The Start of the Heresy

Fanfic by: Flood Controller

Foreword
As Vergan walked up the steps of the Prophets inter-sanctum he wondered why they had summoned him. He was a spec-ops elite with a lot of prestige; he led a squad of elites and grunts that have served him well. The door flashed as the honor guards let him pass. There sitting on their thrones were the three prophets, Regret, Mercy and Truth. He bowed as he approached them. “You’re Majesties!” He stated “Rise.” Commanded Mercy “Elite…do you know why you have been summoned here?” Questioned Truth “No, your highness, I do not.” Vergan Replied “You have been selected as one of the few to become an honor guard.” Stated Truth “Your loyalty has proven well and your determination in the battle against the humans has exceeded our expectations, yet there is still one more test.” “Whatever you ask of my O Prophets, it will be done.” Vergan humbly pronounced “Your Final test to prove that you have utmost loyalty in us, you will be sent to the great ring of halo leading your squad. You will be sent into the library to rescue the oracle, we have heard from our spies that he has come into contact with one of the humans...the demon.” Regret explained “We have lost contact with the spies and we fear the worst.” Vergan flexed, his body was engulfed in anger. “The oracle will be rescued, I swear this to you.” Mercy nodded “Now go and retrieve what is holy and revered by us.”

Chapter 1 The Truth

As the drop-ship flew low over the terrain of Halo, Vergan briefed his troops on what was about to commence. “The demon was last located in the swamps surrounding the rings sacred library. We are to enter into this library with our shadow generators on so that the parasite will not sense us. Only when we have surrounded the Demon will we disable our shadow generators. We will lock the doors only myself and two elites will approach the demon, at that time we will attem-what the!” The systems started to beep and chime rapidly, the pilot came on the com-link, “Objective has changed sergeant, the Demon has been detected inside the sacred ring’s control room, he is with the oracle!”
Vergan cursed and told his troops about the change of objective. “The plan will still be the same and remember do not disable your shadow generators until we have the demon surrounded!”
* * * *
“Go on, insert the index.” Whistled 343 Guilty Spark as he hovered over the Master Chief. He was about to put in the index when a huge boom came from the Control Panel. “What the heck do you think you doing!!?” Screamed Cortana from the panel “Do you know what that thing does!” Master Chief looked up “Cortana, it’s a weapon that can help us destroy the flood!” “Yes, it will destroy the flood and all other sentient life in the galaxy!” Cortana Exclaimed “If we do not destroy the flood it will spread to every other planet in the galaxy, and cause galaxy wide destruction, the same effect as it will if we activate this ring!” Argued 343 Guilty Spark “Shut up, Tea kettle!” Shouted Cortana as she blasted Guilty Spark back with a blast of energy “No one does the oracle harm!” Barked Vergan, the Master Chief whirled around with his gun in his hand and realized that he was surrounded by covenant. “Give us the Oracle.” Demanded Vergan as he stepped up to the Master Chief “Oracle? What is that?” Master Chief questioned
“The oracle is that thing.” Cortana Stated as she pointed to 343 Guilty Spark “If you want to have this, then you’ll have to go through me!” Master Chief warned “If you must…” Vergan said as he flashed his energy sword on and lunged at the Master Chief.
The Chief strafed and bashed the elite’s skull with his Assault Rifle. The elite fell, but quickly recovered as he tripped the Chief with his foot. Now he was standing over the Chief, “Petty demon, you are no match for the Covenant.” Vergan Boasted “I doubt that.” The Master Chief said as he somersaulted back, stood and grabbed Vergan in his throat and sword-hand in one single movement. “Why do you need this oracle?” Interrogated Master Chief “My hierarchs commanded me to rescue the oracle from your filthy clutches.” Choked Vergan “Once the oracle is safe my lords will evoke the great journey and the sacred rings will cleanse this galaxy from all unworthy people like you, scum!” Warned Vergan through gasping breaths “What is he talking about Cortana!?” Asked the Master Chief “This great journey that these covenant speak of is the same thing as activating the ring, you fool elite! Your hierarchs are wrong!” Cortana retorted “Once the ring is activated all sentient life will be destroyed, everything your commanding officers tell you are lies! If you activate this ring, everything will be destroyed!”
Anger fully enveloped Vergan “How dare you speak those lies!” “Troops, grab the oracle and leave, I will deal with this demon!” Elite under Vergan’s command grabbed the oracle and departed with the rest of the troops. “Let me go! Put me down!” Shrieked 343 Guilty Spark as he was in the arms of the elite. Vergan broke from the Master Chief’s grip. He was facing the Chief “How dare you tell those lies!” Roared Vergan, fury building up in his stomach “What Cortana said was true, your masters have been the ones spreading the lies.” The Chief stated, Vergan lunged once more, but this time the Chief was late in side-stepping the elite and Vergan chopped his gun in half. All of a sudden the room was filled with humming and both warriors looked up and saw that sentinels had filled the room. “The Holy Warriors of the ring!” Exclaimed Vergan “Deal with this foe, I will go and make sure the oracle is safe.” Yet, as Vergan enabled his cloaking device and left the Master Chief to battle against this new menace, knew that the Oracle was safe, he trusted his men. The only thing he did not trust now was the truth about halo.

