a valid point.

The main stated goal of the console version of MatchMaking was not about rank or any of the ego-related things that it has turned into.

The original purpose of MatchMaking was to gather together random strangers who didn't want to play friends of varying skills, but rather to play with (and against) people who all were of similar caliber. Those nail-biting games where the difference between winning and losing is how hard someone played or some minor twist in how things turned out.

Bungie stated that while they enjoyed playing with friends, they discovered that if there were significant differences in skill levels, after a while it became less-enjoyable for those who were dominating and those who were being dominated.

The idea of MatchMaking was to have enough people online, with enough historical game data that it would be possible to arrange matches that would be a challenge.

Unfortunately, I believe that Bungie gave far to much credit to some members of the gaming community. Bungie themselves were not concerned with the concept of rank itself, only how it related to the system being able to match people together. I think that they expected the players of Halo 2 to have similar desires, motivation and reasons for playing.

Unfortunately, many gamers feel that their time spent online is not as a member of a community, but solely for themselves. The rest of the online players might as well be "bots" who are there so "I can have fun".

The flaw in MatchMaking (IMO) was in Bungie not considering that aspect of human nature combined with the huge number of such egocentric tools that exist in the world.

Are PC gamers made of "better stuff"? I don't know for certain. But the potential for a new and incredible experience is the same. Unfortunately, so are the risks.
Don't get me wrong, Recon. I do actually like the Matchmaking system to an extent. I was able to get into some intense challenging matches as my rank increased, but sometimes I'm just not in the mood for that kind of gameplay. Sometimes I just want to get into a game of a specific gametype that I feel like playing with some random players that may or may not be better, the same, or worse than me at playing the game. It's not that I just want to be able to "own noobs" all day either, as part of the risk of joining servers from a list is that your own team may be a bunch of inexperienced players, making it still a challenge for you.

I think maybe it would be cool for future first person shooters to have a combination of allowing players the option to choose whether they want to join hosted servers or do arranged matches through a matchmaking system. Just eliminate the unranked matchmaking games altogether, and instead substitute those for allowing people to host servers of their own specific gametypes and options. This way, people can play exactly what they're in the mood for whenever they don't feel like working on their rank, and those who are looking for the challenge and chance to ascend the ranks may do so as well.

Just throwing out ideas. :)

I wonder if the Wolf thinks the Moon listens when he howls at it.

i really think it should NOT be done because it would be easier to hack and mess up because of it being on a pc with a keyboard and such and all those hackers out there that make or use apps to hack.

....I just wanted something like ranks for the heck of it and provide very challenging matches.....bad idea apperently :'-(.

i think ranks for halo pc would be cool, but bungie would have to have very strict rules and that stuff so people don't cheat. otherwise it would be a waste of time.

Definitely should not be done. Rankings are for tourneys not the main game. This would only encourage cheating and more smack talking. Like we need any more of that!

How about optional rankings? You're only ranked if you wanna be.
Or medals? Or rankings for individual gametypes/maps/weapon sets?
