Are any of you Admin is a lot of groups, and do you ever go on powertrips. Like Locking, blacklisting and threats to blacklist and what not?

Before I started to leave groups, I was either Admin or High Mod in 14 of 19 of the groups I was in. I started to feel too powerful and Felt like wanting to raise through the ranks again. Oh how fun that is. But anways, what I want to know is, Do any of you feel that? Do you fel like starting new in a group and raising through the ranks again?

And to the Mods of the public forums, do you ever wish that you could go back to being a regular member and just make pretty pointless posts in The flood or where ever? Rather than having to enforce the rules all the time.

That's a terrible way to run a group. Sheesh.

  • 09.08.2006 3:43 PM PDT

Mm, i see what you mean, i was leader of two groups over 1000 members, and a smaller one at one point. It's about not letting it go to your head. It's not about how good you think you are, if people genuinely respect you, thats a good thing and something power status can't take away, or give.

No no, But thats the thing, as an Admin that position automatically means you get respect from all members. What I'm asking is do you ever want to start from the beginning and do it all over again and earn everones respect.

Personally I believe that earning respect is better that just getting it automatically. You feel better because you know people give you genuine respect, not a false-faced liking to you.

I have gone on small powertrips before, nothing major, but I would lock more things than normal, which I would normally just go with and have fun if you want to know. Yes I do my best at letting the power go to my head, except for that one time on my little power trip I've been fine.

You think it got what it takes to be..?.

God forbid you send me one of those I was checking for cool gamers and saw you messages too, I will scream to the top of my lungs and smash this damn screen/BlackBerry to pieces! You've been warned -_-

I was an ultra in each groups but uhhh. I left those groups. Half the reason why some groups (I'm not going to point any fingers) are what they are today is because of my visit. I cared more about the community.

Ok, i've never felt like doing it agian.

But listen. Admin position is nothing, it means
A) You hit the create group button
B) You are on good terms with the person that did
C) You were really active and gained there respect, then moved on to your next project.

Im sorry, but thats the way it is most times.

As for earning respect, it isn't done for being active, hell thats a rubbish reason. Look, i have nothing to do all day, like me (not directed at you, but in general terms again)

Genuine repect shouldn't be earned like that, you should do something. Or, people can respect you if they really like you. I know you are told to repect authority, but seriously, don't take what your given, question it.

You may think, well what's he done? Well, i won't say, cause im not egotistical and wanting recognition, it seems to follow me in a sence.

Then again, lets look at this from a completly different angle.

It's a group on a website. It will never matter in the end, you will never meet these people. Just think about that, wouldn't our time be better spent doing stuff with friends, doing work, bettering ourselves for the real world?

I've started new in groups and done just what you were talking about, but I rose through the ranks as a result of my attempt to be a good member in the group. I never actually just stopped and started all over in another group for the sake of what seems like taking on a challenge. Never crossed my mind either. But frankly, I don't think it's really a problem, so long as you aren't destroying the groups that you leave.

I have been a mod or admin in many groups. And at times I just don't want to be. I have left positions of power in many groups.

  • 09.08.2006 4:17 PM PDT

what is this, the military? what bonus is there in being 'ranked' higher? none.

All it does is give higher responsibilities to those who receive them. Those people who go into groups to get high ranks are just idiots who have no lives and nothing better to do so they can tell their loser friends how they managed to get into an unsecure group and take over. Very impressive.

Power trips are for real life situations. This is an online message board, essentially. The only person with any real power here is Achronos and anyone he allows full power to. And having power on any singular website is like having power over your room. It doesn't go any farther than that.

Don't worry. I'll fix that... err... you said 'your' rather that 'you're' in you post above.

Always here to help.

You say that respect follows you goldhawk. It does for me also, but this is a website, and you can't ever see the person, so how else are you going to get respect? You have to earn it.

I don't know...when you think about how much people get into the idea of being a member of both Bungie.net and the groups, people can hold power over another person. Moderators may be normal members, but they still have power over a specific group of people. People also say you can't make real friends over the internet because there is no physical contact that friends would make in real life. Are they right? Power trips (and the sense of respect and power that the thread creator is talking about) seem insignificant in one sense, but in another sense he is feeling the same "rush" that other people get when they go on power trips in real life.

Respect isn't about ranks.

For example, i have only come across mabian a couple of times to speak to him, but i respect his opinion.

I have several people i talk to regularly that i have never met. And between us all is a mutual respect, and friendships. I mean, i'll take this.

Manimum Fear
Verbiage
Tipster

I am on 1st name terms with these people (and many others) we talk almost every day over msn. We get on great, talk about real issues, aswell as things like girlfriends etc. But, there is an underlying respect between us. That respect was probably originating from online games we had played together before, but the thing is. Then, they would respect me cause they "had too" because of the highest rank i was VOTED into.

Now, that time is over, we still respect each others opinions, views and thoughts. Not because they have to (as rankings do) because they want to.

See what i mean, im trying to show the difference, tell me if that wasn't clear enough.

It was so long ago that I really can't remember what it was like.

Nup, I actually never felt like that. Whatever I did in my Groups I did to make it a better chapter.

I did this before I was a mod anyway.

And to TGP- What, have no scruples?

And to stay on topic- No I may like high positions, but I don't join new groups just to get them.

Ach! Was ist los?

In Soviet Russia, power trips YOU!

Ahem.

I don't think I've ever wanted to rise through the ranks and gain power just for the heck of it. I doubt I'd be a ninja today if I did.
