I for one am thankful that Microsoft shut down this project. We didn't need some poor imitation of halo from Halogen anyway. Microsoft did the right thing in waiting so long to tell them as well. All that wasted work. Serves them right. Maybe next time they'll think twice before comencing work on such a foolhardy project. Good riddance.

Wow, what a nice guy you are. Do you have any idea what goes into a game? How much work is involved? They were making this as Halo fans, just like you. They spent 3 years on this, that is more than half of the time you will spend in highschool or college. And all you have to say is, "Serves them right".

They were just trying to expand on a universe they loved, who can blame them for that?

A: How do you know it was a poor imitation? You've never played the beta, or the final version, or any other version for that matter. The only thing you could possibly base it on are screenshots, and if you haven't seen those, your stereotyping of fan projects.

B: Foolhardy eh? More than half of bungie fans actually wanted a Halo RTS, and this looked like a good mod for C&C. I'm almost getting the impression that your opinion is based on the fact of hating Slipstream Productions, stereotyping them as a bad fan-project, or you just don't apprciate fan productions.

C: This would not have been a poor imitation, seeing as how bungie is not happy with this either. It looks just as good as any other RTS, and I'm sure a tonne of people would have played it. Agreed, they should have asked Microsoft first, but Mircrosoft should not have just shut it down. Perhaps a warning of some sort. But not shutting it down... How would you like it if you were working on a project for a couple of years, and someone came and tore the crap out of it? I wouldn't be happy.

I agree. Microsoft has done the honorable thing and saved the world from this cheap imitation that would have been. I think this will set a fine example to all who oppose Bill Gates and Microsoft. The best part about it is that Bungie can do nothing but sit by and watch. Microsoft has shown the Bungie community who is really pulling the strings behind the scenes. It is a great day in the history of Microsoft and Halo.

Except he's dead.... Oh well. I don't see why you guys think it is a "Cheap" imitation.

Edit: This is just an observation, but is it just ironic that the people making the "Serves you right halogen" and the "All bungie can do is sit and watch", and the "stupid cheap imitation" statements are all new to the bungie.net community. Why, now that I look at your profiles, it seems you spent no time on making them. You didn't list anything, not even that you play halo or halo 2....

Umm... ok. With any "project", the changes of them getting shut down after not asking the permission to use copyrighted objects or ideas are very high. I never said that I agree or disagree with it, but that would be a pretty obvious reason as to why. You can't tell me they started doing this, knowing every law and breaking it intentionally (whether they did or not), and then be shocked when it's shut down by the people that actually OWN the things they are messing with.

I don't care if there was somebody out there that made an invention, specifically patented every little thing about it, and someone else illegally copied it and was using it for "good causes". The guy or company has every right to control their property to their own discretion, so I don't know why everyone is so shocked that something along these lines is shut down, regardless of what they are doing or using it for.

Also, spare me of the rebuttals, as I've offered no opinion.

I think it is more of the method that it was done in that angers us. If microsoft cared so much about these patented ideas, they would have shut halogen down within a year of it going public. But now that Halo 3 is making its debut, they are shutting EVERYTHING down that is making anything related to halo. Halogen and BattleField Halo have both been shut down by Microsoft.

They new the risks, but they spent 3 years working on it, when Microsoft could have pulled the plug a long time ago and saved them the trouble. Its like they climbed up the stairs to heaven, and right when they are about to reach the top the Devil snags the gold carpet on the staircase out from under thier feet, and they fall all the way back to Hell. It was just a dirty move.

I would be blacklisted for telling the truth? For giving my opinion? I've said it once and I'll say it again - Halogen got what they deserved. If there's anyone who should be blacklisted on these forums, it's anyone associated with Halogen - they're nothing but petty criminals trying to profit off of Microsoft's business.

Arent you the all powerful one... You being extremely biased man. Try to look at something from both sides of the equation. And you cant profit off of a non-profit game.

I know there are examples against this, but there are examples for it as well. Valve, for example. They released thier game into the public to be modified, just as Bungie did with Halo Custom Edition. It isnt against the law to modify a game and use things from another game. It is only against the law to sell that material under your own name and to make a profit for yourself.

