This doesn't explain why Project Torlan and Battlefield Halo were allowed to proceed.
You know what? I didn't even know about these. You're right, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
So, there's still the theory that MS shut down Halogen because they're developing a RTS of their own...but I have another possible idea. I read a story a little while back about MS recently clamping down on it's IP on the web -- hunting down websites that misuse MS owned properties. MS is a big, big corporation and Legal is probably very insulated from Bungie. Someone at Legal may have been overzealous and saw Halogen and sent a cease and desist letter. After all, it's not like they actually filed an injunction or anything, they just sent a letter, costing MS maybe fifty cents, and that was enough to end the project.
Which brings me to my next idea. If the fan community really wants to save Halogen, emails and online petitions are easy to ignore, but letters aren't. If we started a letter-writing campaign asking Bungie to let the fan project continue as long as the Halogen team never sold their mod, they might cave to pressure. A letter costs maybe $.50 when you factor in envelope, paper, and stamp costs (unless postage has been raised again...urgh). If we tried, we could probably easily get 1000 or more letters written to Bungie in support of Halogen. Anyone game?
