I'm not biased, I'm just telling it like it is. Microsoft had their reasons for shutting the project down, and I support them no matter what the reasons. It's a good thing that Microsoft has asserted themselves on this occasion - it reminds everyone who's really in charge of Bungie and Halo. I can only hope they take Halogen to court and sew them over this matter, it would really show them what criminals who plagarize others' work deserve. But in the end Halogen = pwned and the world is a better off place because of it.

I think you mean 'sue', not sew. But I agree with you totally, that would set a hard example for those who would dare defy Microsoft and try to take credit for others' hard work. The day this news came of the project getting shut down was a very happy day for me indeed. This makes me appreciate Microsoft even more.

So you are saying they didnt do any work at all? Modelling the vehicles and characters, scripting the actions, modeling the buildings, programing the AI (VERY hard). They worked extremely hard, and if you arent being biased by not seeing that, then i dont know what biased is.

You are being the biggest fanboy on the planet to not realise what M$ just did. They practically stole 3 years of thier lives from them. How can you be happy about that?

I dont think he is a MS fanboy, just a XB360 and Bungie fanboy. He will support it to the end despite morals or facts. These are the kinds of people i hate, they cant see anything but what they want to see.

Yes, a basic fan would be, but not a fanboy. They want everything to come from bungie, and if it isnt made by bungie, it is blasphemy.

So... you're happy because someone made a game that you probably never heard of until the news came that it was shut down. I'm sure you didn't go to their website every day, waiting for a "Microsoft has shut us down :(" notice.
How about this:
Would you support Microsoft if they used child labor, no matter what the reasons?

Microsoft would be right to use child labor if it would be effective and save them money, and I would support their decision to do so. In this case, Microsoft made the right decision to shut down this project, and anyone who disagrees is against Microsoft and Bungie.

Yes. Anyone who disagrees with this decision stands against Microsoft and Bungie. In short, if you disagree with this decision, then you are not a true Bungie fan. You are not a Bungie fan at all.

Dear god, thats insane! Child labor? *shudders* that's really a shame...

Anyway, Halogen was pretty cool, and i know i was going to download it, that would have been awesome. It's sad they won't be able to finish it.

Trailer Park Boys ~ One of the best Canadian made comedies ever.

I hate Microsoft for what they did to Halogen. They worked so hard on it, and for it all to be scrapped.

Bungie why don't you just seperate from Microsoft? Your big enough, and popular now, you'll be fine.

Considering Bungie is legally owned by Microsoft I can't see them rebelling against their parent company.

The Halogen shutdown is an enormous dissapointment and only reflects how detached Microsoft is from Bungie's fan community. I'm not suprised, and I'm not happy.

On a different note, I'd like to respond to Recon's personal speculation. First off, I wouldn't call that speculation, I'd call that fact. People take advantage of their anonymity way too much, and this site suffers from it. At least the Septagon's still standing.

I wonder what many people's reactions would have been like if Bungie was still autonomous and owned full control to the Halo IP, and did the same thing. ? Would they really be willing to such fan involvment? I suppose if they were still small they could perhaps license it out to further the name, but I doubt they would even do that. Halo is their baby. Not to say that these guys at Slipstream aren't good and all, but Bungie has always been such a secretive bunch when it comes to their games.

But I can't help but remember how in a weekly update a few weeks ago how it was stated that Frankie did a public convention on the importance of community involvment in video games. Such a contradiction. Best of luck to the former developers.

Microsoft may own it, but doesn't Bungie still exert the most creative control over the Halo canon? I am just curious: Legally, how does Bungie fit into the control of Halo. How do they keep things Bungied when working in the series with Microsoft. So to speak,"Keep them at bay." Maybe this is answered simply with the story bible in full completion.

I agree. I think Bungie would have done the same thing, they're overprotective with all of their games, they won't even tell us where the easter eggs are in all of them. Bungie would have shut down this project as well if they had the power to, and they would've come up with an excuse to give to the community. Face it, Halogen should've have been making this project in the first place, when they do something like that they oppose Bill Gates and Microsoft. They were foolish to attempt it in the first place, and I don't feel sorry for them for having to stop working on it and having wasted three years of their lives.

Well, I'm not that adament about it. I don't think they wasted three years of their lives and that they strictly oppose Microsoft and Bungie. I believe they were just trying to add their own type of contribution to the Bungie community as a whole. I do feel kinda bad for 'em though. Three years of work towards what could have been a cool rendition for another game.

Couldn't it have been possible that the other game(company) that it was actually being made for could have also interceded and stopped it as well. For example, if someone were to try to develop a mod for Halo 2 that was, say like Battlefield 2 or something, and they were very public about its development. Perhaps it would be the the developers of Battlefield 2 that would intercede first. I would think you would have to realize from the start that either company could possibly shut it down.

I believe Halogen knew this from the start and that is why they have handled it so well.

I also thought that Bill Gates had retired from Microsoft. Hmm...

HALL OF FAME
Muno, Jonny, Christobel, Petey, Caboose, Caboose's sister

I don't think it was a good thing. Why did Microsoft has to step in there and just dominate it. It was looking pretty cool.

  • 09.19.2006 1:59 PM PDT

This is why:
At the end of the day, Microsoft owns Halo and they are operating a business that involves a billion dollar franchise that has gotten bigger and broader than ever, especially in light of high profile movie deals and growing licensed products. As the holder of the IP, they have to maintain control over all aspects of the franchise and protect their interests and interests of their partners. If any of us were in the same situation, wouldn't we also seek to protect our creative and monetary investments? You don't have to agree, all I ask is that for a minute we all remove ourselves from the emotional side and just agree that while it sucks, it's completely understandable.

Try not to think of Microsoft as some evil huge conglomerate corporation who loves to stomp on the little guy all the time(although that is open to interpretation and opinion). As the saying goes, "It's nothing personal, just business."

He does have a point though, putting in all of that hard work and doing it all for nothing will make Halogen and anyone else who want to mess with Microsoft think twice about doing something as reckless as making a mod of a hugely popular game such as Halo. I think this incident will set a fine example for other groups and programmers that will want to mess with Microsoft.

In no way did bungie discourage fan expansion on the halo universe. They encouraged it in fact. Franky said they do, and Halo CE for PC proves they do. They have a mod community, so why was HaloGen so different?

I dont think bungie would shut down an RTS based off of the Halo CE game. If it was a Halo 3 or 2 based game, they would be all over it becuase it could hinder the Halo 2 vista and Halo 3 sales, although it could have equally promoted it.

All halogen really would have done is spread the Halo name farther, and get those who havent played it intersted in the actual game.