They worked hard on that game, and were only trying to make a game they loved better, so they are criminals for it? I dont understand your reasoning one bit Mr. Everlasting Know-it-all.

And the sheer concept behind this, they let them work publically for 3 years, then shut them down...

Q-Why did they let them work on it for three years?

A-M$ is a Heartless Conglomerate Giant that likes to stomp on the souls of little people. They bait you along and then *Blam* Shut down.

I can’t for the day Bungie does the big Coup D'état listed on the 7 steps.

But they own most of it. Anyhow, you are being extremely bias. I'm getting the impression you have a grudge against them. It's not being criminals. unless you are calling everyone that has made a fan-project criminal. And its not like they're gonna sell it. Good lord, get your facts straight.

I'm not biased, I'm just telling it like it is. Microsoft had their reasons for shutting the project down, and I support them no matter what the reasons. It's a good thing that Microsoft has asserted themselves on this occasion - it reminds everyone who's really in charge of Bungie and Halo. I can only hope they take Halogen to court and sew them over this matter, it would really show them what criminals who plagarize others' work deserve. But in the end Halogen = pwned and the world is a better off place because of it.

Wow, what an ass you are.

If every member of the HaloGen team was hired tomorrow by Microsoft, and put to work making their "mod" into an actual game, would you still be this much of a sniveling suckup? Would that exact same content you're calling a plagiariziation suddenly become this fantastic art and magically the world "would be a better place" because of this fantastic new title Microsoft was bringing to you?

Please, shut up. I've heard about as much of your fanboi rhetoric as I can stand.

It sucks hardcore that things had to happen this way. The Halogen group are a talented team, and it's a shame to see their work come to an abrupt end like this. Nobody in their right minds could look at their hard work and dedication and not feel that they had something awesome on their hands.

Having said that, they took a risk when they chose to continue working on their project. There's no statute of limitations on when an intellectual property can be protected, and the assumption that "if they haven't stopped us now, they won't stop us later" is a dangerous one to make. As much as you'd like to theorize that Microsoft spent the last three years giggling amongst each other and watching the mod, simply waiting for the mod's release to jump upon it and tear out its jugular, the fact of the matter is that Microsoft is a much larger company than just being a publisher of copies of Halo, and matters like this are not handled instantly. Particularly when it's something that starts small, such as Halogen. It's also important to remember that Halo was a much different thing to the people that own it three years ago than it is today, so it makes sense that they would more fervently protect their copyright. Try as you might, you cannot slight someone for protecting their best interest, even if they're a "megaconglomerate corporation."

It has been said before, but it is likely that the Halogen team could always put their unique work into an equally unique title, eschewing the Halo-related work and any ties to someone else's intellectual property to create something wholly their own. I believe they would then be able to release their work. Further, in general I think it's far more impressive to go the fully creative route and make something that isn't based on someone else's previous work. Simply put, I think it is possible for them to release their work. Just not as long as they shackle it to Halo.

How do you "Sew" someone in court? I don't understand how that's possible. Unless you mean" "sue". But obviously, you don't understand the legal issues involved in court. Microsoft would probably burn more money sueing Halogen then they would actually get out of the money from halogen. Plus, I'm pretty sure you can't sue over IP when it is non-profit. You are really getting on my nerves....

Agreed. This probably open the eyes of the fan community, along with myself, to be a bit more cautious when using IP. I still do feel bad about slipstream productions having this project shut down so late into the making of the game.

Master Chief w/o his Helmet!

Stosh <3's me vicariously... at least someone does...

The way I see it, when things get this good or this big, Bungie should take them in.

Halo PC Custom Edition would probably end up the same way if it weren't supported by Bungie. I know it's different because it's free, but look at this incident. Some guy created 3 good maps like 2 years ago. An ass, after he figured everyone had forgotten about them, took the maps, and sold them as a $20 bundle to people who didn't know any better. I figure this could cause problems if it becomes a trend, because there are some maps that Microsoft nor bungie would want their names stamped on. I.E. -blam!- Hideaway or Playboy Gulch.