Here's the next chapter

Chapter Two –The Seven Sacred Rings
Vergan was now an honor guard, the ceremony that had made it official was the day before. He and his squad-mates were praised at their victory over the demon with their rescue of the oracle. They were overjoyed at his promotion, yet they both knew that they would miss working beside him and he them. He was stationed outside the prophet’s door to their inter-sanctum. A position he was confused by, for he knew that most honor guards would give their arm for such a post. He guessed it was because of the great victory and that he had fought with the demon hand to hand. Though he knew that that was not the only thing that made his mind swarm with confusion, it was what the demon spoke to him before he left the control room. The prophets were lying to him…they couldn’t have…but if they were…no! They did not lie!.... He tensed his muscles as a fresh onslaught of questions racked his brain. He did not know what to do, was it just a mind game that the demon was trying to deploy? Should he ask the oracle? The oracle was inside of the prophet’s prayer chamber being questioned by his hierarchs. He couldn’t get permission to go inside, would he sneak in? He would have to, it could be done but if he got caught it would mean the end of his life. He still had his shadow generator at his quarters a souvenir his squad-mates wanted him to have for remembrance of their brotherhood. He could use it when his day shift was over and the guards would change for the night. He decided he had to, but why…he guessed it was calling him, the answer. He guessed that if he did not get the answer the question and fear would eat him up on the inside. He did not know why entirely, he only had the fear. The fear that what the demon said was true, that his whole life had been one huge lie. His training had conditioned him to abolish his fears and to go to any length to destroy the enemy. His fear was the lie, it was also his enemy and he had to go to any length to destroy that lie by questioning the oracle. He waited what seemed hours with growing anticipation for his shift to end. He was a master strategist and he planned his scheme well. He would wait till the lights of High Charity had dimmed and only the night watch, were roaming the streets. Then he would don his shadow generator and proceed stealthily to the prophet’s inter-sanctum. Once he got to the inter-sanctum he would have to slip past the guards without them see or hear the door open, he searched his room for something that he could use…that was it, he could use a hologram. He had a few holograms laying around, they were already recorded. He could set one off in the inter-sanctum, the guards would get suspicious and check it out, then he could slip through the door without notice. Which ones to bring though, he decided that he should bring two just in case, if a night guard sensed him he could set another one off. Holograms were sometimes left around and they would go on at random times. Their owners could set the time when they would go off, just like one of those human…alarm clocks? He wondered He decided which ones to use, he would set off one of a grunt singing, that was one of his comical ones. His squad-mate grunt gave it to him for the ceremony. All the grunts got a kick out of it, but the elites didn’t laugh much. They just thought it was annoying. The next one he chose would be another comical one, it was when his elite friend disabled the generator on one of his grunt teammates plasma pistol. The grunt starts to charge the pistol, but it back fires in his face, knocking out the grunt. That was one of his favorites, he also got that at his ceremony from his elite squad-mate, the same one that rigged the pistol.
It was soon getting dark, and he strapped the shadow generator to his waist, he put the holograms in his belt and departed. He stepped out of his quarters and noticed how quiet it was, he could hear every individual footstep he made. He would have to be as silent as the night was. That wasn’t what he was afraid of though, he had been trained to be quiet. The guards did not sense him, he knew they wouldn’t, but he had his holograms ready for use anyway. He quietly walked up to the inter-sanctum, getting past the honor guards would be the most trying part of this journey. When he was about 100 ft from the guards at the door he placed the hologram down, he set it to go off in 3 minutes that would give him time to get ready to slip in the door. When he got in position, he waited his muscles were tense and his breath was coming and going in quiet wisps. When the three minutes were up, the hologram flicked on and the room filled with the grunt screeching a song. Both honor guards jumped at the noise. “Ahhh! Blasted holograms!”
Said one of the guards “Let’s go check it out.” Replied the other “It was probably left here by one of those janitor grunts.” “He probably set it to wake up and clean the mess hall.” “Yes, you’re probably right.” Agreed the other guard as they walked up to check out the scene. Neither of them noticed the door open, they didn’t even look up.

