Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

I see your tech answer and raise you this....Other sites have done it and are doing it

Other sites have fewer members, less traffic, and a different forum system altogether. One feasible thing at another site is unfeasible at a different site.

This is the sort of Deus Ex Machina answer to things...just cause it works over there it doesnt mean it can work here...when you go to buy a car you might look and see 2 models from 2 different companies and they are almost exactly alike...the difference is usually in the fringe benefits..leather interior or something...they are similiar because they are goin after the same auidence so they have to compete and provide the things that auidence wants...the companies survey the auidence for what they want...now im not saying Bungie is competing with other forums...theyre not...theyre advertising..but if enough users said "Hey we want blogs" BUngie may listen if they saw a dropoff in the traffic on their forums...suddenly its not impossible to implement blogs!...shocking!...my point is Id like to see blogs and crap like that here..but i also know its not bound to happen as Bungie sees no need to add that to keep pple around...I stated the samething above concerning the language filter...its something that could easily be added but most likely wont for finicial reasons..not logistical ones...

While I disagree with your view on Bungie's reasons for B.net, I think I'll save that discussion for another time, since the point here is the filter.

Other sites don't have as much traffic as Bungie.net. The resources needed to use a similar system here would be greater than what other sites need.

Having said that, I think it is still a feasible idea. If you set it up to only have, say, three levels of filters, you wouldn't have to store nearly as much information as a custom filter. Now, I'm not sure about what would be required so that each member could set his or her preference, and then have it screened for them. I don't really know much about that.

But it doesn't matter, at least to me. I think the filter is fine the way it is. Some specific words could be argued to be removed from the list, but I don't think a completly new system is necessary, or even a great idea, really. Like Recon said, it would promote the idea that swearing is acceptable on the forums.

While you say that the novelty will wear off, I really don't agree with that. Many members would continue to swear unnecessarily, and the constant influx of new members would mean that even if the novelty did wear off for individual members, there would be a constant supply of new members who would take advantage of it. (Keep in mind, I'm not saying all new members are immature; just using the law of averages.... or something like that)

I view these forums as if I am in public. No matter what language I may use in private, it isn't appropriate here.

Yeah, like -blam!- or -blam!- or -blam!- or -blam!- or -blam!- or -blam!-. Seriously I think that -blam!- shouldn't be -blam!-ed and neither should -blam!-.

But that's just me.

Seriously speaking, just get over it man, come on. This video game was meant for people over the age of 18, I think that you can handle it. Besides, if a moderator sees it being used excessively, there's also this thing called a ban that does way cool stuff.

ZOMG SWAT!!!

Anywho as you said Halo is meant for mature gamers. Besides that would take from some guy named Dick...

But it's also a name. I think that could be unfair.. If a filter is too strict, people have fits about them not being able to say something.

I'm a Dick, they should not ban my name. It's not humane!

Er, let me rephrase that.

My name is Dick, they shouldn't ban my name just because it also means a male body part! They shouldn't condemn all Dicks to such a fate. They were called Dick by their parents, and they can't help that they're Dicks. It's who they are, why penalize someone because something that is completely out of the Dick's control?

...

Er, let me rephrase that...

Laughing my freakin' ass off.

I don't think it should be censored, it isn't really that offensive.

I don't think the word "dick" should be censored. The word is a very common name, at least in the U.S.A. It would be like saying "bloody" should be censored too, but it could be used to describe your victim in a sniping match. =)

Wait the system is fine now because words are blacked out...but installing a different system would encourage pple to swear more?...How?...Why?...and what would it matter?...if you had didnt want to see the language you could just set your filter accordingly...this age of "Political Correctness" has lead to widespread daftness...what you think is approriate is your own personal ideal..not a universal one...hence the idea for a filter..

I didn't say that removing the filter would encourage people to swear. I said that without a filter, people would not be discouraged to swear. There is a difference. With a filter in place, members know that swearing is not allowed on the forums. However, if you implemented an option to remove the filter, that would tell members that is it perfectly fine to swear. After all, the filter allows it.

