rifle you must lead your shot, depending on the ping too.

I think the vast majority of "pr0" halo players play the game with 5 sensitivity, pretty much, know your lead and never fire if you don't tihnk it is going to be a hit.

watch some good videos, some say they help

I would start a blood gulch game on your machine and practice shooting a rock or tree. Practice moving constantly and shooting from different distances. Then go on-line and find a Blood Gulch or Hang em high game with a few players and start to practice leading live targets. Turn your volumn up so you can hear the beep of a sucessful hit. Notice how much you have to lead in order to get a hit. Adjust your mouse sensitivity so that it is easy to keep steady but not too slow that you can't turn quickly and deal with a new threat. Practice! Practice! Practice!

yes, what igg says helps, also try learning how fast certain guns travel, like rockets and how far you can throw nades.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

Wait until your target moves, then shoot where he/she is moving to. Sounds silly, but trust me...

Shoot slowly, you are much more accurate that way. Halo is designed to reward SLOW deliberate shooting. When you pop off 10 shots in 5 seconds, you won't hit anything. Make each shot count. Two body shots, then a head shot.

also listen for the ping sound.
Start with sooting just ahead of them and then getting further away until you start getting lots of them. you may have to die a few times berfore finding the sweet spot.
For example on a good connection for mee using an SR at full zoom against a gunner on a moving hog requires 2-3 inches of lead.

Apoc, sthu. He probably just tested the aimbot out, it's not like he uses it everytime he plays.

Also, playing Campaign on Legendary with your sensitivity set to 8 won't help you at multiplayer much, since you don't need to lead your projectile to compensate for latency, since you're playing by yourself. Campaign is a good way to get a feel for Halo, to learn all the controls and such, but taking down five grunts with an assault rifle is much different than trying to take down a human opponent with an assault rifle.

EDIT: Oh, and I know you already hate me, Apoc, but I've used an aimbot before, and I still have it on my hard drive, even though I never use it anymore. :P

Yeah, the aimbots suck, I don't see how people use them.
Thanks for all the advice, I found that I'm leading my shots too far. I overcompensate for the latency, so now I'm going to practice adjusting it more and being dynamic with it.

well as long as you didnt get 1 kill in multiplayer with it you are partially redeemed. but having the aimbot at all makes me think lower of you.

Welcome to my signature, apparently I can't respond right now so please don't leave me a message, because I will not get back back to you after the beep.

And you can always try hidding somewere with the sniper and find still targets (typing or afk) the move befor you kill them thus teaching you how to ajust your aim on a live taget, and if s/he starts moving then become a still sniper until you get the hang of it, that, if you understand me, is how I lerned to aim. Hate scopes though

I can't use aimbots. I have my reputation to protect! What would people think I suddenly got skills and started pwning people? I would loose my title as "The Worst Halo PC Player Of All Time"! (thats the nicer title)

To improve aiming skill: Get HMT and swap all bipeds the level Guilty Spark (I don't remember the name, I think thats it. The level where the Flood is introduced) with Elites. Then turn up the mouse sensitivity and play through it on Legendary for two hours.

At the start of the match, throw a grenade. Realize the time between the hand animation and the actual grenade appearing and being thrown. Alternatively, walk on hard surface, and suddenly stop. The little bit of footstep-sound you hear is the game delay.

Using things like this, as well as other indicators like the time it takes the game to register you getting in a vehicle, you can see how much lag there will need to be. Pistols and snipers are the hardest, so I'll just give advice on those. Pistols, generally, if you have a 150-300 ping game(which is normal for me at least) make the outside of the recticle be on the person's head.(ie the person is running to your left, the right of your recticle should be adjacent to the left of his head.) But make sure you calculate for distance as well.

Sniping is hard, and the only advice I can give, is trace a person's trajectory for a while, then fast forward to where he will be in the time it took for the grenade to appear at the start of the game/other indicators. Never fire off more than one shot if you miss, as those'll most likely miss with the target alerted, and give away your position.

Also, frequently check your ping, and in time you'll be able to compensate accordingly.

Hope that helps some.

Also there's a custom edition level that allows you to practice sniping/precision shots with various weapons, even setting the AIs' sizes, speed, or even warping around to mimic lag[/custom edition ad]

I'd have to disagree here: most decent Halo player can see you even from a good distance and return fire, it's better to loose off all four rounds of sniper ammo (unless on BG, in which case conserve your ammo) and have a higher hit rate per time.

One good method is if you see someone running perpendicular to you, strafe in the same direction and fire some pistol shots leading further each time. When you do hit (indicated by the beep), stop moving the mouse, and keep firing. Since the MC strafe speed is the same as his forward speed, if the opponent keeps moving in a straight line you will hit with almost every shot.

This method also shows how much you need to lead to hit, as well.
Once you know how much you need to lead (usually about .5 to 2 cm depending on connection) I suggest using the sniper rifle like the pistol, firing off whenever you see a good target (again, only on non-blood gulch maps where sniper ammo is prevalant).

I'd like to quote a phrase from one of the oldest military treatise in existence. The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

"Never write off your defeats. Always learn from your mistakes. Failure is the mother of success."

Basically what is being said is that everytime you get killed in the game, think about how you died, what you were doing, and possible ways to improve.

Go to a sniper server or a clan server where you know almost everyone there is going to be better than you. You learn quicker by dieing at the hands of a skilled player than by living and pwning unskilled players. Watch the skilled players, how they move, when they take thier shots and when they back off.

When I come across someone who is more skilled then me I don't think "Oh -blam!- I'm boned" I think: "Oh boy! Practice!"

I'd just like to point out that this won't work if the skill level difference is too high. Ideally you want to find a server that has noobs, people slightly worse, people slightly better and a couple of experts.

Don't go to a really really good server, otherwise getting 3sk'd every 5 seconds isn't a fun way to learn. Start of on large public servers, and work onto getting to fight bigger and better people...

Excellent advice guys. All I can really say is, practice as much as you can. Using a sniper rifle on Halo pc is not something you are going to pick up right away. It takes time.

Understand your framerates and how they relate to your ping. I think this is something many overlook. I play best at around 60-90 fps and about 100 ping. When these two vary from each other, you have to adjust accordingly.

Dpi settings on your mouse speed are important as well. Some people say faster is better, others like it slower. Both are null and void. It depends on a persons reaction times and how fluid their movement is.

Peace.

also *as stated earlier* don't do the stupid thing where you set your mouse sensitivity way high and wander around legendary. That does not help anyone. Use a mouse sensitivity that feels good to you, and as you get better, adjust likewise. I have a sensitivity of 6 and i probably wont go higher. making it too sensitive will make you over shoot and get dizzy.

try the maw server if it isnt too full *or go in and have a ball with 15 other players, insanity can kill*. Make sure you get out of servers with tkers in it, they don't help anything and all they do is get you pissed off.

Actually, I did something that improved my aim quite a bit.

I used the -useff in my command line, set the rendering mode to Vsync, and with about 60 or so FPS, my accuracy jumped. I hit about 80% of my sniper shots, and won a few games. It was definitely nice, and I don't mind the crappy graphics, in fact, it gives the game more of a "spaceage" feeling.

Hmm..interesting. I have noticed that bad graphics is easier to locate enemies as well as not have to worry about explosions, but have never noticed it to improve accuracy.

Also, before when I said conserve your ammo, I was thinking more in a bigger battle situation, since that's where I am usually, providing cover fire or helping allies, where if more than one shot is fired, more enemies will see the trace and find you. But if it's more of a one on one situation, go for it. Or if they're really unexperienced, wait for them to run straight at you, giving you easy shots.