When Vergan had successfully entered the prayer chamber he breathed a sigh of relief and disabled his shadow generator. Then he approached the Oracle, he was tense and he felt his heart beating quickly as if he had fought a great battle. He was about to discover the truth. The real truth. The oracle saw him approach and introduced himself “Hello, I am 343 Guilty Spark, monitor of installations.” He chimed “Hello, oracle.” Vergan replied
“Do you remember me? I rescued you from the demon.” “O yes, I remember now, although I am not sure why you call the reclaimer a demon.” Guilty Spark beeped
“Never mind that, do you remember what he said?” “About the sacred ring destroying everything, even the most holy?” Vergan questioned “O yes, halo is a weapon of universal strength, the reclaimers built it as a last resort against the flood.” 343 informed “When it is invoked, Halo will destroy every sentient being in its’ path.”
The prophets…what have they done!?!

I think its pretty good. Although it deviates from the story in the game and it should stay the same. But besides that well done.

Watch out, here comes the next chapter..

Chapter Three – Realization
I need to get off of High Charity! Thought Vergan as he recovered from hearing the news about the Halos. He decided he needed to commandeer a ship from High Charity and leave. Leave for where? He did not know, he couldn’t go to the ring. No, the ring was too dangerous. The flood was there and plus after the covenant heard that he stole a ship he would be a wanted elite. Then he would have to set up a camp at Basis. He decided that his first task should be to re-record the hologram of the knocked out grunt with the oracle’s information about the Halos. Then he would need a force to help him capture the ship, he decided his old squad would do. They would trust him….he hoped. He decided he needed to get off this place and now! He would have to go and meet with his squad right away. Yet, how was he going to get past the guards that were now outside the door?! His original plan was for the oracle to start to screech like something was wrong with his hard-ware. Yet, if the Prophets found out that the rings actually do kill everyone then they might regard it as a heresy and eliminate it. He had to take the oracle with him. That would be the bad part. He didn’t know how. Then the idea dawned on him.

He could still have the oracle screech like a mad-machine as in his original plan, then he would hide behind the door and ambush the elites when they came in. It was a solid plan and Vergan decided it would work. “Oracle, start to screech as if your processor is malfunctioning!” Commanded the Elite The Oracle questioned him “Why, I don’t understa-” “Just do it! And now!” Hissed Vengar as he deployed his shadow generator

“If you must…” Replied Guilty Spark as he started to scream, beep and screech madly
The Guards stirred behind the door “What now!” Said one of guards “Rrrg, lets go see what’s wrong.” Answered the other, Perfect! Thought Vergan as he stood poised against the wall as the door hummed and opened up to 343 Guilty Spark’s screaming.

Then there was a swift movement as Vergan struck with the speed of shadows and he left two bodies laying limp on the ground. “Sorry, my brothers.” Regretted Vergan as he stood over the incapacitated elites. Then he walked over to the Guilt Spark, disabled his restraining device and grabbed the oracle. “Hey! Where are we going?” Rang the Oracle, Vergan snapped at him “Keep quiet and don’t move, we need to get out of this place and we need to leave now!” But the Oracle inquired further “You must be wrong! My sensors tell me we are in no danger?!” Vergan lost his temper “What did I tell you about talking! Your sensors are the thing that’s wrong! We are going to be killed if we don’t get out of here!” The oracle went silent as Vergan turned and went out the door. He had to get to his squad-mates and fast. In a way he didn’t even need to use his shadow generator because the oracle could be seen in clear view. He would have to do his best to avoid the night guards.