In different environments, different things are considered acceptable. In my personal opinion, Bungie.net is not the proper environment for "adult" language.

The rating of the games and the forums are not the same. personally, I'm convinced that at least half of the people here isn't older than 18. Anyway, I'd say keep the main forums filtered, this is Bungie's site, and if they don't want swearing, than I see no reason to have an optional filter. With groups however, I think it's a nice option for the founder to have the ability to turn the filter on or off. Your group, your rules, or something like that.

As for the word dick, I see absolutely no reason for that to be filtered out, for reasons already stated.

Ok...what part of filter option dont you get?...You log on..select what level of language you want and its blocked accordingly..do you think that slight option to adjust the level is going to cause pple to just let loose a string of blam's?...Its likes suggesting that alllowing pple to buy cutting material will cause them to possibly kill each other...and Bungie.net makes mature rated games...the majority of pple who play these games should be 18 and over..this isnt a site for Seasame Street...

I understand that the swearing will be blocked. However, I think that allowing swearing is a bad idea. No, it won't suddenly unleash a wave of swearing. But over time, people will become accustomed to swearing on these forums. So they will do it more often, because they won't even think about it.

No, that analogy isn't correct. It would be like saying that if you allow people to buy cutting material, they will buy cutting material. (By cutting material, I assume you mean a knife or sword, ect.?) If you allow people to swear, they will swear.

Please, don't bring the ratings of games that Bungie makes into the argument. First of all, not all games they have made are rated Mature. Second, it is irrelevant. This is not a video game, this is an online community. One should not affect the other.

Its an online community about a game which rated mature in which your fire weapons and blow -blam!- up...its not a an online community devoteds to bringing peace to the Middle East...as for the swearing thing youre assessment is proved everyday in the real world where the general public is free to curse whenever they want...I live in NY of all places and i dont walk down the street hearing a litany of curses...have some understanding of the society youre a part of..

As I said, they do not only make Halo. Their previous games have had lower ratings.

Of course you don't hear a litany of curses as you walk down the street. People typically do not use that sort of language in public as much as they do in private. Which is why I don't feel that allowing swearing here would be appropriate. Although many people would abide be some sort of code for when it is acceptable to swear, many others would not.

So maybe you're thinking again that the members will have the option to keep the filter in place. While most members wouldn't mind the occasional swearing, they would probably not like posts that are filled with it, as will inevitably happen. So they could just leave the filter on. But if that is the case, why change it in the first place?

It'd cause the same problem I have with the governing body of WW2 era Germany: The inability to use it in discussion. All I want to do is talk about Rommel and the Africa Korps and I get a dozen -blams!-.

I hate this filter all together, personally.

You know what would be nice?...a selectable filter for each user to decide what level of language they can and cannot see...If you set it to adult then you can view and use all language..minus some obvious derogatory remarks but youd have to enter your birth date and crap...or you could lower the level and have more stuff banned...this always everyone to enjoy the site the way they want...

While an interesting idea, it could/would be a horrendous amount of overhead on the system.

Each user account's database entry would need to have a field that had their custom "kill dictionary" and every time they refreshed or loaded any page, the contents of the entire page would need to be run (host-side) through their personal filter. So instead of one dictionary that has to be loaded into memory and filter the site through, we would have multiples versions, or even user customized ones...

Maybe one day we can have profanity filtering implemented on the client side by default, rather than through the host. Perhaps in a new version of IE?
I suggested to one of their team members that they put in a built in spell checking system into Internet Explorer 7. They replied to me saying they were giving serious thought to it.

I am also currently having a discussion with The Disembodied Soul about some errors Bungie.Net is giving me.

I like to help. I see a profanity filter as unecessary. Though I am not offended by profane language, we live in a politically correct society that doesn't allow cursing.
