they alos had things they DIDNT have in the games...

hover crafts, for both sides, new marines, new Covenant, oh yeah...they used the MAIN things...but where in the hell did Bungie get HALO from...oh...wait...ive already ANSWERED THAT!!!!!!!

adding things still did not change the fact that they used Bungie's Ideas, charecters, vehicles, and whatnot in the mod. Plain and simple. The MAIN things that they used violated the IP.

I believe that this thread should be locked before it becomes a bonfire.

Hmm, what if the name of the mod was changed to a generic Sci-Fi name, and all the units renamed. Like UNSC Marines changed to Infantry, Gold Elite changed to Hunter Killer, and so on. Since all the models, textures and sounds are custom made, would Microsoft be able to sue them?

oh so now your saying that they wre fine the way they were?
that they SHOULD have kept the names Bungie gave them?

He did not say that, he said that if they had changed the names but kept the same models, then it would have looked like they were trying to evade the law. Same thing goes back to my map examples...

No matter what you call something, it does not change what that object is. In this case it was a group of people making a RTS of halo without Bungie's/MS's permission to use their IP.

I just wish Microsoft had at least contacted them earlier then when they were already three years into the project and about to release a beta.

After all, not only has Halogen been around a while, it got a lot of coverage when it was first announced and I'm pretty sure they contacted Bungie.

Which raises another question: Isn't Halo Bungie's property, or am I mistaken?

Peraoanlly i think Bunige should get in touhc with the HaloGen team. They could produce this game on its own platform instead of a Mod for C&C. Though there are downsides to making Halo an RTS game. It looks really good, but will it be good. Like gameplay and such. I have played Star Craft (Best RTS game ever.) and i'm not sure if Halo is a RTS game. Look at Blizzard trying to make Star Craft: Ghost. I have seen the beta video for this, looked at screen shots and persoanlly i think it looks really bad.

What i'm getting at is that Halo may not be a conversionable game from a First Person Shooter game to a Real Time Staratogey. Bungie could also release HaloGen as a Download off Halo2 Vista when like they did with Halo CE.

I agree with Microsoft making HaloGen team start. They were taking a multi-million doller franchise and calling it there own. Really they should have got a contract with Bungie, or a letter of allowence befor they started production.

It's a bummer they had to stop. Though from what i have read in this thread and on there website they should have asked befor they did this.

didnt starcraft steal names from movies?
...
exactly.

The diffrence is that they did not steal the plot or charecters from the movie.

i know...it was a weird way to end it
well hopefully they have the courgage to ask MS for some rights just to make that game

For the second and last time, it's not a game, it's a modification for C&C Generals.

Master Tard 100, you better quit talking about the C&C mod, before Master Kim erupts. You know what, just to be safe, I think I'm gonna get out of here before lava starts flowing down to my head.

But before I go, I got one question: What does it mean to be "FOX'd"? I figured since this is the title of this thread, I wouldn't be going off subject by asking this. Now please excuse me while I escape the oncoming Master Kim lava. xP

If someone embarks on a mod that is based on someone else's creation and does not have the permission of the holder of the IP they are using.... well, I am sorry to say (because this work did look interesting) but they are at risk of this happening.

Posted by: Master Kim
First of all, it's not a retail game, Mr. Ignoramus. It's a mod for Command and Conquer Generals, not a game you go into stores and buy. Secondly, you probably don't even have C&C Generals, do you?

You're right, the mod itself is not a retail game. But the makers of the retail game were not served with a cease and desist order.

Someone was making a mod to that retail game and their content was solely based on elements of the Halo universe. All of that is copyrighted material. The Covenant, UNSC, Warthogs, Wraiths, Elites, Grunts, characters, weapons, vehicles.

If permission to use that property was not obtained either prior to the start or during the work itself.... well then, those folks were (sadly) using creations that they did not have permission to use.

If I recall correctly, Bungie actually gave them the go-ahead.

And it's your connection that's slower than turtle sex.

In........................................................Out .

They had 3 years, 3 YEARS! To say anything about it. But nooooo, they had to choose now.

Yes it's been three years that HaloGen has been in-production but Microsoft noly just realized that this game could pose a ceartain thret to there market. Bungie may have said that it's okay for HaloGen to start production but remember Microsoft owns Bungie. So the have the fianl decision what gets the go ahead.

Oh, for the record most games, books and storys are written becuase the author(s) read an inspiring story, or watched and inspiring moive that made then come to terms and write and new story/script. Sure Bungie got the idea for Halo for the book Ringworld. But chances are that the author got the idea from someone else to. It's 50% inspiration, 25% imagination and 25% knowlage to creat a great new book. I'm sure Bunige used thoughs three elements while writing the first story line for Halo.

Well, my view on it is that its just a mod for a PC game. The world is not going to end because it got cancelled.

When modding, you have to be very careful of legal issues. In my eyes, this is almost the same thing as ripping content and weapons from Halo 2 and sticking them in Halo Custom Edition.

And again, its to bad it got cancelled, and it did look pretty cool.
