I have a theory:

In the front you see the MJOLNIR Mark V, then the new armor, and then you see the MJOLNIR Mark VI.

Now I think that the Spartan in the Mark V is either Kelly, the 3 spartans that were too far away to help at Reach, or maybe even a spartan that was badly injured not long before Reach fell and had to use their old Mark V. Because none of them were on any of those 3 stations. Unlike Linda, John, Will, and Fred. Now to the new suit. I think that it could very well be just a spacesuit for civilians...or a certain passanger who happened to "borrow" Govener Jile's ship. hint hint

Also, everyone stop compliaing. For instance if you havent read the books and dont think it's fair to have a whole update on it...well, buck up and go read for once.

Well, for now it's supposedly "non-Spartan armor", as it was vaguely said.

So some Forerunner thing is awakened by Halo 04's destruction, and "has plans of its own". Whatever could this mean? Forerunner sentience? Something that's self-aware? Another superweapon? If so and it is hostile, then that'll be the day the "Forerunner as an enemy" speculators get theirs...

the weird armour might be a toned down version for normal soldiers to wear and maybe hasley is wearing it, as the one in the weird armour seems to be leading them cuz its in front

the weird guns look like the AR and the BR without a scope, which i suppose it is...

maybe the forerunner thingy on onyx is the ark?highly unlikely, i know
or maybe its a forerunner colony, or a flood containment facility, or some forerunner tech

The gun though looks like an AR if you could pop off the ammo counter.
This picture is most definetly worth a thousand words.
also, maybe thats fred kelly and linda?
since Fred would be squad leader, he might not need better but more expensive armor. the one in the back could be kelly cause, it less bulky and easier looking to move around in, and shes the fastest. a sniper like linda might need more room to see, so she would get a wider visor, and maybe some active camo.

Check out all my theories and creations at HBO!

Or read my fanfic, "Effort Cannot Conquer Faith" -- it won a signed novel from Eric Nylund!

That back matter better not be final. I thought everybody knew about the Spartans.

That doesn't really make sense, and yes, we do know about the other Spartans and their whereabouts, not in detail though. Thats what this book will be for.

No, I mean that in the Halo universe, the general public was supposed to know about the Spartan program. Master Chief was on camera at the beginning of Cairo Station!

Great update Frankie!!

The cover art is what really grabed my attention. Specifically the "non-spartan". I think he can be one of two things.

The most likely possibility is that it is one of the 'Spartan III's' being trained by a battle hardened Spartan II on Onyx (Frankie said he was non spartan so they may be called something else, or he may just be refering to the fact that it is not the mk-V or VI we are used to seeing).

The second and less likely possibility is that he is Forerunner or at least a marine wearing Forerunner armour. Could this be one of the Level 12 combat skins that Guilty Spark was refering to? Possible but not likely. If it is then I can see how GS mistook the MC for one.

What I do know for certain is that the book and Halo 3 are going to rock!!!

You think it's just for looks? I'd wear it if it wasn't just for looks. I don't think Spartans have much time to worry about how the armor looks, but rather how it performs in action. That is a strange looking visor, though. It made me think of the pfhor. That most certainly would be an upgrade, no? It doesn't make much sense to produce a unique piece of expensive armor just to protect some grunts. You would think it would be easier and cheaper to mass produce the og mjolnir look (helmet). And it doesn't, that I know of, require any head/face surgery to wear it.

Spartans may not have the time to worry about the looks, but I, as a gamer, do.

I haven't read any further and I can already see where you're going with this! :p We care about our looks. I agree. I like the new armor, just because it's different. I am slightly horny for this new novel.

This is what I think:

The Spartan in the front looks like mix between Mark V and VI armour, the one it the back looks like a complete Mark VI armour, and the one in the middle looks ugly.......It looks bulkier and older, so maybe a Spartan 1 in a Mark III/IV suit.
But it still looks ugly =D
The rest looks uber cool though, cant wait to read it!

This upcoming novel sounds like it's going to be a great and beneficail (not to the general population, only to halo enthusiets) addition to the series we all know and love.

I'd also say the Spartan soldiers look like a the Master Chief in Halo Combat Evolved with Halo 2 gloves.

True. And am I the only one thinking the weapons dont really look like BR's??? The one in the back is clearly holding an AR, no doubt about it. But the ones in the front seem to be holding something like a BR. But it doesn't look like BR's. They are too short etc, not really like the long, sleek BR. More like a shortened AR with the top of a BR.
And the middle Spartan, maybe it is Kelly in a Forerunner suit or some other suit Halsey had developed. Or maybe it is just a Forerunner. Also, the "reawakened" force seems more like the Flood to me than the Forerunner itself.

No you don't. You only think you do.

The Halo 2 updates were full of the word CENSORED. Back then, people regularly made jokes about how nothing was actually being said because of the amount of deliberate and heavy handed censoring in each update.

The update is not a privelege. We don't have to tell you a damn thing. If you don't like it, don't read it, and spare yourself (and us) the whining.

This was my first post in almost a year on the bungie site... and I can see Some people never change... Good to see you shiska, but at least with the CENSORED we were getting a little more insight into the game....

IDK, it just is really starting to feel stale to me.

and who ever said anything about it being a privelege?

Halo's a hell of a drug.

So they give out spankings at Bungie, how kinky is that? I bet Frankie is bad all the time. Naughty little boy.

Send me out with a bang...

ZOMG! Frankie you sneaky little devil! This update was... was... incredible! This novel screams of Spartan III program... or Spartan Is. I think the three different types of armor look great. Hopefully selectable in multi-player! ;) (Edit) lol he does clearly say it's non-spartan armor! Whoops... still cool non the less.

Anyways I'm not hoping for any crossovers from book to game (cough brutes cough) but, one can hope! This book from the word go sounded pretty much like EXACTLY what I wanted to hear.

I can't wait for the floodgate of movie news to fail and we are swept away by it's awesomeness.

I don't post all the time... but this update just demanded I do so.

Thanks for these updates Bungie/Frankie. Some of us realize you don't have to say a damn thing.

A lime a day keeps teh scurvy at bay.

there seems to be some discrepancies... in the first game, marines call out mark V when sighting you, but in the books, the MC has mark IV armour at that time. in fact, none of the spartans gets a full mark V upgrade, they all just get pieces. mark IV armour was the first of that series to have shielding tech, iirc. still leaves us open to debate on the other guy.
