thanks...how much is UT 2004?

It's a couple years old, so you should be able to find it for under 20 bucks. Try to get the editors choice DVD edition; it contains all the editing tools and some tutorial on an extra DVD so you can make your own maps and weapons and stuff.

This doesn't explain why Project Torlan and Battlefield Halo were allowed to proceed.

You know what? I didn't even know about these. You're right, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

So, there's still the theory that MS shut down Halogen because they're developing a RTS of their own...but I have another possible idea. I read a story a little while back about MS recently clamping down on it's IP on the web -- hunting down websites that misuse MS owned properties. MS is a big, big corporation and Legal is probably very insulated from Bungie. Someone at Legal may have been overzealous and saw Halogen and sent a cease and desist letter. After all, it's not like they actually filed an injunction or anything, they just sent a letter, costing MS maybe fifty cents, and that was enough to end the project.

Which brings me to my next idea. If the fan community really wants to save Halogen, emails and online petitions are easy to ignore, but letters aren't. If we started a letter-writing campaign asking Bungie to let the fan project continue as long as the Halogen team never sold their mod, they might cave to pressure. A letter costs maybe $.50 when you factor in envelope, paper, and stamp costs (unless postage has been raised again...urgh). If we tried, we could probably easily get 1000 or more letters written to Bungie in support of Halogen. Anyone game?

Wow, a bit off the subject? Anyway, i think the whole issue burns like burnsauce IF bungie wants to lock the topic and not discuss their opinions, let them, it just makes the company less and less appealing. Ah well, that's why you keep stuff private. Also, Everyone shouldn't depend on Halo 2 to revive the halo PC, it won't happen. Some people might love it, but trust me, as it was on the xbox, Halo 2 will be quite dissappointing is you expect too much. Good luck. ;)

*sighs* It is not Bungie's fault, blame Microsoft. Don't believe me? Ask Frankie. That's the weekly *cough* update *cough* guy. Usually.

Very good on posting this. I also posted this over on HIH.

Very sad. I waited forever for that mod to be released.

Nobody should be blaming anybody. The only people at fault I could see here is the HaloGen team, for not asking for permission from Microsoft at first.

You know, somebody should point out to Microsoft how intrumental Counterstrike, which started out as a third party mod, has been to the success of Valve and Half Life.

Recon, you kind of missed the point. Contrast what encouraging mods has done for UT and Half Life among others.

I wonder if Halogen got a cautionary cease notice and simply ignored it? If I remember correctly I think Project Torlan got one, then Anuban asked for permission and got a go ahead. This is years and years ago so I may have the timeline wrong.

If Halogen got a caution and ignored it, it's their own damn fault.

Edit: Microsoft allowing UT and Battlefield Halo to go ahead but shutting down Halogen makes me wonder if there is more to this tale than is being made public. It kind of seems odd.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time. I know who you are. You are destiny.

heres the only picture I could find...its not the one I was looking for but its still THE RINGWORLD

a crappy picture but one nonetheless

see...i wonder where they got Forerunners from...

"ringworlds Engineers"?

HALO is my FAVORITE GAME BY FAR!!!!!!!!!!!
but its NOT an original idea
its just a bunch of ideas put together
sorry bungie
PERFECT GAMES THOUGH!!!!!!!

You must ask yourself where did Larrry niven got his idea from? (hint a guy named dyson)
The use of ideas is generally allright vs the use of things already created. Had the one group made things that did not have the exact same name or exact same details or had stated any connection to the haloverse then it would have been their own IP, .

ALso the ancients idea hearkens waaaayy back before star trek or Arthur C Clarke. so that isn't a new one that was copied from Larry niven... that is found in many, many places in Sci-fi.

the difference between those and this is that those mods (halflife and etc) were created for a retail game that was owned by the group that the mods were being made for.. not so with C&C generals- it does not belong to MS... also another factor often overlooked so far is that games like unreal, quake, halflife, Myth, and Marathon were made or have since been opened to the point to where they are geared towards modders.. not very much so with Halo yet... except for Halo CE on the PC.

Great Job with writing that up Recon. It's confusing how some people keep insisting that the mod was perfectly fine and dandy since other people made mods about halo. However, the thing these people keep missing is that those mods got permission from bungie/ms for doing that mod, but halogen did not.

If halogen went to bungie/ms and asked them permission to contiue, they may let them. I am no employee though, so I cannot say that they will/wont let them past a reasonble doubt.

If I created a mod for halo that used charecters from Starcraft without gaining permission from Blizzard, they could very well shut down my mod because I did not gain that permission.

Remember, it is all about a person/company protecting their Ideas and Property. Your sock is your sock, even if I have your sock in my hand.

What, wait, Halogen DIDN'T ask for permission first? That's so mind boggling stupid the notion didn't occurr to me.

Well, they more or less kind of deserved to lose those three years of their lives. I don't try to get in a girl's pants until at least after dinner!

Maybe if they asked Bungie, I don't think Microsoft has any say on Bungie's copyrights....

Bungie's IP=Microsoft's IP anyway with ensemble rumoured to be working on a Halo RTS I'm not surprised this happened
