Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

While I disagree with your view on Bungie's reasons for B.net, I think I'll save that discussion for another time, since the point here is the filter.
Other sites don't have as much traffic as Bungie.net. The resources needed to use a similar system here would be greater than what other sites need.
Having said that, I think it is still a feasible idea. If you set it up to only have, say, three levels of filters, you wouldn't have to store nearly as much information as a custom filter. Now, I'm not sure about what would be required so that each member could set his or her preference, and then have it screened for them. I don't really know much about that.
But it doesn't matter, at least to me. I think the filter is fine the way it is. Some specific words could be argued to be removed from the list, but I don't think a completly new system is necessary, or even a great idea, really. Like Recon said, it would promote the idea that swearing is acceptable on the forums.
While you say that the novelty will wear off, I really don't agree with that. Many members would continue to swear unnecessarily, and the constant influx of new members would mean that even if the novelty did wear off for individual members, there would be a constant supply of new members who would take advantage of it. (Keep in mind, I'm not saying all new members are immature; just using the law of averages.... or something like that)
I view these forums as if I am in public. No matter what language I may use in private, it isn't appropriate here.
Wait the system is fine now because words are blacked out...but installing a different system would encourage pple to swear more?...How?...Why?...and what would it matter?...if you had didnt want to see the language you could just set your filter accordingly...this age of "Political Correctness" has lead to widespread daftness...what you think is approriate is your own personal ideal..not a universal one...hence the idea for a filter..
I didn't say that removing the filter would encourage people to swear. I said that without a filter, people would not be discouraged to swear. There is a difference. With a filter in place, members know that swearing is not allowed on the forums. However, if you implemented an option to remove the filter, that would tell members that is it perfectly fine to swear. After all, the filter allows it.
In different environments, different things are considered acceptable. In my personal opinion, Bungie.net is not the proper environment for "adult" language.