He was running down a hallway when a watch guard came into view, he quickly dodged it as he ducked behind a pillar. When he was confident that the guard had passed he ran forward once again. He kept dodging between pillars until he was outside the barracks. He was behind a group of machinery when he noticed that there was a guard stationed outside of the barracks. He quickly formed a plan in his head.

The guard was staring bleakly at the dull scene that lay before him, some old machinery to his right and rows of supply boxes to his left. Nothing moved or stirred until a blue light came out of no where. He knew what that thing was, it was the oracle.
“Hello, can you please tell me where the maintenance room is?” The Oracle chimed “I am in dire need of a new radiation system, because I--” The guard’s last image was of Guilty Spark floating above his head before he heard a dull thunk and he was enveloped in darkness.

After going to his all of old squad-mates quarter’s and assembling them and they went outside. Where 343 Guilty Spark was waiting. The Covenant all gasped when they saw him. “O, hello my name is 343 Guilty Spark, Monito of installations.” He said as the oracle introduced himself, An elite gasped “Vergan?! What have you done!” Vergan began to explain “No my brothers, it is not what I have done, it is what the Prophets have done and are continuing to do.” “They are lying to us about Halo.” The group was confused “What do you mean? The Prophets could not lie t-” Spoke out another elite, but Vergan silenced him with a wave of his hand “Oracle, explain to them about the truth of the halo’s.” “Answer to them the question that I asked to you about.” The Oracle agreed to tell them “No, the theory that you have is false, Halo is not a purging source that relinquishes all of the unholy. Rather it is a weapon of last resort against the parasite and will destroy the galaxy of all sentient life when triggered.”

The group looked devastated. “So this is the truth.” Mumbled one elite, then he looked up with a vengeful glare and clenched his fist “The Prophets have lied, then they will pay!” They all looked up with a betrayed and hating glint in their eyes.
The squad then bowed low to Vergan, he was their leader now. The leader of the Heretics.

Not bad, I like the tie in with H2 and Burial Mounds. Grammar, still a problem, but what more can be expected of the youngwhippersnappers writing things these days. Joking, of course, but proofread.

Chapter four – Breaking Free
Vergan smiled in satisfaction as he received a message that his boarding party was in position. He and two other elites of his squad were the cockpit of the drop ship Prophet’s Servant. They were all camouflaged in their shadow generators. Vergan’s squad was split into three groups. One group in the security terminal, another in the Communications room and the one he was leading in the cockpit.

Vergan watched the two guards patrolling the inside of the room. He clicked his mandibles together as a sign to his men and watched as the two snuck up behind the guards and knock them out.

The guards didn’t even know what hit them.

Vergan turned on his com link and spoke other two groups “Capture the other guards and lock them in the crew’s quarters.” He turned off his com link and addressed the elites standing before him.

After the squad had pledged their allegiance to Vergan, they released the oracle. They trusted that the oracle could sneak out of High Charity’s air space without being detected. He said that he would return to Halo, for that was were he belonged.

When they had snuck aboard the dropship they had activated their cloaking device and prepared to hijack the ship. Vergan split the squad into three groups and they had carried out their duties.

He now looked at the elites that were facing them. They had hate in their eyes, hate and confusion. Vergan spoke “Elites, I want you to get this ship up and running, I want you to also get the coordinates for the planet of Basis, we will be setting up camp there until we can get a foot-hold on the covenant.” They obeyed saying “Master, if it is your will it will be done.”

Vergan smiled “Good my soldiers, good.” “I will be in my chambers resting, if you wish to contact me do so by com link.” He then walked out of the room. He knew that he didn’t need to worry about the security of High Charity shooting down the dropship, his crew had been through worse. They were the best of the best, and they were about to make history.

wow. that was great. anyway, i really like your "alternate universe" Its much better, but i don't think it was a good idea to let the oracle go.

Yeah, but the oracle would have hindered the process of them sneaking onboard the ship. It would have made it to risky with him not having a cloaking device.
